Btw I think I've seen Alice on two FA reveals now.
just to clarify: she was on my list at first (probably forgot to take her name off when I resubmitted it) but I took her off my final lineup and schedule.
Here's little blurbs about some of my picks for the undercard:
Afghan Haze - (CT) An interesting mix of doom, psych, and some other types of metal
Ahab - (Germany) Funeral doom metal. I once read a review of them referring to their album as a “soundtrack to a suicide”, which is fitting. If I’m mentally in a dark place, it probably sounds like the instrumental of The Hunt and/or Ahab’s Oath.
Alpha Wolf - (Australia) I found about this metalcore band while listening to Triple J recently. Feels like we needed some metalcore, and Australian bands are something different - so here you go. Something to mosh to mid-afternoon.
Bison - (BC) Straight up heavy metal. I saw them open for High on Fire at a small club in CT about 10 years ago and their set was fire.
Chassm - (Australia) It’s a fairly new band from Brisbane, their debut LP came out this week. They describe themselves as post-metal, but there’s sludge and doom elements in there as well. Thought the album was decent, and was worthy of an afternoon set. chassm.bandcamp.com/album/falling-forever
Divide and Dissolve - (Australia) Their album Gas Lit is one of the more underrated albums in 2021. Dark, heavy, and atmospheric.
Evoken - (NJ) One of the pioneers of the American funeral doom metal scene.
The Hotelier - (MA) Probably more emo than I’d typically like, but swings into punk territory. Local to myself and Katy Mae, before we both moved. I saw them at Boston Calling in 2017.
Ihsahn - (Norway) Better known as being in Emperor, one of the leaders of symphonic black metal. His solo work has some solid moments, and ventures into prog. If you were in the JQBX room last night, you heard that sweet sax goodness from Heavens Black Sea.
Make - (NC) You may remember their 2016 Pilgramage of Loathing. They’re also supportive of civil rights causes and were selling “Punch a Nazi” stickers for a while. So was worthy of an afternoon slot. thebandmake.bandcamp.com/album/pilgrimage-of-loathing-2
Man Must Die - (Scotland) Technical death metal
Mind Spiders - (TX) It’s punk but different. Can’t really explain it well. Just give it a listen.
Pontiak - (VA) Psych rock meets heavy metal
Vattnet - (NH) Better known as Vattnet Viskar, they had a couple of good black/doom metal albums. They broke up in 2018, but if Juggs can bring back Kyuss - surely we can bring Vattnet back for a one off.
Vital Remains - (RI) Their album Dechristianize is a Christmas time favorite of mine. Glen Burton of Deicide was lead vocalist for a few years in the mid-00s, including for the Dechristianize and Icons of Evil albums.
Vola - (Denmark) If you listen to Liquid Metal, you’ve probably heard the song These Black Claws. If you haven’t, they’re a prog-metal band with three Danes and a Swede.
