And now, gals...
This will be my first camping festival. Sleeping on the ground doesn't bother me. Not showering doesn't bother me. I've even gotten used to the idea of using port-o-potties all weekend. However, as I look over my calendar and do a little counting, I am getting a bit nervous about that mother (no pun intended) of all female inconveniences: the red tide, the crimson wave, the rag, Aunt Flo comin to visit, etc...
Those of you who attend fests on any regular basis must have had to deal with this at some point. Any advice would be much appreciated.
One of the girls I am going with thinks she will have the same problem. She is trying to get some birth control pills so that hopefully she will not have to deal with it. You may still be able to get some and start taking them with enough time for them to start working. If there is a planned parenthood near you it should be pretty easy to get some there. Good luck!
If you can't use the pill, there is a product out there called Instead, but you need to be pretty comfortable with your own body to use it. Basically, it's a cup that fits over the cervix and catches the waste. The great thing about it is that it only has to be changed once every 12 hours. I know it sounds strange, but once you have it placed properly, you can't even feel it.

That's right ladies, there's no topic I won't post on...
My wife ran into this situation last year and she was really worried about it.
In the end, it wound up being, at worst, a minor inconvenience for her. She had just made up a little bag that she threw into our show pack that had all her lady-business in it, along with those Dove or Lever wet wipes things for her hands, an extra roll of t.p. ('cause you never know) and ziploc a bunch of those Lysol wipes for the porta-john.
For the most part, the porta-johns were fairly clean (occasionally some were surprisingly clean), which helped her out a lot.
Bottom line: have no fear. You should be just fine.
I'll butt out now and let you gals get back to it...

some good advice from jay
bring a cute little pouch to carry your feminine necessities in inside your backback (so no one has to know). Carry some wet ones or baby wipes, some tampons or pads. So far I've been lucky enough not to have to deal with this personally at a big festival, but I don't anticipate it being that big a deal, just slightly inconvenient.
As far as the birth control idea, i wouldn't recommend it. I did that once for my sister's wedding. It's not terrible, but you are messing with your body and it's cycle and my doctor informed me that this is something you should do in extreme circumstances, such as your wedding or something.
I would consider Bonnaroo such an extreme circumstance, but that's just my "guy" perspective, I suppose. If you are really worried about it (hey, I know that women have wildly different experiences with the curse), go see your doctor and ask his/her advice.
I agree that its probably not that terrible once you are there, but I would be worried about sitting in line for 12 hours without a bathroom in site. Woodlines are great for peeing, but not for the necessary changes that need to be made. I guess I would deal and do what I had to do, but man I would not want to.

Perhaps, if you do it once. But if you do that every time you go to a fest like Bonnaroo, you are really throwing your body off course. Not cool. It's really not that big a deal to deal with lady times at Bonnaroo.

thanks for jumping on me pigz. I'm glad your so astute that you know whoever "cindy" is and you can read her mind (there was no mention made of the line waiting to get in).
My mistake in presuming, since the initial post talked about port-a-potties that the reference was to INSIDE the festival Iand my fault for presuming that most people who find their way to this board find their way in without a 20 hour wait in line).
If the wait in line is a problem -- it can also be solved with some pre-planning: tampon AND a pad.
wearing long skirts as opposed to jeans or even shorts make everything much easier to deal with in semi-public places -- from peeing to whatever.
I would be worried about sitting in line for 12 hours without a bathroom in site. Woodlines are great for peeing, but not for the necessary changes that need to be made.
Cindy, we'll be in an RV. If you came to our door and needed to use the facilities for lady reasons, we would totally understand (at least the girls would) and would welcome you in. Don't hesitate to ask a neighbor to use their RV while you're in line if you need to. The sheet idea isn't bad, but this is such a personal thing, a door and a few walls might be preferable.

Sorry. I thought you were referring to the quote above yours, which does mention waiting in line:

No mind reading required to get the jist of that message. That's why I put a smiley afterwards, to show my intent wasn't mean.
Perhaps after a while longer on the board you'll see most people do not post with bad intentions. If you still feel that way about mine, I apologise.
It's okay....if you have your period or (.) during the festival... be prepared bring the supplies that are needed and you won't even notice... The only thing that I would suggest is just making sure you keep clean and comfortable...
Yeah to being a WOMAN!!!!!! I'm going to have a glass of wine when I get home! ;D
I wanted to do it some time back but was a little nervous...
As my luck would have it... I'll be right along schedule with Bonnaroo...
I think I'm more worried about driving 19 hours.. in a Trooper, with three boys and myself- and hoping they all make it out alive
Hey.. bellakabey, I might just take you up on that offer... thanks for the idea about just asking people, as horrible as it is, I forget that most people would probably be really understanding.

