The very first minute had me thinking "oh this is going to be tough to sell people on" but then it got more in line with the story the show wanted to tell. So good and so many things left in the subtitles/background that require another viewing.

We should figure out a protocol for spoilers. Like, starting after episode two or three anything that isn't a leak is fair game to talk about after air?

Abra joined the oldest and I for the first episode. The kid and I have read the book whereas she had interest based off the trailer. Within the first minute, her reaction from the other end of the couch was "What in the f*ck?" The kid and I are in. She may or may not continue as sci-fi/fantasy isn't really her thing.

Should I read the book??
It's a pretty quick read, so there's not much to lose by doing so. They've changed several things around already, but nothing that shifts the overall flow of the story. For example, the big one that has gotten all the men's rights idiots stirred up beforehand is (minor first episode spoilers)

watched ep1 last night, loved it. very excited to see Jurnee Smollett, since we not too long ago finished a rewatch of Friday Night Lights.
the show is just beautiful to look at. so many of the shots look like works of art, even if it's just a minimalist shot of a field with a windmill in the background. loved the concert at the block party, great scene, and just all the little vignettes of them on the road, the shot at the ice cream place comes to mind, it strongly reminded me of a Nighthawks:
they might have mentioned that on The Watch, sometimes i'm not sure what is an original thought or what i steal from them.
backing out from the details, the story is super engaging. so much mystery, very excited to see where it goes. but if the shots stay as beautiful as they are, i'll be happy to just let the show wash over me even if the story gets absurd, which is always a possibility with a supernatural show like this.

OMG I KNOW SHE CARES. please please please tell her to watch this episode. It's at least on the level of Watchmen importance. It is SOOOO important that we see a black lead and group who are into sci-fi in that era. It's sooooo fucking relevant.
I wrote my previous text before this. BUT THIS. I was even in the, this is too slow burn until the chase scene. But this is going to be some hard hitting shit unless they really bailed out on the concept (just scanning through their "coming up" trailer)

She didn't watch episode 2 but that's partly because she got back from work super late. She may pick it up at some point or not. It could go either way. Watchmen may actually be an easier sell now that I think on it.

I loved the episode but it seems like a bunch of people online found it divisive or even bad. I particularly like the idea that they stuffed so much into this one. Felt like it could have been a season finale so now I'm excited to see where they go next.

A show that can piss off people that much and be this good means they have legs. The fact that this is about white supremacy when the books were about white supremacy is also making them angry. Which tells you more about them than you.

Yeah, i'm sure that's a part of it. I also saw people on Reddit saying they loved the first episode but thought this one was a mess which I didn't feel Though it definitely was loaded with plot. Alan Sepinwall at Rolling Stone made a great point about how if this were a Netflix show they would have stretched a full season out of what we just got. They'd have 3 episodes of the protagonists just lurking around the spooky house and junk like that.
I think i'm all in but get that this is a weird mix of a show. I think my mom was more interested in the historical drama side of things and was a bit less into it when shoggoths were jumping around the woods biting heads off lol.

Not sure if it's what is pissing people off, but I felt episode two had much larger differences than the book compared to episode one.

I thought episode 2 was an insane mess. But I also really liked it. I also generally like shows that leave me asking wtf is happening here (watchmen, leftovers, etc).
Having said that, everything about the first episode left me awestruck, and I didn't have that feeling in episode 2. They were just throwing so much stuff at me I didn't have time to let it sink in.
It's totally possible this show falls to pieces, but I have faith that it won't. Right now I choose to interpret the change to a breakneck manic pace in episode 2 as a sign that the show runners are bold, not confused.

Yeah, a hell of a lot happens (Shoggoth birth via cow, tons of new characters, a bunch of fakeouts and introduction to a full on cult). I'd say the one thing that really stood out to me, though, was the Whitey's on the Moon song being used during the big ceremony thing. That felt similar (though not as powerful) to the James Baldwin montage of the first episode.
Definitely plowed through a ton of plot/story in this one episode though.
