Run the Jewels
you can all run naked backwards through a field of dicks
General Info
Run the Jewels are a hip-hop duo consisting of NYC producer and rapper El-P and Atlanta rapper Killer Mike. Their music is aggressive, often juvenile, and contains anti-establishment lyrics. Where El-P raps about his dick, Killer Mike will rap about smoking weed or the private prison system. Both are fairly politically engaged (especially Mikey). Bernie Sanders even introduced them at their Coachella set in 2016. Run the Jewels are also very meme-able and have a good sense of humor about themselves. Their wholesome friendship is the backbone of many of lines and online jokes (Me and Mike, we just think alike, we can't stop high-fiving). In 2015, they released Meow the Jewels, which was a remix of RTJ2 made entirely out of cat noises. The profits of this went to cat shelters. At their Lolla set a few years ago, they brought a guy up to rap Legend Has It with them and he nailed it..
Members: El-P & Killer Mike
Sounds Like Genre: hip-hop/rap Similar Artists: Vince Staples, Danny Brown, Rage Against the Machine, MF DOOM, JPEGMAFIA Similar Bonnaroo Artists: Denzel Curry
Suggested Listening Run the Jewels 2, especially the first 6 tracks! RTJ3 is a close second for me
Physical Reaction/Live Show RTJ always bring the energy live. The crowd is always engaged, both rappers rap a large majority of their lyrics and the setlists are well-crafted. The stage design for the first two tours were fairly boring (just a DJ stand), but for the RTJ3 tours, they added two large balloons symbolizing their "fist and gun" logo and added a large backdrop. Right now, they perform 8 songs from RTJ3, and 3 each from the other two. However, by the time Bonnaroo comes around, RTJ4 will be out. They'll be opening for Rage Against the Machine on about 40 dates this year so their setlist might cater more to their political songs but expect it to be very RTJ4 heavy. Their ideal timeslot to me would be late-night Which but the Friday at Roo is very stacked with sub-HLs so it's uncertain where they'll land. RTJ > Tool is ideal as well but their set seems better suited for the Which. If you haven't seen them yet, DO IT!

Hmm Im actually a pretty big fan of the newest one. Both songs kinda hold true to El P saying they are just gonna drop a nasty grab your nuts type album.
Would cry if we got a surprise album release on Friday.
I enjoyed Yankee but Ooh La La needs to cut its chorus in half. It's not interesting enough to be that long and it takes me out of the song.
Like a lot of what they do, it's clearly meant to be a live sing along. I kind of agree with the criticism of the chorus, but I don't think it's a bad song. I liked the Yankee song a little better.

interesting Ive never thought of their songs as intentional live sing alongs.
Not every song of course, but there are a couple on each album that are clearly done for audience participation even if like Bonnaroo 2015, El-P had everyone chanting "with my dick in your mouth all day" and called us all out. Haha. They're always so entertaining though. I'm fucking dying over that premier show we'da got all that live this past weekend. :/ So many shows missed, and with April trashed, I'm going to end up missing 40-45 sets of shit, much of which I wanted to see and knew would be high on the year's list. Now it's like I'm working on Favorite Shows You Might Have Seen in 2020. Then there's May and June.

True - Kinda in the roots of the genre I suppose. This new song though is just a classic hip hop sample in 90s boom bap fashion
Yeah, the roots included call and response (typical of a lot of early rap genres here), hey-ho'ing, hey hey hey'ing and fists and shit. Haha. If you think of RTJ, they always throw you some of that. Beginning of RTJ1, "Hey Hey Hey" "Hey Hey Hey".. Oh dear what the fuck have we here... or like I posted before the line from Panther Like a Panther, or "Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey Hey" (do dope fuck hope). It's scattered around and brought out in different ways, but they clearly write (including) with the intention of inciting the audience.
To me it sounds like El-p went back to his original production style from the 90s when he was in Company Flow. Which is awesome!!! I wouldn’t mind a couple of hard ass simplistic throw back tracks like this.
For anyone who’s interested El-p’s first solo album “Fantastic Damage” is now streaming on all major sites for the first time ever. Came out in 2002. Cracked my head open then and still relevant today.

Been thinking about this recently: If RTJ 4 is fire, EL P has a sneaky case for most great albums produced.
Cold Vein Funcrusher Plus Fanrastic Damage I’ll Sleep When Your Dead RAP Music RTJ1 2 3 4

Really one of the best artists ever in hiphop.
Could not agree more! But don’t forget Cancer 4 Cure. That totally rhymed unintentionally. Haha!!!

El P shared an IG video of him listening to the closing track off of speakers. Not great quality but you can tell its a great song. 3/3 so far and my expectations are just through the roof at this point. Can't wait for Friday.
