Absolutely mind-boggling but yet not surprising that The Trump administration didn't pre-purchase enough vaccine to achieve herd immunity. Yay for having a competent federal government again.

Well...it's been almost 48 hours since my second Pfizer dose. I've experienced fewer side effects than the first shot (which were minimal for me to begin with). My arm is noticeably less sore than after the first shot; I have had a headache, but that's pretty normal for me these days anyway, so who's to say that has anything to do with the vaccine? No tail to be found.

Waiting out what is hopefully last day of a seven day post exposure quarantine. One where I let 7 people in the world get within six feet of me without a mask, and one of them tested positive. Took my pcr test yesterday. Only unfortunate part is that I've been in just my bedroom to protect the other people in my house who were not exposed. That has been not fun, but everyone else has been great with taking over my responsibilities and such.
Trust no one, always mask up and stay the fuck away from other people.
Thisssss. My parents are the only people I see unmasked outside of the two humans and two cats in my own home. And only because they watch my kiddo and are somehow more anxious than I am lol.
is there a definitive answer to how long after having covid you need to wait to be vaccinated? my parents qualify to get their first shot, but mom had covid recently so i don't want to try and schedule it if it's still unsafe. we keep getting different answers ranging from 14-90 days.

90 days is what the health care community advises. But if your Dad did not have COVID go ahead and get him the shot.

Here's Pfizer's release about their in vitro tests of their vaccine vs. the UK and SA spike mutations. They don't go into numbers, but the upshot is the same as with Moderna: Slight reduction in neutralization vs. SA variant, but not enough to really affect effectiveness.

Don't let the people at StubHub catch wind of this.
i just bought the Platinum Package which includes a front of the line fast pass, vaccine of my choice, commemorative t-shirt, and a meet and greet with Anthony Fauci.
1) 89.3% efficacy in the UK trial. Efficacy by strain of 95.6% against the original COVID-19 type and 85.6% against the UK variant strain. 56 cases in the placebo arm and 6 in the vaccine arm, with only 1 severe case, which was in the placebo arm.
2) 60% efficacy in South Africa. 29 cases were observed in the placebo group and 15 in the vaccine group. One severe case occurred in the placebo group. Of the 44 infections, they sequenced 27 of them, and 25 of those 27 were of the South African variant. 6% of the vaccine cohort was HIV-positive, and it looks like there was a difference in efficacy based on HIV status.
3) Novavax is developing a variant-specific booster and/or a bivalent vaccine, and expects to go into clinical trials on it/them in Q2 2021.
So, good news (Strong efficacy against wild-type and UK variants, it's increasingly looking like just about every vaccine protects against severe disease) and not-great-but-not-disastrous news (Still-present-but-reduced efficacy vs. the SA variant in the first real-world vaccine trial results), there.
EDITED TO ADD: It looks like enrollment in the SA trial was fairly low - approx. 4,400 people. 44 infections is also a pretty low number, so it's too little to tell if it protects against severe disease from the SA variant, yet. I'd hazard that this points to the likelihood of us all having to get a third shot some time much later this year to boost against at least the SA variant (maybe with the 2021 flu shot?), but we'll see.

So WTF is going on with AstraZeneca? They really fell behind. Seems like we only ever hear bad news about them, but I think they are currently being given out in UK?
