Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I have been using the DivaCup since having my daughter and I can't say enough good things about it. Yes, get used to it beforehand, but you can leave it in for 12 hours so you can schedule it to a time when you will be at camp, have all you need to clean up, etc.
Cracks me up every time I see a super ancient post come up. Glad to see that people search before posting!
Diva cup FTW. Do use it before roo to get the hang of it!

Starting my period while at a festival is my worst nightmare. As long as I'm at least to day 3 it's just a minor inconvenience. But if it's the first two days I'm completely miserable. Happened at All Good last year. Horrible cramps are made even worse by unrelenting heat. Infogooders from last year saw the condition I was in the first two days. It was not pretty. I've been fairly lucky that has only happened once in my 5 festival seasons. My cycles are so erratic I'll have no idea if I'm going to be good until a few days before a festival. It *should* be ok this year, but I'm always prepared just in case.
I agree with a earlier post in the thread about making changes in your tent if possible. Maneuvering in a porto can be enough of a challenge when trying to make as little contact with any part of the inside of the porto, adding a "change" can be downright stressful (am I alone in this?). I always have a stash of wipes, tampons, and plastic grocery bags in my suitcase in addition to the supplies I carry with me at all time. Even if I don't need them I always find someone in need at least once a festival.

We need to discuss this item... never heard of it until now...

^^This. Days 1 and 2 it's like my uterus is attempting escape from my body cavity, and because it can't get out it exacts revenge on me by staging a coup with all of my other internal organs.

^ You poor thing! I get maybe... MAYBE one slight cramp the day before. That's it. Done two days later. Oh yeah, it's payback for all those times in 7th grade when I was rushed to the ER in agony. PCOS sucks, but it does get better.
FYI: the downside to continuing w/extra pills instead of placebos: it can come with raging PMS of the bitchy, moody, give-me-chocolate-or-die variety. That's the only problem I've ever had w/this method.
oh. dear. lord.
I'm now regretting these posts since I'm friends with so many male mods. Enjoy all this TMI, guys! SMH...
gosh, reading all these posts makes me so happy that I donated my uterus to wherever it went when it was removed from my body...lol. I used to have a horrible time each month and it only got worse in my 40s. Not fair. I remember practically not being able to leave the house for a couple of days a month. I remember being on a camping trip once during the "masque of the red death" as I called it...it wasn't a festival, so I wasn't even on my feet all day in the sun...but still horrible. I feel for you all.
I had my 2 babies, though, so was glad to get rid of the oven as long as I got to keep the amusement park! lol.
Agreed...I get this unbearable leg pain the first couple days of my cycle. That plus 90° weather...thank god (or whoever) mines will be just going off. I would not be the best company.

.
Me too. And terrible achy legs. By day 3 though I can't even tell I'm on my period. I have pcos too, and in spite of those first days, I'm just so thankful to have a regular cycle again without the help of meds.

Just thought I'd add for anyone in Sarah's boat just learning about cups now - the Diva Cup is the longest of all the many brands available. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's a bit unfortunate that the most well-known brand in the US is the biggest of all - you don't want to go buy that one at random without putting some thought into it; it could very well end up being too big for you.

Just checked the calendar and looks like I could be on the path of one very miserable Roo. If I could get BC by Friday afternoon, will it do me any good or is it too late?
(On that note, any tips about the birth control you ladies personally prefer?)

That sucks! Going on BC right now could be rough, though - most people experience breakthrough bleeding at first, so there would be a pretty good chance you'd find yourself at least spotting for a while, maybe worse. I spotted through my entire first pack of pills. Plus a lot of people experience worse side effects at first - you could end up on an emotional roller coaster for a while until your hormones settle down a bit.
The other thing to keep in mind is the issue of when to start taking the pills - most people start on the first Sunday after their period; some people start on the first day of their period even though that means the days of the week won't line up correctly (although mine always come with stickers to re-label the pack if need be.) Neither of those options would really work for you right now, and starting them in the middle of the cycle increases the likelihood of breakthrough bleeding.
Sooo it's possible that starting 'em now would help, but it's also possible that it would make matters worse.
I resisted posting, but shall. Men - look away right now. So my biological father that i look way too much like to disclaim was tanked and stoned when he came for lunch that day. Mom wanted someone to love and who would love her. End of that story. = lots of physical um challenges, and the most loving mom in the world.
Forgive my spelling - its late and tired. Submyopic uterin fybroid. That is a MF that starts in the lining, breaks through in the uterus, grows to be a grape fruit, and makes your body think its pregnant with a non viable until its gone. = hemoriging every day for a year.
Have wayyyy too much experience here.
It is okay to control your timing with BCP's. If your doc says no, time to get a newer one. I went through living hell because i did not move on soon enough. New doc = miracle diagnosis, surgery, and finally relief. Too bad he did not take it out then. He felt i was too young and wanted to leave me the option. He gave me ten years... And 10 years later.. He saved me again for good. mixed blessing
It's okay to delay it for months as long as you are not trying for babes. Know your body and listen to it like Holls said. Younger - prob. no more than 3 months. I found that when i pushed it to 5, the body said FU, now. Please bare in mind I am an extreme case, puking, cant move, omg the pain type. But after many many docs, it is okay to fool mother nature quitea bit - especially if you are younger. Just be prepared for the month from hell when you give in.
Talk to your doc! If he or she is reluctant - get a new one. Its tough to change when it comes to such a personal, vulnerable issue.
For me, it saved my life. I almost died because of the hemoraging and and old trusted doc that wanted to give me bcp's for my issues after getting them from him for years. Guess that goes for all healthcare. Know your body. If the answer is not working, stay at it 'til you find someone who understands what you are saying.
XOXO to all those still suffering and yet capable. I envy the capable part.
My calendar puts me right in the middle of Bonny to start. Gonna have to invest in a Diva Cup! I've always wanted one anyways, so now I have a fantastic excuse... and I'm saving the environment while I use it.

