Some good news—-an Israeli study seems to show the Pfizer vaccine makes transmission to others much less likely than the non vaccinated. Protection from infection and slowing the spread is worth doing the vax but if it makes you so you can’t spread it to others easily—I want to believe.
After sprinting ahead in the race to inoculate its population against the coronavirus, Israel has struck a deal with Pfizer, promising to share vast troves of medical data with the international drug giant in exchange for the continued flow of its hard-to-get vaccine.
Proponents say the deal could allow Israel to become the first country to vaccinate most of its population, while providing valuable research that could help the rest of the world. But critics say the deal raises major ethical concerns, including possible privacy violations and a deepening of the global divide that enables wealthy countries to stockpile vaccines as poorer populations, including Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza, have to wait longer to be inoculated.
Israeli media have reported that Israel paid at least 50% more than other countries.

Was the lizard blood in the Pfizer or Moderna? I got my first shot of Moderna today and am wondering if I will wake up scaly tomorrow morning.
I don't know how the second shot supply will go, but the rich part of Virginia's vaccine administration to teachers went super well this weekend and they are offering more first shots this week. I know our governor spent a good amount of money on the vaccine roll out. Hope administration is going well throughout the state.

I was able to sign up today in Virginia, not expecting to get the shot for another month or so, but it's pretty exciting. It seems to be going well in our state.

That's great to hear! My dad just became eligible as he's 65+ and I'm trying to check with him to see if he's scheduled an appointment.
Still unclear to me whether the vaccines grant sterilizing immunity, ie prevent transmission/contagion in vaccinated people. Gonna make a massive difference in its ability to bring numbers down quickly and allow vaccinated people to safely visit unvaccinated people without running the risk of transferring the virus to them. Early numbers seem to indicate that it does or will to some extent, but how much is still not known.
All I can say is, mask usage is probably still going to be a good move among the vaccinated population, because we still may be carrying it and spreading it to others, until everyone has had at least the opportunity to get vaccinated.
Oddly, I am experiencing symptoms again that are like a flashback to what happened to me when I had COVID back in June: I have a fever and trouble keeping food down. Kind of weird but it’s nowhere near as bad as it was the first time so I should be good.

it was pretty easy to sign up online, at least for Fairfax county and Arlington County

If it doesnt prevent transmission, it's called natural selection.

agreed. and even if we find out tomorrow with absolute assurance that the vaccine halts transmission, i'd still wear a mask when i'm vaccinated just for courtesy's sake. i can't imagine trying to explain to costco employees "hey it's all good i'm vaccinated and here is my paperwork and here is a study that says the vaccine eliminates transmission so i can go without a mask". these people have dealt with sooooo much bullshit over the past year it's worth the incredibly minor inconvenience of wearing a mask to not add to that pile. not to mention other shoppers.

That's normal. Just a sign that it's working. Should go away in 24 hours. Hang in there.

Yeah I wear it when I'm in the drive thru or getting delivery, partly to signal that I'm gonna do it for them if they are required to do it for me.
It seems like it never quite got through to people that wearing the mask was as much or more about the wearer not transmitting than protecting themselves.

Oh, I think it got through plenty. It's just that, for a lot of Americans, protecting other people isn't enough of a motivation to do anything, even something as simple as wearing a piece of cloth on your face.

That's part of it, too, but I think a lot of people genuinely don't understand how masks work. I'm not trying to defend their ignorance, but I think there is a lot of ignorance. Like, if you see someone wearing the mask and the face shield or whatever version of probably overdoing it, I'm guessing they're doing that for their own benefit, not others'.
How common is the taste/smell thing? I have some cold/flu symptoms (sore throat, achey, tired, chills). I’d be pretty surprised if I got it given how I am “out” for so little and any time I am it’s outside and masked. Still have taste and smell so if I can save time from not getting a test and just being as secluded as I usually stay I’d prefer it

FWIW, I never lost taste or smell, and I was otherwise fairly sick for several weeks. It's purely anecdotal, and I have no idea how common my symptom set is/was, but just saying, it's possible.

Got an appointment for my mom to get the vaccine tomorrow! So happy I didnt have to worry about pages crashing or virtual queues.
Aren’t you in LA? That’s impressive if so cuz I’ve heard their rollout has been kind of a mess.
Yep, the rollout has been ass but I saw the county health department send out the info that it was open to 65+ like 20 mins after and it seemed there was a lot of confusion around what the site was showing. I went to book an appointment and just had to find a location which was reasonably close and that had slots open and boom. And now theyre making more announcements about whats what and the website is erroring out horribly. It hadnt even hit the local news yet when I booked the appointment so a lot of people were either behind or unaware. It pays to keep checking for updates. So now pending any bullshit tomorrow both my parents will have been vaccinated this month. Huge relief.

Got a call for the J+J vaccine trial. So I guess that one isn't around the corner yet. I think at this point I'm just going to wait. The weird thing about it is they are doing two shots 2 months apart. I thought it was one shot, I guess they are trying something new.

I read somewhere that it is between 60-70% which seemed really high to me, but I actually know a bunch of people that the only reason they knew they had it was because they lost taste/smell.
Edit to say: I am down with masks for the next year. I don't see work coming yet and I need the hustle. Besides I feel like a superhero in mine. Where Y'at Magazine shouted out my shop on insta today though, which is fucking huge. *bragging moment*
its not like we're just going to throw them away. so many cloth ones, will probably have extra disposables once it's all over. things like festivals and "flu" season feel like I'll be masked up majority of the time w no problem.
bandana to fight the bonna-flu/dust are pretty cumbersome, way more than the simple cloth mask.
and I mean plenty of club shows when it's cold where clearly someone next to me is sick.
would've loved for a nice warm cloth mask during day for night.
*flights, I'll probably always wear a mask on a flight from now on just because nice always been sus of the circulation and people are always sick

The J&J trial that’s reporting soon is for the one-dose regimen, but they recently launched another trial for a two-dose protocol.

Ah ok that makes sense. This trial actually sounds interesting though. My worry would be I do this trial, they discover it doesn't really work, then am I able to get a different vaccine? Probably not.

I think you would. They’re still recommending those of us who’ve had it and recovered (and therefore already have an immune response) still get vaccinated. I can’t imagine it’d be different with a vaccine-triggered response, especially if it didn’t prove neutralizing for some reason.
I think the more likely result, though, is that the J&J vaccine will prove at least moderately effective, given the preliminary numbers on immunogenicity from the single-dose trial.
