Was just wanting to get others opinions on the best, cheapest, sturdiest, shade set-up if your unlucky and have no natural shade. I love Bonna but the only thing i hate is the heat and sun( is better than rain) shining on me all day. I missed alot of good bands cause i was just worn out from the sun. My anglo-crackerness just can't deal. But hey, if that's all i got to complain about then good deal. Anywho, what's your set-up?.. Rockin' Roo Cuc-a-choo
How about a nice umbrella, keeps the sun off and works great in the rain!!! Bring a tarp and some poles for your camp site. Keep your butt outta the sun as much as possible.

Awesome idea, Hootdaddy, to use the cheap shade structure as your "starter." Last year we just taped tarps together and although we were dry for most of the weekend, it started to fall apart Sun night when the rain got heavier and it was getting worn out. Hoot, got any tips to secure the seams from where the tarps and the shade structure join? Or just use duct tape (and more than we used last year)?
There's not enough duct tape in all the world to make the seams stay together with any serious wind, or even less than serious rain. My best solution was tying off the tarps on the top corners of the shade tent and using small bungees to pull everything together (while understanding/planning for inevitable leaks and/or unwelcome rays.
You want to keep it as simple as possible. Bungees instead of string, tape, etc. I bought a great package set of bungee cords (that included several small, light 4-5" cords) at Wal-mart that did the trick just great.

I'm confused about this whole tarp thing. I camp, a LOT, and how are you supposed to rig these things up? I'm planning on bringing one of those cheap screenhouses and 2 tents. Bungess and duct tape will be coming along too, but how do you keep the buggers up? Should I bring poles or something?
1. You get the $35 shade tent (12x10?) at Wally World.
2. You get tarps and bungees.
3. The sun comes in the shade tent at various angles throughout the day. Ergo, no or little shade.
4. You drape the tarps on the outside of the tent to create more shade inside. You use bungees (or twine, etc.) to attach the tarp's grommets to the tie offs at the top of the shade tent.
5. No duct tape or poles needed, unless you omit the shade tent. Not recommended.
6. Some people extend this arrangement with poles, ties off to their vehicles, or a zillion other arrangements. I would not recommend trying to connect tarps using duct tape unless you've got some HEAVY-DUTY tape and lots of it...even then, if we get rain, your tape job will be lucky to survive.
I'm planning now and going to build next week sometime a frame made of PVC piping. I'm still working out the plans so I can use a king size bedsheet for the shade and add sides when needed. I'm trying to work out a way for it to bend it so in the afternoon we still have shade. Nice thing is I found some solar powered light to attach to the top so when night hits I can find camp. (Battery powered that recharge using solar panels, 15 bucks for 4 at home depot.) This way when I'm half drunk and blitzed out my mind I can find home. When I get it built I'll post pics.

That sounds like a totally rad idea! The only thing i'd be worried about would be the sheet... if it rains, you're getting rained on. I like that solar powered light idea too. Home depot has them?? What aisle would they be under eh? I need to invest in some!

TheDrugs, That is a rather ingenious idea. Once you set it up, keep your measurements and bill of materials, that way i can share your plan. Shaderoo!!!! ---
I will. There is still some things I'm trying to work out. So far I can only find PVC piping in the size I want at 10 feet. I want 12, so I'm trying to get a work around. Does anybody remember how much space we have behind the cars? Width and length. I thought it was ten feet behind and such. Over in Alabama soup bowl we staggered the set up to give each other more room.
Hey, DoWork, I was at the intersection of ASB and the adjoining campground last year; we just worked around it with our neighbors. I had the white picket fence....
We were one row back from the guy selling ice and bottled water. He was the guy letting people out through his farm for ten bucks.
I'm going to attempt to build the shade tomorrow, so hopfully I'll have pic of my PVC and tarp set-up on Sunday. Unless it looks like crap, then it's back to the drawing board.
Doesn't look like crap ;D, but I do need to make a few adjustments. Need to shorten one side (in case it rains) and figure out a good way to reinforce one side. Still have to bevel the edges on the main supports to get it to stick into ground. So I'm gonna stop by my parents house and borrow a pipe cutter and when I'm happy with it I'll post the pics of the finished product. It'll work I just need to fix a few things.
I saw the pics of the outside of the bus, but after seeing the inside, I want one. So now I'm going to spend some time looking up how to do that to a bus.
Capttrips, I'm staying with you this year! ;D Don't be suprised when some random chick comes knocking b/c I've given you prior warning! hahaha! Your bus is the poo!(edited for those of you w/ virgin eyes)
It must be nice. I wish i could take all the pleasures of Babylon with me to Bonnaroo(mainly just the toilet). Hell, maybe i can just stay home and watch it on TV . Hey Drugs, perhaps you and i could collaborate and build an RV from PVC. MAybe even start our own shuttle service. On the serious tip, can't wait to see your set-up with the pvc. Peace
ive seen all the pics you posted of willow...very nice work. although i must ask...did you have to make the toilet pic MUCH larger that the others just to make us jealous? lol

i posted this somewhere else, but Ill post it again-light colored shower curtains work awesome-you just hang them on your shade tent with the shower rings-they move around easily and stay in place when you want them to!
"That's the big thing about education. People can be book smart, but not really intelligent about anything else. A lot of times they just taking in all this information and regurgitate it. It's much more important to process it and personalize it. To apply it to your world, to your life. You have to walk the walk, or you can't really report about it honestly."
Here's my idea for a tarp rigging... I'm a camping novice, so let me know if this won't work or sounds in any way moronic.
-15 x 15 Coleman Geosport hexagon shade thingy
-Tent underneath the hex shade thingy, with room to spare
-Tarp running from the hex shade thingy to the luggage rack thingy on the top of our Pontiac Vibe (good height), and here's what I'm thinking: secure it with zip ties (to the canopy and the car rack). Is there any reason that wouldn't work?

Sounds like a good plan.
I also have a Geosport but it's 16 x 16 will be interesting to see if it was worth the $ over the walmart cheapy
regarding your setup, i highly recommend you attempt it at home so you can perfect your method as well as shorten setup time @ roo