It is too late to use BC to delay periods at this point. I asked last year before roo and my doctor said it wouldn't have been an issue except I needed to come in at least 2 months prior to Roo
Carmen, practice now! You might need to snip the end of the diva cup (the stick) if it's uncomfortable.

Don't know if this has already been mentioned but my doc. told me to take ibuprofen starting a few days before and it will make your flow lighter. And you have the added benefit of less cramping. It has always worked for me. You don't want to do this every time though as it is not good for your liver.
just got that over with thank god. I was worried about that too! Make sure you have sanitary wipes! The pills sound like a great idea...good luck, hopefully mother nature is kind!
Tmi time...mines came on Saturday & its still on (full stream). Sometimes I feel like IT knows the best times to come on to make me the most miserable!! Ha

Ladies I'm in for my third red Roo. Every single time I'm partying with my monthly. The optimist in me says "At least I don't have to worry about taking my bc every night all weekend".......I'm luckily not a heavy flow person, but other than a pain in the butt (ha, figuratively), it's not that big of a deal.
It's definitely manageable (for some of us) as long as you're properly prepared. I get mine the day we leave Ontario and it ends basically on the drive back
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.
Glad I found this thread, thought maybe others might appreciate some additional info, too, since we're a few weeks out now. Warning, this'll probably be more info on menstrual cups than you ever wanted.
I've been using a menstrual cup (the FleurCup, although I started with the DivaCup) for years now, and I echo the rec's for the cup over tampons/pads for longer-term "containment," since you need to change the cup only once every 4-12 hours depending on flow, as opposed to the like 4 hours max that you'll get from a tampon. Cups are RAD, because once you get the hang of them, you can set 'em and forget 'em and dance your face off without having to worry about leaks. I change my Fleurcup once every 12 hours except on my heaviest day, when I change once more in the middle of the day (fairly heavy flow due to Paragard). So I'm anticipating having a pretty awesome time despite the red tide, and you can too!
If your Roo's gonna be a red one and you're considering going the cup route, here are some useful links:
The Menstrual Cup LiveJournal community is probably the greatest and most vast resource for all things cup: menstrual-cups.livejournal.com/
One of the first things you want to figure out is your sizing, and therefore which cup is the best for you to get. This pretty much means determining how high or low your cervix sits, as this will affect the positioning of the cup in the vaginal canal. For more information on how to determine your size and to see an extensive size chart of the different cups, click here: sizecharts.livejournal.com/
As was mentioned previously in this thread, the DivaCup is the most widely available cup to get in the US (you can probably find it in most health food stores), but it's also pretty long and can be uncomfortable for that reason. If you do get the DivaCup and find that it's uncomfortable, I recommend first cutting down the stem. The instructions will say to only cut it down only so far, but I just lopped it off altogether, making sure not to cut the base of the cup itself, and was totally fine. But you should still have time to order most of the other types of cups online and fiddle with them to get the hang of insertion before Roo! Once I got the Fleur, I'd only go back to the Diva if I absolutely had to.
Folding methods are the trickiest things and cause most first-time users to get frustrated with the cup, so try a few different techniques to find the one that works best for you. This is an awesome pictorial guide to folding methods: menstrual-cups.livejournal.com/453392.html My go-to is the "origami" fold, since it creates a narrow point for insertion and pops open the easiest.
Plenty of folks have written about cleaning and things, and this year's FLUSHABLE TOILETS! should make things that much easier.
Anyway, I hope this was helpful for red roovians considering the cup! See y'all on the Farm!
When I ended up in the hospital needing a massive blood transfusion, after bleeding for a year straight, my doctor put me on the pill skipping the placebos so that I don't have periods. It took 3 units of blood to get my levels up to almost normal. I have been doing this for the last 7 years and couldn't be happier. I still struggle with anemia, but at least I can keep my blood counts at a level where it won't kill me.
