dispatch being shut out is pretty surprising it had a lot of early buzz, Wes is typically looked at, cast are all big names, the movie was good, etc
Getting a total shut out was a little surprising I agree. This was Wes at his Wessiest though and it is technically an anthology film which wasn't working in its favor. But yeah not even something for production design was disappointing.
I am looking forward to how badly the ratings are and what they try to do to improve without realizing people now just read the results online instead of tuning into a 3 hour marathon of who has the best outfit.
These snubs remind me how much the Oscars are a joke. French Dispatch, Green Knight, Pig completely snubbed. Don’t have a big studio backing you? We don’t care about your film.
to be fair, Drive My Car just got 4 nominations almost solely because critics love that movie
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 5/14 - Neil Young & Crazy Horse @ Forest Hills 6/8 and maybe 6/9 - Governors Ball 8/17 - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard @ Forest Hills 9/4 - Pearl Jam @ MSG 9/7 - Pearl Jam @ Wells Fargo Center 9/11 - St. Vincent @ Brooklyn Paramount
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
lmao at people crying over spiderman not getting more love. you know what spiderman’s oscar is? getting $2 billion worldwide, thats your oscar.
I'm here for this post. I'm all for big popular films making the cut for BP, and they sometimes do every once in awhile (Titanic, LOTR, Avatar, Fury Road, Black Panther), but people need to stop treating No Way Home like it's a great movie. It was a really fun, expensive gimmick, and more people will realize that once the high of seeing Toby and Andrew on screen again wears off.
It's not like the Academy nominations are decided by 10 people sitting around a table saying "what films should we nominate to save our ratings and put us back in good faith with general audiences?" It's nearly 10,000 people casting their own ballot ranking their choices in preferential order. To make the cut, a film has to be in the number 1 slot for 5% of the ballots. It's probable that No Way Home made a lot of people's top 10, but not enough number 1s.
No Way Home is probably going to hit 2 billion. It's at 1.8 bil now and all without China. In a pandemic when everyone stopped going to the movies. That's a huge Win on its own. This year's nominations more or less show the Academy members themselves don't really care if people watch or not. Seth Rogen said it best how people don't need to care about the Oscars. No other industry cares if audiences watch them award themselves.
but I think a lot of that had to do w Ben being such a terror off camera, and after watching his character didn't seem mean enough on screen to warrant it being such an off screen story, idk feels like that was just rumor to drum up awards, or he just sucks
I don't really have a solid clue about what's getting nominated for the Indie Spirits tomorrow, which is exciting.
Kinda hoping for a C'mon C'mon screener though, so I can watch it when I'm not dead tired.
Finished C'mon C'mon and just...it's so good but it's so sad
Par for the course for Mike Mills movies. So of course I FUCKING LOVED IT
The most I cried at a movie in a long while, probably since A Ghost Story or Beautiful Boy. Thought it was an absolutely beautiful movie and felt like a free therapy session as well.
This is gonna be so lame. I mean even with them doing this in an attempt to cut down on time lost its still going to be over 3 hours. And how the fuck do you remove Original score? I mean the music you hear all night when somebody wins is done by a damn orchestra, lets downplay their importance a bit more why dont we.

This sucks and won’t even do anything to help the ratings.
I'll skip the TV stuff at this point simply because I don't have the time.
Cool. Curious what your choices will be.

Almost rolled a d3 for Best Pic between C'mon, The Novice and Zola. Can't stop thinking about any of those movies, but Mike Mills fuckin did it again.
And by "it," I mean "reached into my soul and put it on screen."
Hurt not to vote for my friends who kicked ass on Procession in Documentary, but Flee is just that fuckin good.
