also before the show saturday i was talking to a guy, super nice, young. told him it was my first show and he got excited and started giving me the lay of the land: "they play a different setlist every night! like they don't close the show with the same big hit every night you know? and the songs don't sound like the albums, they play them different and really jam them, play them longer".
it was really sweet and i let him finish but i had to tell him i'm a phish fan so i know the drill. then we started talking about how good of a vocalist Rick was, and I went on a little monologue discussing the nuances of the various vocal abilities of members of the Dead, John Bell, Phish, etc., and he kind of got a distant look in his eyes.

this is great
to further emphasize the point, i also let him use my phone to call his girlfriend because he didn't have a signal. he needed her to buy him a ticket off stubhub for a CloZee show.

For Secretly Canadian’s 25th Anniversary Connecticut based Indie Groove band Goose covers the classic spiritual song “Sinnerman”. Their rework of the song, made famous by Nina Simone, radically transforms it’s gospel origins to something far more contemporary. A dancey groove battles with mathy guitar that places the song in a singular sonic space somewhere between Rüfüs Du Sol and Foals.
“Nina Simone's take on Sinnerman has been a point of inspiration for many years. We’ve been wanting to play it for a while, and this seemed like a perfect opportunity. We're honored to be a part of this compilation and be involved in the great cause behind it.” - Guitarist / Vocalist Rick Mitarotonda

Anybody catch an Orebolo show the last couple days??? One of my favorite things about Goose is how amazing their acoustic trio is when they play together. Listening to last night's show on Archive and it's incredible.
Set 1: Jive II, Doc Brown, Atlas {1}, All I Need > Drive
Set 2: Echo of a Rose, Same Old Shenanigans > Dawn, The Old Man’s Boat > You and Whose Army {2} > Arrow {3} > Tomorrow Never Knows {4} > Doobie Song
Encore: Madhuvan {5}
Coach’s Notes: {1} The Wood Brothers {2} Radiohead {3} Unfinished {4} The Beatles {5} During the jam, the curtain closed while the band continued to shred and Goedde lit up the curtain like a painting
yeah looks like a killer show. SOS > Dawn is my most listened to track off Shenanigans Night Club, beautiful song. Jive II, All I Need, and Madhuvan also on my "want to see live list".
goose is such a young band that if you catch a two night run you'll likely see like 90% of the songs on your wishlist.
the curtain thing in tickmark 5 is cool. the curtain was closed on night one, and opened as "Flodown" was starting. cool to see they closed the run using the curtain to dramatic effect.
anyway this band is great, go see them, "Slow Ready" is their best song.
Didn't know this thread existed at the time, but I caught Sunday! Living in macon now, drove up for MMJ Chicago and then caught the Goose afterparty on the way home. Was an epic show for sure, 1st set was 3/5 of my favorites (Jive II, ATLAS, Drive) and the 2nd set jams were real dark and weird. The Madhuvan encore was great, I've always wanted bands to make better use of venue curtains on the front of the stage so it was real nice to see the Goedde light solo encore. Just my second Goose show (#1 was 5/9/21 Caverns) and looking forward to 2 nights at the Nashville Brooklyn Bowl in March.

stark reminder that i'm 40 years old and have been enmeshed in this scene for most of my life, and not every goose fan is showing up with a fully formed knowledge of all the history that preceded them. they just like goose so they go see them live. and that is great.
the crowd was great, i felt very at home. mostly young but some older. minimal chomping in the balcony. at the end of the show Peter asked how many were at their first Goose show, i'm not sang_xcx so not good with counting people but i'd venture it was 50% of the crowd at least.
final observation: trevor (bass) is like an ice sculpture, still and cool, very comforting to focus on if you are feeling anxious. rick has those greasy cool good looks and is a hell of a guitarist but doesn't put out much more charisma then trevor does. then you have peter who is one of the biggest goofballs i've ever seen live. dude is swaying and dancing and grinning, impossible not to smile looking at him.
Was checking out some setlists in preparation for tomorrow's show and noticed they have a cover of "Can't Get You Out of My Head", which I really like? Definitely interesting to hear a spacey take on the song.
yeah that hot tea was really good (even though I was losing a lot of energy by that point lol) and I really like the echo of a rose reprises they did. Good stuff all around!
Oh, I almost forgot - during the second set they played Pat Benatar's "Love Is a Battlefield" and some guy behind stinky and I kept shouting out "KENNY LOGGINS!!!!!" so I had to google it twice to make sure Kenny Loggins did not, in fact, perform that song.
5.5/four tet, daphni b2b floating points, avalon emerson 5.12/neil young 5.19/mannequin pussy 5.21/serpentwithfeet 5.25/hozier 6.12-16/bonnaroo 6.28/goose 6.29/goose 9.17/the national + the war on drugs 9.23/sigur ros 9.27-29/making time 10.17/air
I’m rockin the YouTube Chicago show on my telle. That, a stiff drink, and left overs from lunch are the highlights of my New Years. Too fucking dangerous to get out. NO ONE is wearing a mask here.
Set 1: Arrow > Rosewood Heart, White Lights, The Old Man’s Boat, Sleepwalk {1}
Set 2: 2021 {2}, Flodown, One More Saturday Night {3} > Arcadia
Set 3: Wysteria Lane > Circle of Life {4} {5} > The Empress Of Organos {5} {6}, Creatures {7} > Your Ocean, Seekers On The Ridge pt 1 & pt 2
E: So Ready
Coach’s Notes: {1} Santo & Johnny Farina {2} Vampire Weekend {3} The Grateful Dead {4} LTP Goosemas 4, only 3rd time played, this song was played at the bands first show on 9.27.14. As the song ended, the countdown to 2022 began. At the end of the tune the band rang in the new year. {5} JonL played a 10 foot rain stick {6} JonL played fish & chimes on Jeffs kit {7} Axel F Teases

Happy to be back on the Goose at Bonnaroo hype train. Caught both nights of the NYE run and had an amazing time. Took all newbies and after (maybe they were humoring me) i got several "oh now i get it"'s. Probably won't have a chance to catch em again till Roo, but highly suggest everyone see them if they come close!
radio city music hall sold out and they added a 2nd show. i know NYC isn't always indicative of demand in other markets, but still that's really impressive for a band that in december 2020 was less popular than pigeons playing ping pong.
A good friend of mine has been to 89 Phish shows but has never heard of Goose. Which set is the starter?
the obvious choice is a show with an opener that grabs you by the throat, like "Flodown". but i'd go in another direction for your 89 phish shows friend and recommend a "Tumble" opener. "Tumble" doesn't leap from the speakers at you, it doesn't immediately scream "look at how talented we are", but it has these minor changes in the composed portion that demonstrate an unusual maturity in Goose's songwriting, but different enough from a typical jamband song that shows they are just ripping off any one band (but borrowing from quite a few bands).
then of course it launches into a massive fucking jam and you need that so.
but honestly Goose's youtube page is insane, so many high quality full show recordings. and they are kind of killing it every night so your buddy could just pick any show and go for it.

First leg of winter tour sounds great so far with all those new songs-LOVE the new single, and I'm hoping that this big debut string is building to another album announcement sooner or later.
