That’s what I meant by something that’s only going to happen at a festival. Late nights can be special. Guests can be special. But usually there’s more things happening at fests that actually take away from the show. Tool at Bonnaroo was my least favorite Tool show. Same for Radiohead 12. Same for Pearl Jam 16. Any time we’ve seen Avetts outside of roo has been way better. I’ve even skipped Clutch the last 2 times they played. The only one I can think of that might have been better was NIN late night but it was ln and they went beyond what they normally do.
I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a band that played a better set at a festival. I pretty much always prefer to see bands at their own shows. Unless it’s something that’s only happening at the festival.
Tame Impala’s headlining debut at Panorama 2017 was a pretty sizable level up from when I’d seen them at their own shows prior to that.
I saw a couple videos of the Lizzo show last night in Minnesota; she’s got a full band now, at least ten backup dancers and a big video screen production. I don’t have any actual prediction on if she’ll play any festivals next year but it’s clear she’s at least gearing up for an arena tour soon.
