What should we watch next? We have Hereditary, Green Room, Locke, First Reformed, Waves, Swiss Army Man, Under The Skin, and The Farewell on the shortlist.

Hereditary and Green Room are both as good as advertised. Both are horror, I guess, but two different parts of the genre.

hereditary is a unique kind of mind fuck. You should watch that.

All of these are so good but I couldn't make a list of 9 films that are so different from one another. Hereditary is my personal favorite on this list, but I have love for all of these.

Hereditary is good. I think it's a little less serious than some people do. I thought it was kind of a comedy? Maybe I was just really high.
Green Room is amazing. It's not *about* much, as far as I can tell, like on a thematic level, other than skinheads are bad. It's riveting and terrifying and extremely well-made. I was shouting at the screen through the movie.
The Farewell was good but also heavily overrated.
Lighthouse is better than Ex Machina, but whatever. I bet a lot of voters haven't seen it. Go watch the Lighthouse, folks. They shot it in the Academy Ratio and everything.

For anyone that's interested, the thought process and physical execution of shooting The Lighthouse is pretty fascinating. They were limited by the actual film and lenses that still exist that can pull off the orthochromatic look in the aspect ratio they wanted. They literally had Panavision re-build a bunch of old lenses for them. And all those old film resources meant they had to light the ever living shit out of the set and didn't get dailies back for, like, a week. There were so many insane limiting factors going on it makes the movie even more of an accomplishment. And they only got the go-ahead to do all that because The VVitch was so succesful.
I haven't looked at this in a minute. Would've voted Lighthouse and tied it. Ah well, Ex Machina is cool too.
One of the nice parts of this tournament is that there were multiple movies I would have been okay with winning. I voted for Ex Machina, but I would have been completely fine with The Lighthouse winning as well.

Hereditary and The Farewell were both so good. I loved the psychological and family of origin overtones in Hereditary, and the way they play out throughout the film in the different characters. It was genuinely terrifying too. Interesting score and crowning at the end, felt like Ari was already thinking through and prepping Midsommar, which I also love.
The Farewell was such a good blend of tragedy and comedy, both so sad and so funny at times and really hit home in some ways coming from a family that keeps secret and tells lies. I thought Awkwafina was great in it.
Both solid films. I think First Reformed, Green Room, and Swiss Army Man are up next.
Also, I am totally fine with Ex Machina and The Lighthouse winning, but I think Moonlight went out way too early.
