it’s true for any fest that if you want to sell out three years in a row, you should appeal to the base you’ve built. Otherwise, you’re kind of digging yourself a hole in trying to explain why a complete change of course would sell out when you’ve likely lost a very dedicated base.
Edit: also, again this seems silly and counter to the whole point of the game. There's a goal to sell 70k tickets and stay within the general spirit of the festival, not sell 70k tickets to the exact same group of people that attended in 2019.

Gets to a point where you gotta change course otherwise your base gets bored and restless. Booking the exact same kind of shit every single year is why Bonnaroo started having problems to begin with.
And if a goal of this draft was to keep the same attendees, it should have been in the rules. All it says is sell tickets, keep genre diversity, and keep in mind both recent and earlier iterations of the fest.
I'd also note that Bonnaroo has been very specific with the types of guitar based music and hip hop they've booked in recent years, yet nobody is raising a red flag over people's choices in those categories.
Pretty sure Loretta Lynn's big 80th birthday show at whatever the Nahville arena is called these days was a farewell kinda deal. I saw her 10 years ago and she played maybe an hour, had guest singers for half of it, and sat in a chair whenever she got winded. Which was a lot.
did she say she’s done though?
I don't see anything about official retirement, so no challenge from me. But I can't imagine reading any reviews of that show (actually her 87th birthday) and thinking she would be a good idea for an outdoor festival at age 89. One of my favorite singers of all time, but not a good booking for 2021.

Know this from personal experience :/
Gonna say there's probably a slight difference in changing the focus of a mostly single-genre based festival as opposed to slightly altering the subgenres of a particular type of music at a multi-genre festival.

Bonnaroo started having problems likely because they booked that 2016 lineup. Keeping attendees is a move to sell tickets, I think this should be obvious. Again, if you want to shift directions, then you’ve put yourself in a rough spot. Booking a bit of wook stuff goes a long way for moving tix to these kinds of festivals.

We've got a band that is literally followed by a traveling circus of wooks, we'll be fine on that front.
I also think it's kind of ridiculous that there's just this assumption that crappy wook EDM is why Bonnaroo started selling better in 2018. They were featuring the exact same kinds of artists in 2016. I think it's just that 2018 and 2019 had better overall lineups.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Did y'all just give up on Aphex Twin?
We are having issues with Aphex Twin and System of a Down management teams. SoaD said they won't play a festival headlined by Coldplay. We are hopeful something will get worked out.
(5) The Other mainly books electronic/EDM/rap acts, and your lineup is expected to reflect this. You don't have to follow any of the guidelines here, but if you want to take the risk, it's up to you.

Richard is gonna be pissed that he agreed to play Roo against his better judgment and they won't even list Aphex on their lineup promo.
After agreeing, he heard that there will be a mob of protesters at his show picketing about how unrealistic it is that he is there. Mob leader Rummy really damaged the way he views the festival. So we aren't currently sure if he will be playing.
