Bears didn't hire Jeff Ireland which is great news for us. Rapoport says Coach Payton is going to retire. Not so much you Pablo, but Cowboys fans have been trying to claim him for a decade. He's not going to Dallas - at least not at this point. Maybe Dennis Allen takes over as HC?
Always felt like Dennis Allen was one in a line of Raiders coaches who got a raw deal.
You might be right. It's hard to say how he might have otherwise fared. But pretty much everyone here loves him and wouldn't complain if he was to become HC.
As for the $70MM over the cap, that's every year. Usually it's $100MM+ we have to cover for. We'll lose a couple of good players to free agency as we always do. But kicking the proverbial can into the future was the price for us to jump to the front of the line and stay there.
yeah I don't see why the Packers/anyone who gets arod or the cowboys don't go all in. if I were the Cardinals I would dump kliff for Sean easy
It would almost take a mint to pull it off if Coach Payton was interested in doing it somewhere else. He's still under contract for 3-4 more years, so any franchise would have to negotiate through us to sign him. I'm sure we'd work with him if there was something he wanted to do. But business is business. It's probably going to take a few #1 picks and loads of cash to get it done.
it's just weird your saying he's too loyal to the saints to want to go anywhere else and that the saints will hold him hostage and not let him leave if they must in the same sentence
That's not really what I said or at least meant to say. I'm sure they would work with him like the Texans did with Ingram. But it's not going to be cheap. Maybe they loosen up on a demand or two as he's leaving on good terms.
FWIW, Dennis Allen is supposed to be interviewing in Chicago today. Hopefully they didn't let his plane leave Armstrong Airport or at least told him don't sign anything until he gets back and we can work shit out - if that's the direction we're going.
he's not even that old, McCarthy is older, he's not going out on top, he's whimpering away from a team in a bad situation or he's angling for a better job, and he seems like someone who's not just going to roll over and that be his last bullet on his resume
I don't think it's his last gig. He's tired and burnt out. If he wants to coach, he will. If he wants to go to NFLN or become a broadcaster, he will do that. He's for sure isn't going out on top but is most certainly not going out on the bottom either. The situation with the team isn't particularly dire. We were a Rams fuckup away from being a menace in the playoffs.
I think it'll be a little while before the loss of Coach Payton really sinks in, but I hope that we promote Dennis Allen. His defenses have been dynamite for us these past few years. I'd rather keep it in house than go external for the new HC. The only reason the Saints weren't an NFC contender all year was because of injuries. Say what you want about our QB situation, we were solid with Winston. But we never had receivers with Thomas out, and we played numerous backups on both sides of the ball every single game. I feel like if they look external for the HC spot, then it signals rebuild. I don't think this team is a rebuild team.
He def is running away, not sure how else you could read this
Not sure how you're reading it that implicitly either. If he's stepping away, it's probably burnout. This year was tough on him personally, and the team had every major misfortune possible from having to relocate the first month, to injuries at all positions, to having to start 4 or 5 QB's over the course of the season, to a biased approach to NFL officiating*, to who knows what else he might have going on personally. If he wants to hang it up for a while and maybe start fresh in a couple years somewhere else, no one (with a brain) in New Orleans and no Saints fans are going to hold that against him.

I'm just reading it as a guy who has a challenge in front of him, no real QB available, cap troubles, and he's running away. That's just how I interpret it, and so are a lot of other people.

I mean, I don't blame him. He doesn't need the money. He has nothing to prove. Take some time off and then take your pick of gigs. Once the Saints have hired a coach, if he decides he wants to come back they can either fire that coach and rehire him (paying the fired coach the balance of his contract), pay him to not coach, or let him go free.

