This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
Roo 16 worst selling year of all time. Bonnaroo books U2 in 17
Roo 22 worst selling year of all time. Bonnaroo books Eagles in 23
All checks out to me
Just based on reading between the lines, I legit do not know anything here, but I think Capps/Roo wanted U2 for a real long time. I remember a Grantland article specifically mentioning that U2 "didn't need to play Bonnaroo" to maintain relevance. I interpreted that as meaning they'd been a target by the time that article came out (it was 2014 or '15 iirc). That might have been a quote from someone, even.
I also got the sense that U2 did that entire Joshua Tree tour because they owed LN a stadium tour they could sell two million tickets to or whatever. And I think Roo got roped into that.
Again, all speculation. No one has told me anything.
Edit: here's the actual article's wording:
“It’s the experience of going to Bonnaroo that people like — it doesn’t really matter if Elton John or Hozier or Imagine Dragons is playing,” Pollstar’s Gary Bongiovanni told me. U2 is a rarity in that its brand is strong enough to sell tickets wherever it plays.
“They’re a global attraction,” Bongiovanni said. “They can play Estonia or eastern Australia, it doesn’t matter.”
So basically U2 were too big to play the carnival and then got taken down a peg by LN. Not sure how else to interpret that.
The eagles rule. I got tickets to see them for my 18th birthday and it was an incredible concert. That being said that was a while ago and I think they’d just be too old. But I think they are very overhated. Also if they were somehow able to have the same energy they did when I saw them then they would be a much better headliner than most people being tossed around as options.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

I've seen enough. The Eagles are an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1971. With five number-one singles and six number-one albums, six Grammy Awards and five American Music Awards, the Eagles were one of the most successful musical acts of the 1970s in North America.

100% Coldplay. i've talked to so many people who have seen them live and been like "ya know i don't really like coldplay but that show was incredible".
Coldplay does have a 2 week Roo sized gap in their tour in June. Granted, they are in Europe before and after but there is no other gap of that size during the European leg of their tour…

Top 5 of Coldplay - Odesza - SZA - Paramore - MMJ - Griz could do really well.

This is truly becoming one of the most entertaining headliner seasons yet for Bonnaroo. The Eagles lol...on what planet does that sound like a good booking?
