I didn't go and count the trusses like some others (looking at you travelfan ! ) but it definitely looked smaller. probably a good change to make the tent feel fuller for some of the acts though.

I think this was a good move - around 2017 or so when they first expanded the grounds, it really felt like the Gobi and Mojave were the same size. Consequently a lot of Gobi acts felt criminally underattended and Mojave was too crowded.
Now it looks like the Mojave is huge and the Gobi is small - once again going from the streams, every Gobi act except for Caroline Polachek filled the tent, and Caroline half filled it. I didn't see one tent that felt super empty and in fact most artists played to a full tent, which has to help energy and morale. Gobi was just too big - they first made it smaller in 2019 and it feels even smaller now.
The Smile announced their debut album this morning, sure would be great if that went with a debut Coachella performance on Friday.
Yeah, or just sometime during the weekend. Florence dropping another new song today.
I would think Coachella would want to hold onto Florence in the event the new album is big and she can headline; at the least she could sub again, so not quite the same situation as Arcade Fire. But perhaps.
If Florence was gonna be big then she wouldve sold out her Hollywood Bowl show already and added a second night like she did last album cycle. Itll be #1 in the UK and it has to go against Kendrick now. So a top 5 debut might be in the cards for the billboard charts if it goes well.

My personal list of potential acts for that spot weekend 2 goes:
Arcade Fire The Smile Gorillaz Phoenix The Strokes NIN Florence
in that order. The further I get from the Arcade Fire show the more I'm into the idea of that being The Smile, but that was such a joyous show that I still have them #1.
How big was the crowd for The Avalanches? Seeing them weekend 2 but want to squeeze in the first 10 minutes of Phoebe Bridgers if their tent wasn’t too packed
The tent was mostly full but not too packed. We got there 10 minutes before they started and were able to get close. Set of the weekend for me.

I would like Gorillaz
Yeah, this is my main hesitation with the smile, especially knowing they won't play Radiohead stuff. But there are at least a handful of tracks out there, and those guys are so entertaining to watch and listen to that it would be great nonetheless.
Gorillaz would be no doubt great, especially if they can wrangle enough guests (Vince is already there, at least).

Apparently the NFT will get you an $18 drink voucher, which I hadn't heard mentioned before. That's enough to get me to do it given those tiki drinks are $17 alone.

All the NFT gave me was discomfort about having to enter my ssn in the app and several spam emails.
