i can think of few things more irritating than being almost overly cautious and avoiding covid for 2+ years only to end up getting up while attending funeral stuff for a loved one. husband tested positive on 2 home tests, we're waiting on his pcr results. i feel normal so i waited until this morning to test and mine is negative. scheduled a pcr for tomorrow because it seems insane that i wouldn't get it when we've had to be together 24 hours a day this week doing family stuff.
You're right to stay on top of it, but COVID can be weird that way. My wife's brother-in-law got it, recently, but neither her sister nor her two nieces got it, and they had all been in close contact right up until the positive test result.

Unfortunately everyone that I know in person that hasn't caught it, is now catching it. I only know two people that have managed not to and I am not sure how honestly. One gets tested regularly for work and the other only tests when she's been exposed. Plus, like jorgeandthekraken stated, this virus is weird. I know people that have slept in the same bed when one has been positive and still didn't catch it. They are talking about doing a study now that focuses on people that have somehow managed to avoid it all this time, but to find those that truly haven't had it is the difficult part (as per the article). They also talked with a women that worked as an ER nurse in the covid ward for all of 2020 and 2021. She talked about how she would pull down her mask and get close to patients to comfort them and tested negative even when testing daily.
Sorry that your hubby is positive but fingers crossed you remain negative.

Happens a lot & no one knows why. My brother had it but his girlfriend never did.

Signed up for a PCR tomorrow. Just got back from Yosemite where it was SNOWING every day, so outdoor dining wasn't an option. I have a sore throat, aches, runny nose etc... 2 negative rapid tests but those don't seem to be worth a hill of beans in some cases.

My kid got it and neither Cody or I did. It's so weird! And he was fully coughing directly into my face/mouth, sleeping next to me, etc etc for many days.

I was just talking about that. Rapid tests are not as reliable on these newer variants (as per our covid team). Also, after the mansion trip, I had a runny nose, sore throat, headache and asthma issues all week while testing on rapid at home tests and getting negative. It took until Friday (Monday was my first test) that my rapid tested positive. The PCR is definitely more reliable for some reason, IMO. Fingers crossed for you.

Thank you. I'm honestly kind of hoping I have it because I already feel like shit and this will just give me some time off work lol.

PCRs can detect the lowest traces of covid, whereas rapids can't. The way it was presented to me is that you think about mountains and hills (of course this really applies only to those who have been vaccinated). PCR is like a long sloping hill - it can detect it before and after you're symptomatic or contagious. Rapids will often ONLY pop up positive when you are fully contagious, though not always true.
The issue with PCRs is that "the government has run out of money" (cuz we need all of that for the military of course) so it's all state dependent as to where and how and when you can get PCR plus its results. NYC still has vans who can do a 24 hour PCR but you gotta find them in the wealthy neighborhoods (of course).

So the covid girl literally said, "rapid test will only come up positive after you are contagious and have infected everyone around you." So she was basically correct.

Yah! You work in TV so I know you get it. That's why it's "mask - test - mask - test result - take off mask". I've been doing a "test first" before meeting up with groups of people but we're literally doing it THE HOUR we are supposed to go / arrive. Not even same-day anymore.
What's also ironic AF is that NYC is on "high alert" and the health department says everyone should mask up inside, but no one is doing anything about protecting the people who work in bars or restaurants, and my best friend says there's no mask mandate about to happen at school. :-(

We don't even take off masks. It is mask-test-mask-test-mask-why the fuck can't you keep your fucking mask on? But yeah same here. Increase in cases, no mask mandate and it looks like there isn't one in the future. I really hate this fucking timeline. I personally don't think the mask mandate should have been dropped at all. It is the only way to ensure you are protecting those that need protecting.

I've had several "allergy/colds" in the past year or so and just took a rapid which was negative and moved on. I wonder if it was actually covid. All very mild.

I hear ya. This whole NYC thing with Adams saying "Oh we'll definitely bring a mandate back when we're on high". Well here we are, and yet there we aren't.
(And the mask-test-no mask I was referring to the people on camera - my bad!)
Yeah zone A has the highest positives. They have to test daily. I only test once a week, down from twice a week. The union just dropped covid sick day pay. I'm sure everything else is going soon too. It's a fight to get people to mask up.

