I bought a car last month, and every day since I get emails and phone calls from several of the dealerships we browsed at, asking if I want to come in for a test drive. I am astonished at the balls these salespeople have right now.
If they seem even more desperate AF than usual, it's because they're even more desperate AF than usual. Not defending them even a little, because I DETEST car dealerships, but the commissioned sales dudes are trying to stay off the dole when they should probably just accept it. Unemployment will pay for partial unemployment or reduced earnings here, and we have special rules for this mess, but I know that isn't the case everywhere. Congrats on buying at the right time - nobody wants to go through that right now, obviously.
And thanks, because that reminds me, my elderly mom's lease is just about up and I think I'm going to try to arrange something without her having to leave the house. Not looking forward to any of it, and her preferred car (four Mazda 3's in a row) is a new model she hasn't driven so I have to play surrogate test driver and do half of the sales person's job.
that's really fucking sad. Homelessness has always made me really sad, but seeing that is just heart wrenching. Nothing like a pandemic to really shine a light on all the US' problems.
Arizona's stay at home order goes into effect at 5PM today, but the list of essential businesses is a complete joke. Hair salons and golf courses are considered essential here and can still remain open.
John Oliver with another great take on this crisis.
Just watched this last night. His show has really been a kind of "hidden" gem. Perfectly focused with just the right pacing of comedic slants.
Watched the latest episode last night too.
John Oliver has always been my favorite of the comedic news shows; I just love his energy, humor, and sharp commentary—all blends together to be something really special.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

The list of essential businesses for our countywide stay at home order (went into effect Friday) was three pages long. Haven't checked the statewide order, but I've heard it's similar.
I thought the midwest was usually behind the rest of the country but my city has been on lockdown since March 17th (they did it so bars wouldn't be open on St. Pats). It's crazy there are cities still not on lockdown.

Hair Salons are odd but golf makes sense to me, as does something like tennis.

Wait, how is golf and tennis essential in your mind?

I agree they aren't essential but it should be easy to practice social distancing on tennis courts and golf courses. And they'll provide an outlet for exercise.
Although you could make an argument that many individuals won't practice social distancing so they should be closed.
So this is a report from the right wing that details a plan for reopening businesses. What is notable is that the recommendation here is no gatherings over 50 people until a vaccine has been produced. If that is the case, then we might be 1-2 years out from festivals and concerts starting back up again. Notable that this is even what the ring wingers are saying, have to think that this might actually be what the policy prescription ends up being.

they are activities that are both pretty safe and provide an outlet for mental stress of the situation.
I firmly believe no one should be interacting with each other outside for reasons of liesure. If someone gets sick who’s been out playing tennis, they can only blame themselves. There’s plenty of ways to be outside and be alone. All parks and recreation areas should be closed.down

Yes, the AEI is conservative, but this is the most well thought out coronavirus response framework. The main author is Scott Gottlieb, the former head of the FDA, who has consistently been one of the most authoritative and informed voices on the coronavirus. I would highly recommend following him on Twitter. twitter.com/ScottGottliebMD

I mean look I totally get where you are coming from here. If this was a 4-6 week situation I would agree with you. But the stay at home orders are probably going to go into July/August at the least, and in certain places even longer. Mental health is going to become a massive problem here, giving people something that resembles their life if it is likely safe that will help confront the mental (and physical) health side, I think thats important to keep as an option.

I got into a whole back and forth today with people on a local FB group about whether or not people should be allowed outside to sunbathe or just generally hang out in a park if they're just with their partner or alone and keeping a safe distance from other people. See video below... I said people should only be out for exercise, not leisure. They disagreed. The main argument being for people who don't have yards or a balcony or something where they can be outside, and being cooped up inside being bad for mental health. Which I get... but like.... idk.
I do think tennis is fine though bc it's easy to stay apart and it's good exercise. Golf is a bit iffy tho. I've never golfed, but it doesn't seem like it'd qualify as "exercise".

Yeah I mentioned that fact more so because that it will be taken more seriously by the republicans more so than if it was CAP. This has a pretty decent chance of actually being our fate from a virus perspective and a policy perspective.

we've had issues with crowding at hiking trails and in the parks around the city. my town shut down all the city playgrounds and facilities (restrooms, tennis and basketball courts, etc) but my neighbordhood playground is still open, and has been more full of people than I have ever seen it. Unless there are limits on number of people in a group golfing, limits using carts or fully sanitizing them, and good staggering of groups on there course there will still be a lot of human interaction. Plus the maintenance of courses takes a lot of manpower, so that is a lot of workers who are going to have to show up to work and interact with each other/guests. I have been out disc golfing, but that is very self regulated, courses aren't maintained like regular golf, and it is way less popular than regular golf.
The biggest thing about the AZ governors order is the he prohibits cities and towns from closing down businesses he put on the "essential" list - so my town couldn't shut down the golf courses, salons, etc. even if they wanted to.
