Fans losing their shit, which is understandable given who they pursued first, but I see this as similar to what Duke and UNC have done with their current coaches: guys with strong ties to the university rather than splashy names. Pope ran a super three-point-heavy, motion-heavy offense at BYU, and that's basically the ideal way to play basketball to me.
Rather hire a wholesome guy with ties to Kentucky than Pearl, Beard or Miller, who seemed like the next tier if we weren't ready to wait for the Bulls' season to end.

If there's a guy you think they should have hired, that's fine. I've mentioned the other names that were out there and I definitely think it's a better move to go with Pope than a dirtbag like Chris Beard just cuz he's made the title game. That's probably who we were looking at in the next tier of resumes. I don't think the AD thinks it's a panic hire.
They've already raised 4 million in NIL commitments for this year, as of this morning. That's as much as any basketball team is thought to have spent on it last year. This massively energizes the donor base, which is the most important recruiting concern in the current landscape.
As far as tourney success, it's BYU. I think we are all capable of understanding the difference. Dan Hurley had two wins at Rhode Island before being hired at UCONN, and he's on top of the world now.

Seems like only a matter of time before he was an NBA head coach. He was one of the three finalists for the Brooklyn job and was also considered for the Suns lead job when it went to Vogel. Great get for BYU. Wonder if he's related.

My brother was hired as an assistant coach at Pepperdine. He's been toiling at high schools, prep schools, did his GA at Marshall with Dan D'Antoni. He's trained a couple of pros like Kuminga, Miles Bridges (told him to maybe not put that one on his resume), and Keldon Johnson. Anyway, he moved to Malibu last weekend and started Monday. Going to become a huge WCC basketball fan I gues!

One of Wake's promising freshmen just transferred there. Think he'll be a stud for them.

5th now after Brandon Garrison (C, Oklahoma St.) commits. McDonald's All-American with three years of eligibility, little bit of a project guy that will probably come off the bench. Seriously good rim finisher already though, and a big body.
UCONN got Mahaney (PG, St. Mary's) so I needed that.
I'm having so much fun watching the staff build this roster from scratch.
the portal sucks. hope they figure out a way to fix it
What about it sucks? You don't want players to go where they want? How would you *fix* it?
It sucks to lose players but they're autonomous humans.
all of it sucks. we got kids playing for 5 schools in 5 years. theyre seeking out pay days and dont care about ball. recruiting is dead. rivalries are dying, conferences are all but dead. money runs CBB and CFB more than ever and its gross.

Also it’s not about being a student athlete anymore. There’s no way these kids going to 4 schools are graduating.

So you don't think labor should be compensated for its value here. Only the universities and coaches should be paid. Or if you do, you have no suggestion as to how the current system could be improved.
I cannot take someone moaning about "student athletes" in D-1 in 2024 seriously. That hasn't been a thing in our lifetimes.

I don't take issue with the concept of athletes making money, so I actually really like the NBA. Because I like basketball. All of this other stuff is ancillary.
Even NBA and NFL players have contracts and just cant jump to a new team every season. The NCAA needs to allow the schools to pay the players directly and then limit the amount of times they can enter the portal.

Scholarships have only ever been one-year renewable deals. No one complained when the universities could yank them at any moment. 4-year contracts aren't happening.