just make sure to wear a long, loose skirt -- you get more privacy that way and uhm.. will find you can do more in less time than having to hassle with jeans or even shorts. makes having to take a walk to the edge of the road to pee that much easier (hint -- damnit -- I hate to have to post this here, but I learned it while watching peruvian women deal with things in the Andes - -including the one that almost peed on my foot on a roadside: panties get in the way when nature calls -- so remove them before you take your walk IF you can't get complete privacy -- that way your long skirt can act as a "screen" of sorts)
I swear I won't go into a port-a-potty in pants or shorts.
I am one of the few very, very lucky ladies that have ridden the crimson tide through not one, but two bonnaroos (and it's shaping up to be another red year for me! oh goodie!). Honestly, if you come prepared with three small items you will be a happy lady camper:
-tampons -toilet paper (enough for the whole weekend, there is rarely any in the porta potties) -hand sanitizer
Sometimes the frequent trips to the porta potties are annoying, but it really isn't the worst thing that could happen, and it most definitely should NOT destroy your lovely 'roo weekend! Bonnaroo is far to wonderful of a place to be ruined by Aunt Flo coming to visit.
Period time might not be a big deal to some of you, but it is for others of us. We're not all blessed with light or even medium-flow periods. I can go through an ultra tampon (the one above super-plus in absorbency) in ten minutes on my heaviest days. Hopefully, I'm in the clear, though. (And yes, I've been tested for everything. Thousands of dollars later, the consensus is: I just have heavy periods.)
Just wanted to add a note about the Diva cups, Insteads, etc: If you're planning on using this method, try it out before you go. I've had the worst time with cups and have given up on them for now. I'm very comfortable with my body, but just can't get the hang of them. If you're going to bring them but haven't used them before, bring your normal things for backup, just in case!

Lynaroo it is just the same for me. Tests and more tests and the same results - nothing wrong. Also, I just turned 40 so you would think it would be slacking off. I'll be cutting it close this year so I hope at least the worst is over. My first year I bled through everything I had with me and also onto my friends' brand new tie dye sheet. I, too, recommend longer loose skirts, the biggest tampons you can find, pads, lysol wipes (so you can take care of business in comfort if you need to sit), baby wipes, and lots of TP. Put it all in a gallon baggie and don't leave camp without it. Good luck, ladies of the Roo!
I have been using the DivaCup since having my daughter and I can't say enough good things about it. Yes, get used to it beforehand, but you can leave it in for 12 hours so you can schedule it to a time when you will be at camp, have all you need to clean up, etc.
Cracks me up every time I see a super ancient post come up. Glad to see that people search before posting!
Bumping this up for 2012. I had my period for part of last year, and it looks like this year will be the same. HOW MUCH DO I LOVE BEING A WOMAN?! Anyway, like the others said, it's not a huge deal. I already have my "biff baggies" packed up. Ziplocks with sectioned off TP (I put 6 sections that are enough for one use each), tampons, feminine wipes (Always and Summers Eve make them- check the tampon aisle), clorox wipes for inside the biff if needed, and hand sanitizer. The only time it can be an issue is during late night when the biffs inside centeroo are overflowing. Just wait for another one to open up if that happens.
And if you run out of supplies, don't be afraid to ask a stranger to help you out! I gave away a few bathroom baggies last year and I'll bring extras this year, too.
edit: I HIGHLY recommend a head lamp! It's such a pain trying to hold a flashlight, and the biffs will be DARK at night.

MADELINE I LOVE YOU FOR THIS BUMP ;D
I specifically went to the lady doc and said, lets ramp up this scrip so I can NOT be riding the crimson wave at Roo. She rocks so she accommodated me with additional BC.
I also just wanted to chime in on the rec of a headlamp. brilliant porto addition, just in general. Just dont look IN the toilet....

^ Mayo, this was my goal as well, but tricking Mother Nature is a risky business, lemme tell ya! I've experienced 4 out of 5 red Roos (the worst being the night of the Kanye debacle - OMG, cramping & miserable PLUS stuck in that hell crowd? Ugh!), I've figured out how to work the BC accordingly. Looks like this year will be close, but no bigs. Yay for pills that keep everything light & breezy! ;D
So girls: you know you've been in line & needed supplies before, right? If you have room in your bag, pack some extra stuff. You never know how much YOU can improve someone's entire 'Roo experience because your supplies meant they weren't miserable! Whether it's Midol or handi-wipes (and anything else!), SHARE 'CAUSE YOU CARE! That kind of karma always comes back to you!
*EDIT* PS - I *love* to walk down the row of portos & randomly gift the individual packets of fresh wipes to girls...oh, the joy that brings! Try it & see for yourself!

I actually just came on Inforoo specifically for the purpose of reminding all you ladies to check your calendars! I got lucky again this year, won't even have to stack pills. But if you are going to need to, make sure you can get your next pack of pills a week early - don't wait until the last minute to figure it out just in case there's some issue with insurance or something!
And if you can't avoid it, I too can't say enough good things about menstrual cups. Probably wouldn't recommend trying it out for the first time at Roo, but still worth mentioning just in general. I seriously forget that I'm on my period all the time. (If anyone has any questions about 'em or anything feel free to message me!)