Most of them outside of the city. He always had a challenge in front of him. He came here while the city was in complete ruins. The cap 'troubles' are probably the least they've been in years since we're usually over $100MM in the hole. I'm not directing this at you - just aimed at the lot of other people part. There are plenty of people who pontificate about shit out there who really just repeat pieces parts of what they heard from someone else regardless of the potential departure from reality. Team is holding a press conference at 3:00. I'm sure they'll thank him for his service and say they're launching a search immediately. Believe me, Payton plans ever minor detail of everything he does. No way will he have left the team in a lurch. There will be a succession plan, and he'll either take a year or two off and return to coaching or he'll do something else. Pretty simple. It doesn't seem like "running away" when his entire tenure has been a challenge. He needs the time off for his reasons and then can resume coaching likely elsewhere when he's ready
If I was Payton I wouldn’t wanna stick around for a rebuild either tbh
We aren’t a rebuild team though. He’s ready. I just listened to him talk for like an hour and a half letting some walls down and being himself a little more than usual. That was a great press conference. But to your point, we were the 4 time division champions coming into 2021 and possibly would have gotten 5 had Winston not tore up his knee (among other issues). We still went 9-8 sometimes playing practically half practice squad team games. And we had what we needed to defeat the eventual NFCS champion Bucs even without our head coach. For sure decisions will have to be made as to what direction at QB we plan on going in. And either we need Thomas back and a mid or high round WR to compliment him, or go in big in FA. Otherwise an upgrade at TE and maybe a replacement part or two on D for who we have to release for cap space, it’s not that much. All teams will have needs in the offseason. One of the bigger things we need is our players to stay healthy. We’ll see how things go. I’m pretty sure that if we stay in house with Allen and can have a little better luck on all aspects of life than what we had to face this season, we are a few games over .500 team next year with the only caveat being it looks like a tough schedule (though you can never be sure from year to year).
Bucs x 2, Cards, Rams, Steelers, Ravens, Bengals, 49ers, as well as some at least midgrade teams like Raiders, Vikings, Browns and Eagles.
I don’t think so either. He will miss it and work something out. Bears called off their interview with Dennis Allen while reportedly finalizing a deal for GM Poles. Maybe that’s an indication of who our next head coach is.

Ii do follow the team closely. I’m not saying they can’t do a rebuild if they wanted to reset cap space and shit. But it’s more likely going to be more of a reloading which is generally what we do from year to year.

If it's Poles it's probably Bienemy, right?
because...he's from the chiefs? I don't think that's the case.
Were you wanting Quinn? Looks like for us it will be out of Allen or Glenn unless they go left field.
Preference for me is firing McCarthy and Moore and promoting Quinn, as of right now. Would hurt to lose Quinn. He turned a horrid defense into the strength of the team.
Someone sent me this:
ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio has a book releasing soon called Playmakers, and in the aftermath of the Payton news, he decided to share an excerpt from it where he notes that the Cowboys were set to trade for Payton in early 2019 until Anthony Davis asked to be traded away from the New Orleans Pelicans. Yes. You read all of those words correctly.
It was a delicate situation, for various reasons. First, the Cowboys had a coach. Jones wouldn’t have fired Garrett unless he knew he could have gotten Payton. Second, league rules (specifically, the Rooney Rule) require a diverse and inclusive search. Third, Jones had to ultimately know that, after going through the motions of a search, he’d be able to get Payton.
So a deal was worked out, behind the scenes. The Saints would have allowed the Cowboys to hire Payton. The Cowboys would have compensated the Saints for the rights to Payton’s contract. And Payton would have signed a new contract with the Cowboys.
It was ready to go. It was happening. It was locked, and it was loaded. Then came Monday, January 28. On that day, New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis announced he would not sign another contract with the team, and he requested a trade. (In July, the Pelicans traded him to the Lakers.)
Gayle Benson owns both the Pelicans and the Saints. Saints G.M. Mickey Loomis was, as of January 2019, the executive vice president of basketball operations with the Pelicans. Once Davis made clear his intention to leave New Orleans, Loomis told Payton that Loomis couldn’t be the common thread between a pair of such high-profile Louisiana departures.
That ended it, just like that. The Saints were no longer interested in essentially trading Payton to the Cowboys. In September, Payton signed a new contract. That deal has three years left on it.

Why not? Every year people lament that he's long overdue for a HC shot. Having a GM who knows him well makes sense.
I mean it's certainly possible. I just think it's a lot more complex than that. What if the new gm didn't think highly of him in KC? That's rhetorical, I don't know how he thought of him, but it's probably a good indicator if he doesn't hire the guy he knows.
