A thread for any and all things climate change related: science, policy, technology, ideas, discussion, whatever. Like it or not, climate change poses the greatest threat to human civilization as we know it, and it is already well underway. As human beings, I believe it is important for us to stay up to date and educated on the developments in this space because in the end it will impact all of us. It is REAL and it should be talked about so people who are misinformed or close-minded have an opportunity to understand!

Sorry to start the thread out with politics, but it is difficult to understate how critical this portion of the reconciliation bill is and I'm just mad about it right now:
Its like the most important piece of climate legislation possibly in the history of the world - given the United States' contribution to global emissions and our dependence on fossil fuels for energy production. Also, people want to get excited about electric cars, but guess how those get charged? On the electric grid. So if we all drive electric cars, but don't change our sources of electricity, we're still just burning fossil fuels. Really hope they can find a way to jam this one through.
I cannot engage with this right before bedtime because the climate crisis panic part of my brain is engaged 40+ hr/week, so I try to reduce any further unless needed outside of work hours buuuuut
Tomorrow once I’m on the clock I’ll probably come in to give a lengthy reply because FUCK JOE MANCHIN
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
"Written by 270 researchers from 67 countries, the report is an atlas of human suffering and a damning indictment of failed climate leadership"
"Rising heat and drought are killing crops and trees, putting millions worldwide at increased risk of hunger and malnutrition, while mosquitoes carrying diseases like malaria and dengue are spreading into new areas. Roughly half the world’s population currently faces severe water scarcity at least part of the year."
"The report also carries a stark warning: If temperatures keep rising, many parts of the world could soon face limits in how much they can adapt to a changing environment. If nations don’t act quickly to slash fossil fuel emissions and halt global warming, more and more people will suffer unavoidable loss or be forced to flee their homes, creating dislocation on a global scale."

I mean, you know I do lol. But the magnitude of this crisis goes far beyond what some voting can change, and certainly not on the timeline we need it
hes joking, no matter who you vote for corporate interests will prevail
Need corporate interests to align with climate interests then. Either make it expensive with regulations or for the free marketers create a high social cost to do the wrong thing. Seems to me the quickest way forward is to incentivize corporations to do the right thing whether that's from negative or positive incentives
When corporate interests see that it’s do the right thing or we all die. Maybe? Or am I just being a desperate optimist. Hard to sell something when there is literally no one left alive to buy it.
Natural gas looks a lot better than coal on paper, but the whole system is super leaky and a ton of methane gets released to the atmosphere. And methane is 21x more potent than CO2 when it comes to warming. Hope the administration can get out in front of this

the BIGGEST oof.
you've hit on one of my passion areas within climate/enviro work. NATURAL GAS IS FUCKING AWFUL. and there are faaaar too many people within the enviro realm who are like "bridgeway fuel tho" and it really makes my blood boil. utilities love to tout the term "natural" gas which makes it sound all nice n good, but it is climate wrecking.
methane is actually 80 to ONE HUNDRED times more potent than carbon dioxide. it also has a shorter half life, by a lot, so dealing with methane with the same level of urgency as we are with carbon dioxide is not only helpful -- it could literally be the difference maker in being able to avert the worst of the climate crisis.

i could go on about this all day lol
Yeah "Natural Gas" is marketed in the same vein as "Corn Pops" because it sounds healthier, but es no bueno.
Drives me crazy that most of the developed world isn't investing more in nuclear. Just seems like a no-brainer to me, meanwhile Germany is considering reopening their coal plants because they shut down their nuclear plants. Yeah, there's the issue of waste but I'm sure the human race could figure out a safe way to store it with the amount of money involved in the energy sector.

What do you think about nuclear?
i do not think we need to focus on retiring existing nuclear plants right now--obviously coal and "natural" gas are the priorities in terms of shutting that shit down. but i am not pro investing in NEW nuclear facilities. it is so so expensive, much more so than solar/wind, and the waste issue is real. no one has really come up with a true sustainable solution for how to deal with it, and we all know how toxic nuclear waste is

compared the renewables the economics of fission nuclear power don't work (including scalability, suitable location, regulatory issues, construction/engineering time and costs, etc). the cost per unit energy is just not competitive, especially with improving efficiency of solar and wind tech. it's not economically viable.

Finland’s nuclear waste repository should be functional next year.
IMO, it’s a bit disingenuous for environmentalists to say nuclear is bad because we haven’t “solved” nuclear waste storage, when the storage solution that was literally under construction and supposed to be operational 24 years ago was shutdown.
The reality is that solar / wind still require some sort of backup power generation to plug the supply vs demand gap. Batteries are great but will take decades to have enough capacity to replace all the peaker plants and also have significant trade offs because they require significant rare earth metals like cobalt and nickel. Until then, choose your peaker: nuclear, natural gas, coal
In my home state of MN, we are at the intersection of these trade offs. In order to built all the solar panels and batteries, we need rare earth metals. One of those potential RE mines is in northern MN in the boundary waters, one of the most beautiful and pristine wilderness areas in the US.
Great episode about the boundary waters and the Twin Metals mine:
Great video from Patagonia:
I’m all for solar, wind, batteries, etc. but we also need recognize that those options also have negative impacts. Do we destroy some of our last remaining wildernesses in the name of “climate change”? Seems counterproductive…
