IMO, if you are already negative on the salary cap and DON’T have an elite QB and salary on the roster, you are rebuilding.
Not that you follow the Saints but what would you call their 2021 offseason? It was a reload or retool but certainly not a rebuild. We didn’t have an elite QB and were 30 million further in the hole. We did okay all things considered.
I think they have been in a state of retooling, but you're describing what was necessary having Brees and Payton.
what they probably do now is resign none of the guys you mentioned and start finding takers on Thomas.
they're in a bad spot of not having great draft capital but a QB could fall to them, but even then, all these guys in this draft are raw and you're still in the same boat. could honestly be better to trade out of the first if they don't love anyone just so they don't take the cap hit
I feel like they're smart enough to understand they need to fix the cap situation before they can do anything meaningful, and they're probably confident in their scouting to keep finding late gems rather than pay guys a shit load to go 8- or 9-8 every year

So first what I would say is yeah. The last 5-6 years or so that’s been the MO (a lot of seasons before but we were contending for titles. We didn’t get any but we got close a couple times and got into our 3rd NFCC game with that strategy. Loomis is an elite cap guru, probably top 2 in creativity. We don’t have that many free agents as was posted above. But they will have to make a decision on Armstead which LT is obviously crucial.
I think the only way we go wholesale would be if we hired a HC from outside the current staff (unlikely), and if Loomis and whoever that coach is aren’t sold on Jameis. I don’t think that’s all that likely either depending if they can work a deal they want. Pete Carmichael is the one that will probably make the recommendation. Payton got all the praise because everyone knows he’s a fucking offensive genius. Pete’s been our OC since 2009. I’m sure we rate among the best in most categories over that time span.
It also comes down to we can’t do that much in FA. I think the worst thing about the next couple years is really the dead money which we were over 40MM this year and have been working some of it through since we don’t have a choice.
I think Winston is worth letting walk, it's a band aid for a team that's trying to get to the playoffs that doesn't work.
We were 5-2 and had beaten the Packers, Patriots, Bucs (game he got hurt) and Seahawks (who were tough at the time) and had the dumb losses to the Giants and Panthers. Maybe any qb could have done it up to that point. I don’t know. But I wouldn’t hate a 3 year 65/70MM contract with maybe accelerators to 85ish. That gives us time to explore options. If they let him go or let him test FA and he wins, QB becomes our issue. A lot of shit needs to play out and we can look at shit in hindsight
He got hurt in that game. I already said earlier he was mostly doing what he was asked to do and not carry the team. Yet we were 5-2 after the game he tore his ligaments. It took a while to get our footing back after that with injuries, COVID, etc. I think we lost the next 5. He was growing on most Saints fans, many of whom didn't really like him because of some youthful indiscretions and petty crimes "thug", the fact that he was a Seminole and because he was a Buccaneer. I'm sure the general consensus of people who follow the Saints is that we would have had a munch better season than 9-8 had he been able to start all season. I don't think most people who don't really follow the Saints would or could disagree with the assumption either. I just don't know whether the decision makers are sold on him being a long term or even short term solution. I'm open to him getting a deal - maybe a more concrete one than the try it before you buy it contract he was on if not a long term break the bank kind of contract. Again, we'll see who they hire and what they plan to do once shit happens. Most NFL teams typically have a turnover of around 25% a year. I think we trend closer to 30% but I'm not 100% on that.
Jags hiring Adrian Wilson as GM. I truly don't understand how an organization with someone who seems as outwardly sharp as Tony Khan makes so many moronic moves

Still an upgrade tbh
if the decision to hire urban was Baalke's then yes. But I think that was Shad's call. Baalke has attracted very sharp minds (IMO) to work under him in a number of stops such as Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Eugene Shen

Idk who any of those are but there are a lot of reports on how he plays a lot of office politics and is bad to work with. 49ers fans were glad he was canned, and jags are still at the bottom. Those minds or whatever haven’t really made his resume that impressive.
