Yeah CODA was a little too feel-goody for me to take seriously as a Best Picture contender. No problem that it won, probably better in the long-run than Power of the Dog. Really thought it was PTA's year in the beginning of the season prior to the blowback.
I do agree with Trevor about having to "do homework" to see the Oscar nominated films. I usually follow the festival circuit and awards tracking early so it's not as much of a task for me as the casual viewer, but the easiest thing the Academy could do to reel in more ratings is nominate films people actually saw beforehand.
Nobody watched that though. At least not until it hit streaming weeks after the nominations.
Yeah, but it's a four quadrant Spielberg movie. And it made 75M during a COVID spike when everyone knew it would be on streaming eventually anyway. Don't Look Up might not have recouped its insane talent budget if it had a theatrical release. Dune didn't exactly do gangbusters domestically either.
I think a good ten films to boost ratings would be a combo of the popular and the weird. If you take away all the campaigning and awards journalism,
Don't Look Up Dune Encanto The French Dispatch Luca No Time To Die Pig Spiderman: No Way Home Titane
I feel like that's a solid ten that would boost ratings a good 20% or more. Felt weird to nominate No Time to Die and Encanto for several awards but not even throw it a Best Pic nom.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
Alana Haim should have been nominated over Nicole Kidman, while we're at it. Being the Ricardos getting the nods it did was weird.
People drank the Sorkin Kool Aid cause he was making the movie and got big names. The Amazon documentary on Lucy and Desi was better. Hell, the Lucille Ball portrayal in Licorice Pizza for 5 minutes was way better than Kidman over 2 hours.
Will is trying to do some damage control but I doubt it matters now.
That's the stupidest thing I've ever read. It's inherently racist unless they're about to list all the sexual predators and dickwads who also will be banned?

Theyre ok with those predators because they didnt diddle a female on camera during their telecast.