I am very sad to welcome you to the "no sick pay" club.

A friend who I spent all day Friday with and went to a sold out show with that night just tested positive. I wore a mask most of the time in the venue, but not in the car ride or at the restaurant. Not a guarantee I got it, but looks like there’s a decent chance it’s finally caught up with me. I made the decision in February that I couldn’t keep living in fear of this for the sake of my mental health that was at a low, but it’s quite nerve wrecking to catch it when I live in a household with two unvaccinated (by choice, not medical condition) people and one immunocompromised person who is vaxxed (all of which encourage me to go out and live normally though). Not to mention the timing couldn’t be worse, as I fly for Primavera in 12 days (if I miss out on that trip it’s going to be quite the bummer and financial drain. Working hard for 3 years to afford my first international trip just to miss out with a virus I’ve been being incredibly careful to avoid for over 2 years would suck. Was going to buy my travel insurance today (before I knew about the Covid) but that becomes kinda unethical to buy the moment you know you’ve been exposed to something that could cancel your trip, no?)

Vieux is right - buy it NOW before you test positive. They have the money and very few people are actually doing the covid insurance thing anymore from what I can tell.
Hell, a friend of mine was just in Spain and tested positive after she got back to the country, and she was already starting to feel symptoms before she left. Makes me wonder how she managed to pull a negative test in order to get on the plane back to the states.
Also 12 days from now? Unless you're a long hauler, if you have it right now you'll be done with it by the time you fly out.

True on all accounts, I appreciate the advice. I guess my real worry with the trip is more my parents or brother (the people I mentioned I live with) coming down with an extremely serious case (which is likely for my dad/brother because they are obese and unvaxxed), which has potential to disrupt my plans too. Trying to avoid them in the house, but you can only do so much with shared bathrooms and ventilation. In a vacuum, it probably would actually be a really good time to get a case and get it over with, so I have less worry of catching it in Spain.
I love your empathy and your heart, but you said it yourself, at some point you have to stop living in fear just because they refuse to protect themselves.
I know it's gotta be rough in that situation. Big hugs and do what you need to protect yourself and still live your best life. You only get this one.

I’ve definitely come around to agree on this and just accept they’ve got a higher risk of bad outcomes and there’s nothing I can do about it. Just would be really shitty timing for it to actually happen. Appreciate the reassurances and advice.
Buy the insurance. You aren't going to miss your trip. If you get it now, you will be ok by then. Your relatives that won't get vax, I got nothing for. You did your best to keep them safe.
Followed up my October J&J booster today with a Moderna booster. Ready to be in the teeming masses of Bonnaroo. Of course nobody's going this year so the risk is lowered anyways. But still...

Yeah, I’m seeing my doctor next week for a physical before I lose/have to change insurance, and I’m going to ask her about a fourth shot. I know I’m a few years under 50 and protection vs. Omicron BAs 2-5 isn’t amazing, but I feel like every little bit helps going into a camping music festival. If I get the go-ahead, I’m going to get Moderna after getting Pfizer my first 3 rounds. I’ve read enough about there likely being benefit to mixing it up to give it a go.

I'm not even seeing a doc or anything - they're letting people in NYC just get whatever shot they want as long as they sign up (or even show up, depending). I've never heard of anyone being turned away or needing to show proof (my friend who had a stint with cancer 5+ years ago got it back in April). I'm trying to hold out as long as I can. Summer is always our busy season AND I want to visit my GF in her summer residency and do some national parks or something when she's done. Since it's basically 6 - 8 weeks of real effectiveness, I have to decide between being ready for High Season immediately, or being covered on the back end of summer for our trip.
Times like this I wish I'd gotten Omicron when everyone else did so I'd have those sexy antibodies. I only have the shot kind.
How long do Omnicron antibodies last? I had a mild case in February and I had my booster in October. I don't meet the CDC criteria for a second booster, but I'm wondering if I should get one anyway before I go to Primavera just to be safe.

You had Omicron in Feb 2022? You should be good til August. It's like having a booster, from what i understand.
