It was an absolute shit show. Ive never been to a more unprepared festival in my ten years of festival going. 4 water stations for 30k people. Food lines were at best 45 mins and most were way longer. Had a friend who waited for 1.5 hrs for water. No seperate places for just regular drinks hardly. Barely any shade. I saw several people pass out.
Music was good but thats literally the only thing.
They redeemed themselves on Sunday. The few times I was standing in a line on Sunday I was offered bottles of water by staff. No idea how they made such a turnaround overnight but we will definitely consider going back with the right lineup because I’m sure they have learned their lesson! I liked the size of the grounds (not too big but no sound overlap between stages) and I liked the audience they attracted. No stumbling high schoolers and despite the horrible lines and heat on Saturday, everyone we were around kept their cool. We did not wait more than 5 mins either day to get thru the gates and exiting at the end of the night on Saturday was the swiftest we’ve experienced of any major event! We did have onsite parking—not sure how the shuttle experience was. We left on Sunday before DMB so I can’t speak for the crowds that night.
Heat index of 98 on Saturday. Despite drinking 2 liters of water at the car before going in, I still almost passed out. I never figured out where to buy water. I went to 3 food stalls and none of them were selling drinks, "sorry, we only have food." The water refill stations had hour waits in full sun. I wouldn't have made it if I stood in that line. I parked my ass in the shade tent and stayed there all day, bought a water off a stranger. Saw zero bands. Did not return on Sunday.
In light of the Bonaroo gut-punch yesterday, it seems frivolous to reflect on a festival that actually happened in its entirety in 2021, but here are my Railbird reflections:
Things I liked: The grounds: Beautiful setting, spacious, plenty of room for the 30,000 attendees, no human bottlenecks. Unless you were in line… The lineup: It’s why we went, and we enjoyed every set we saw. It was great to connect with performers again. The crowd: Friendly, wide age-ranging crowd seemed to endure the elements without pushing, shoving, packing in, etc.
Things I didn’t like: Brutal, unrelenting sun and 90 degree heat.. This is the South, and it’s August. Not much different from New Jersey, though, in recent weeks… Lines. Covered elsewhere. Ridiculously long, we didn’t even try a line in the dinner hour or just after a set ends. We’ve learned to grab food and drinks early and late, but I feel bad for anyone trying a festival for the first or second time- many will never return to Railbird, or maybe any fest. There was one row of food vendors. They need two or three. Bars were more plentiful, but still had long lines. Water shortage. Unacceptable for any festival anywhere, and dangerous under the conditions. It was better on Sunday, with workers actively giving out water bottles.
Overall, I think this festival has great potential, but they need to address the food and beverage situation. A few easy fixes: Kiosks- there were like none. Put them in the areas between stages so we can grab something quick on the way to the next stage. Would be an easy way to reduce lines. Firefly usually does well in this area. Food trucks- again, only a couple were there. An easy way to set up an alternate food area. I can’t believe a college town couldn’t muster up a few more. And there are some good ones willing to travel to a fest (check out Shaky Knees for a good example).
I’d love to come back to Railbird, but only if these areas are addressed.

Weird to see Weezer on that lineup given where they're pivoting overall.
I wish this were more up my alley given that I grew up in Lexington and my parents live literally a 10-minute drive from Keeneland. But while I enjoy some of the twangy-twangy, I think it's a little too rich here for my blood.
Wow, big jump to headliner for Zach Bryan, who just last year played Railbird's tiny third stage. Solid undercard on this lineup, but I'll wait for the rest of the Spring lineups before committing to any.
Am going to be in Lexington visiting the fam before Bonnaroo, so looks like we'll be making this happen... If not both days, definitely Sunday for Goose.

It's not at Keeneland this time around. I think it's about 6-7 miles away.

Oh, shit! I missed that. The Red Mile. Heh. Last concert I saw there was The Smithereens in, like, 1995, or something.
So, this is an upgrade in centrality of location, but a downgrade in quality, for anyone curious. Keeneland is, like, high-falutin’ horse racing gentility. The Red Mile is more middlebrow - at least, it was when I used to go there, which admittedly was a couple decades ago. It’s going to be kind of like going from a fancy country club to your local pitch ‘n’ putt. YMMV on whether that’s a good or bad thing. I imagine traffic on Harrodsburg Road/S. Broadway, is going to be a nightmare…maybe they’ll restrict entry to the Versailles Road side of things.

Did you go to the failed rave there when they were forced to move everyone inside? I remember John B and Trevor Lamont were there. Maybe 99 or 2000?

Ah, no, that was after my time - I moved out of Lexington for the last time around '97. I can't remember the name of the event they used to hold in the infield there every year back in the early-to-mid-'90s - I just remember it was sloppy AF in terms of people being off their ass, and it sometimes had cool bands.

Damn sounds like your LexVegas era ended and then mine began. Just missed each other. Can't have too many cool ppl in that city at once, I suppose.

I almost bought pre-sale but it glitched out at $99 for a single day and then went up to $119. Then I was confirming with the wife and my 7 minute cart expired and it went to $139. All in the span of like 9 minutes. So I'm just gonna wait and keep an eye on seatgeek or stubhub.
