the sport has been run on an illegal model for the last 90 years and no one really wants to do the work to make it comply with the law, so it will take a bunch more 9-0 decisions at the supreme court before the steady state is reached
The direction it’s going it’s going to be a professional league. I want there to be a difference because college athletics are a lot more fun to me. If they did NIL the way it was intended that would have been great but it turned into pay for play and free agency.
Scholarships have only ever been one-year renewable deals. No one complained when the universities could yank them at any moment. 4-year contracts aren't happening.
why wouldnt the future NCAA Players union want 4-year contracts

Yes, I think that is fine. I don't know how people working for free makes something more enjoyable.

They should get money for their NIL, but they shouldn’t be paid to come to the school. There’s a difference.

The fictional union you just made up might want 4-year deals. But they'd be bargaining with a side whose position has always been the complete opposite.
Athletes and schools could sign multi-year NIL deals now. They generally don't.

i mean come on how does the end game here not end in a players union and a collectively bargained agreement to get around the antitrust issues. its insanely obvious

I just don't see the issue with people looking for market value.
Also, from what I've seen, very few players are making decisions based on that anyway. It's really a handful. Johnell Davis, Jayden Quaintence.. those are the only two players that I've heard of so far getting in massive bidding wars. Blue bloods aren't really getting in on those. Not in the portal. Maybe in freshman recruiting theyre bidding for guys, but for the most part they can just go find another guy. I think if anything there may be a bubble propping up what those two guys have landed. If a booster pays a player 1.5M in NIL or something and they don't deliver, they're not gonna love doing that again.
I think in the portal you're mostly seeing the same programs that have always done well doing well. Indiana has the best class. Connecticut is getting dudes in the portal, because obviously. The Jerry Jones/Arkansas stuff about doubling any UK offer is obviously bluster or simply irrelevant, because we just won a portal battle with them. It's really not a huge deal for a college basketball player to get a couple hundred thousand bucks and a nice car from a dealer when they're playing on ESPN twice a week.

I simply don't care because it's so far down the road and again my main point is there aren't going to be 4 year contracts.

And truly, unionizing 18-23 year olds on a national scale in the United States, a country that hates unions, when there's gonna be a ton of scabs waiting in the wings to play college sports if they get the opportunity.. sounds really difficult and isn't something I would take as a given.
all of it sucks. we got kids playing for 5 schools in 5 years. theyre seeking out pay days and dont care about ball. recruiting is dead. rivalries are dying, conferences are all but dead. money runs CBB and CFB more than ever and its gross.
So you don't think labor should be compensated for its value here. Only the universities and coaches should be paid. Or if you do, you have no suggestion as to how the current system could be improved.
I cannot take someone moaning about "student athletes" in D-1 in 2024 seriously. That hasn't been a thing in our lifetimes.
lol labor. cmon man. a full scholarship plus all of the incentives that comes with being a D1 athlete is a lot. players deserve to make money of their name but the way it is now aint it.

i mean if you are provided a full scholarship, private flights and facilities, etc, etc yea you should have to maintain a certain gpa to remain eligible

even if you take away NIL for big or even upper mid programs they come in on a a full ride. first class training facilities and travel accommodations that the reg student doesnt get. Free housing and meals, travel the country and even parts of the world for free. free apparel. Play on national tv. CFB bowl games give away thousands of dollars worth of free shit to players too. making it sound like its child labor and they just play ball and get nothing in return has always been crazy to me. its all gonna go up in flames sooner rather than later as these NIL people funding the programs get mad when the guy they shelled out big bucks for sits the bench and scores 0-4ppg and actually stinks.
again, all for kids making money off their name but things cant go on like they are now.

Right. One argument against 4-year contracts.
yea thats never happening but somethin like 2-4 year commitments with basically opt outs to go prop would be better. the transfer rules need to tighten up in a big way.
"I don't know anything about it and also don't care, but I don't like it!"
Your lack of genuine interest in the college game is pretty obvious. I think if you followed it closely you'd know that the supposed problems you're talking about are vastly overstated by you.
no, see i love college hoops and watch it more than the NBA. but, i dont care to follow what teenagers are doing in the off season as a grown adult and like we said its not the kids fault. i watch the end result of the portal.

But those "kids" should be forced to stay at the same school because they play sports. Then you'd be happier. Even though any other student can transfer at any time.

Do regular students go to a new school every year? Seriously asking because I don’t know.

If they want to?
Yall are way overblowing this "different school every year" thing. That is very uncommon. Almost everyone Kentucky added has played at exactly one other school in their career, and those are mostly seniors. The WVU kid played at two. Their credits still have to transfer, etc.

There’s a lot of kids going to 3 or 4 schools. One issue that probably only matters to the fans of the schools, who do you say these guys played for when you look back on it? Bad example because this guy isn’t going pro or being honored for anything, but when they’re talking about Jack Clark they’d go Jack Clark from Lasalle, NC St, Clemson, VCU! Just awkward. There’s going to be no loyalty to a school anymore. That’s going to be hard on fans.

lol there's always been rules to transferring that are all ignored now. you wanna transfer you used to have to get an ok from the coach and then you are ineligible for a year.
