With RHCP out and The Strokes the likely replacement, do we think Rage would actually move to Sunday as they're now the "biggest" of the three? (I'm selfishly hoping that happens because i have to miss Saturday for a wedding in the city.)

Rage just feels like an odd festival-closer to me for some reason, but they definitely could be Sunday. I could also see Foos being on Sunday with Rage Friday and The Strokes Saturday

Having just seen Foos and Strokes at Shaky Knees, I don't care about missing either one at BC... Which means Rage will definitely end up being Saturday and I'll be annoyed at my friend forever for getting married on Boston Calling weekend.
I put together a mock. Based on 2020's with 13 artists per day, not including DJs or comedians. It's more optimistic than what I think we'll actually get and I didn't check all the tour dates so some of these artists might be ruled out, but let me know your thoughts.

I don't believe Bartees is ruled out. On his site he is off from May 12 until July 9. He is opening for someone in March in Boston, but that should be fine to be on the undercard.

I said he was opening for someone, didn't realize it was Car Seat. I still doubt that would exclude him from being an early act one of the days of the festival though.

They've booked undercard artists who've headlined in Boston area clubs and ballrooms within a few months of the festival, so I wouldn't rule out someone opening at House of Blues two months earlier.

It probably makes sense to include everyone they recently followed on Instagram before the more recent "throw 'em off the trail" follows. So, Pom Pom Squad, Oliver Tree, OG Swaggerd!ck, Mob Rich, The Backseat Lovers, Maggie Rose, HINDS, Blackbear, Charlotte Sands, Paris Jackson, and Julie Rhodes should all be in the lineup.

I decided to put different artists on my mock instead

Fair enough. Nothing's canon until it's officially announced and, even then, there are always a couple of lineup changes after the poster drops.
This is doubtful, since there don't appear to be any other U.S. festival dates on their tour, but Robert Plant and Alison Krauss would be a perfect Blue Stage closer on the day that they lean Americana on Blue (likely RATM/RTJ day). It would also explain the lack of any New England dates on their tour, when they're otherwise doing a good job of covering the northeast.
The timing is near perfect, in any event.
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss 2022 Tour Dates (U.S. only, European dates follow):
06/01 — Canandaigua, NY @ CMAC 06/03 — Saratoga Springs, NY @ Saratoga Performing Arts Center 06/04 — Forest Hills, NY @ Forest Hills Stadium 06/06 — Clarkston, MI @ DTE Energy Music Theatre 06/07 — Chicago, IL @ Jay Pritzker Pavilion 06/09 — Indianapolis, IN @ TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park 06/11 — Columbia, MD @ Merriweather Post Pavilion 06/12 — Philadelphia, PA @ TD Pavilion @ The Mann 06/14 — Cary, NC @ Koka Booth Amphitheatre 06/16 — Atlanta, GA @ Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park

I’m confused as to why you’re convinced BC will book an Americana act closing the blue stage since it’s literally happened once since it moved to Harvard (Brandi Carlile) but that would certainly be an interesting booking

They'd be head to head with RTJ. Boston Calling hasn't had a Blue Stage closer overlap with the main stage headliner since some partial overlap between Sigur Ros and Chance The Rapper in 2017. (Got to make sure that all of the Brandi Carlile fans don't have to miss Travis Scott, you know? )

I'm defining Americana kind of broadly, as in "likely to play Newport, Beach Road, or Railbird festivals." By that criteria, I'm including Brandi Carlile, Hozier, and Fleet Foxes/The Decemberists.

its too bad beach road is so inaccessable, not just to people that dont gave a car but in general. i have passes but i may not end up going depending how long the commute each day will be. since theres no way in hell im spending a grand on an airbnb

I said to myself yesterday that I was going to spend the money and do it, since I wasn't ready to do seated or indoor shows when three of my favorites -- Wilco, Jason Isbell, and Dawes -- just played Boston and all are at Beach Road, plus a lot of other good stuff.
The problem is that all of the travel packages they're offering are based upon double occupancy and the purchase of two festival passes. I hate wasting food on a plate, much less paying double to go to the festival. (Hotels on island are fully booked, but they're running shuttles from designated hotels on the Cape to the Woods Hole ferry and there are buses and ferries which go from Boston to that area.)
I'm doubtful that any of those three artists are going to play in the immediate Boston area in 2022, between the recent shows, Wilco at Solid Sound and Beach Road, and Isbell and Dawes at Beach Road. Just hoping that they all come back to town in 2023. I'm not getting any younger and healthier, and the country isn't getting any saner, and I don't know how many good years of concert-going I have left in me. At this point, I'll settle for seeing all of my two dozen or so favorite currently active artists one more time, along with a few never seen bucket listers, like The Strokes.
We're definitely overdue for My Morning Jacket in Boston, but I fear that they may end up playing in Mansfield next time around.
Really, for the car-free, it's easier to travel farther from one big city to another big city for a show than it is to get to one of these seaside resort towns. I'm going to keep an eye on the Forest Hills calendar for 2022 and might go down for a show or two to see a band that's skipping Boston.

1. I'm a little surprised they don't have shuttles to/from the Mansfield commuter rail station to Great Woods.
2. Selfishly, MMJ at Mansfield would be great
3. Mansfield seems too big for MMJ
Sadly, the MBTA commuter rail is exactly that, with very little service late at night. The last time I checked a few years back, the last inbound train left Mansfield around 9 pm. Even if the station was next door to the venue, you'd only be able to catch the opening act.
Many years ago, charter buses ran from Boston to Great Woods (back when it was called that) for shows, but that ended years ago.
Yes, Mansfield does seem too big for them, but they don't seem to have much trouble filling Red Rocks and Forest Hills.
Apart from the remote location, my complaint about the Mansfield amphitheater is that there's far more exposed metal and concrete in the construction than I remember from shows I caught at Saratoga Springs and Mann Music Center a long, long time ago. There was more wood used in those amphitheaters for better sound.
I've been to shows in Mansfield four times in the late 80's - early 90's. At the shows where I was in the first couple of rows, the sound was fine. More than a dozen rows back, though, the venue design started taking its toll on the sound quality.

The Forest Hills shows didn't sell out, though. Red Rocks is an outlier. BC makes sense to me. No Boston date on the fall tour and booked in numerous Spring festivals already. They could be in the QOTSA/The National type of slot?
Otherwise, Boston doesn't have a great fit for a venue for them unfortunately. I can't see them filling Mansfield, although they did play Merriweather this year. Maybe multiple nights in Seaport? Or Mansfield with a big opening act like they did with Isbell at Merriweather a couple years back.

Aren't they a bit too big for a Red/Blue closer at Boston Calling? In any event, I'm not sure if the usually 75 minutes that the subheadliners get at BC would do them justice.
I don't think, though, that they're necessarily too big for the waterfront pavilion, with its 5K capacity. The last time they were in town six years ago, they did two nights at the Orpheum (and didn't repeat one song). If they're not actually selling out Forest Hills, maybe a 5K capacity venue is the right location for them.

yeah I don’t see MMJ ever headlining BC again. they’re a red or blue closer at best. I’m expecting 2 nights at roadrunner or an agganis date next time they come here.
