Is their record so good because they’re good or because they’ve only played one ranked team so far this year?
Yeah unfortunately Houston doesn't have the sterling resume of Rutgers, who have played ranked opponents seven times and won once.
UH is 4th in the kenpom rankings, which are based on statistical performance and not record like polls. 6th best offense and 12th best defense in the country. Yes they are actually good.

kenpom rankings this year are a bit dicey without much non-con IMO but I do think Houston is legit good

This is likely true but it could mean they (as well as others) are overrating the Big Ten as much as anything. The highest-ranked team in their rankings who has lost is Ohio St, for example.
FWIW I have Houston over Rutgers in my bracket. I’m just curious to get a strengths and weaknesses opinion on Houston so I have more knowledge going into the game.

Idk why Ohio State was seeded so high. Iowa is the best team in the B10 and Illinois is really good right now. I didn’t have any other B10 teams in my elite 8.

They're fairly deep at guard with a lot of size for the position and relatively small in the frontcourt. Best player is Quentin Grimes, 6-5 guard. He's the only guy as of now that projects to be in the league next year, probably a late first or early second round pick. They also have another guard at that height named Dejon Jarreau. Those two guys account for a good number of boards. Jarreau is more of a playmaker, while Grimes scores the most. Their best "big" is 6-7 forward Justin Gorham. He gets about nine rebounds a game. All three shoot 36+% from three, with Grimes at 41%.
So they're undersized in the front court and oversized in the back court. They stand a chance of getting bodied by a bigger more physical team, and Rutgers has a ton of size at guard, too. Will be interesting to see the guard matchups and how Houston handles Rutgers's big guy Myles Johnson.
Funny that one of the Rutgers players (Jacob Young) is from Houston, out of Yates. Funny now but not after hearing it forty times on the broadcast later today.

Myles is a solid and intelligent big man but he is by no means taking over and dominating a game. If he puts up 15-10 it would be an outstanding performance. His value is on the boards and defensive end. At the end of the day, Rutgers is either going to come out hot scoring via Ron Harper, Jr., Geo Baker, and/or Jacob Young, or they’re not. Either of those guys can catch lightning on any given night, or in any given stretch of the game. Their team defense is really good against any team that doesn’t have a star such as Garza or Cockburn, so it sounds like this could be a close one.
Rutgers beat Clemson on pure hustle. The teams were pretty much even with probably a slight edge to Clemson. I haven’t seen Houston but they’re probably a lot more athletic.

That was a really bad game for rutgers and they gutted out a win.
Also, giving the slight edge to Clemson even though they lost is the most sang thing ever lol
I was not impressed by Rutgers. I was disappointed in our effort. Every loose ball and scrap for a rebound went to Rutgers, we couldn’t buy a 3 and still had a chance to win.

The real difference in the game was Sophmore Caleb McConnell coming off the bench with 13-10-3-1-1 on 50% shooting in 24 minutes. Harper, Baker, and Mathis all underperformed. I can’t imagine they are all ice cold a second game in a row.
