If Florence headlined would that be their first female headliner?
technically not. their first in a while but they had Lorde fall ‘14, Alabama Shakes fall ‘15, Sia and Robyn in 2016. None since
ooh i didn't know they had two editions in 2014, interesting! glad that they've had females at least, better than most usa fests (esp given that they had female headliners as early as 2014)
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Pearl Jam - Florence + The Machine
Aerosmith - The Cure - Gorillaz
Which of these looks best to yall
None of the above, to all of the above.
Aerosmith are almost certainly calling it quits, as far as touring, after this year's Fenway show. Apparently, between internal band conflict and health issues, it'll be a miracle if they make it through this year.
RCHP will have played Fenway only eight months prior to next year's Boston Calling, making it a less appealing booking than it was for 2020.
Gorillaz? Not even Damon Albarn's biggest band, and his biggest band isn't really that big. The sweet spot for festival headliners are acts that have a large casual audience who'd be curious to see them, in addition to diehard fans. If neither your grandmother nor your kid cousin can name a single song by an artist, they're probably not a great festival headliner. I pay a lot of attention to music, and even I can't name a Gorillaz song. I do know they do something with cartoons, though, right?
I'd expect RATM in the lineup, since they've pushed some of their dates back to next year, unless the festival wants to turn the heavy down a notch or two.
The Cure have a new album coming out soon, so next year is possible, unless they focus upon a summer-winter headlining tour and play Boston sooner. Same with Florence. Personally, I'd be happy with The Cure & Florence in the top line. Put Green Day with them, and that's a really nice top line, especially for people like me who prefer melody-driven rock and roll to thunder and crunch. You could also go with Billie Eilish, Phoebe Bridgers, or Olivia Rodrigo as the third headliner with those two, and it's both different enough to draw more fans, but similar enough to make people happy with the top line across the board. You can't go wrong with Pearl Jam, of course.
But...2023 seems like the year when we're going to get an unexpected reunion or two, whether motivated by art, cash, or Peggy Gallagher. I would bet money that one of three out of R.E.M., Oasis, or The Smiths will reunite for festival dates next year and it's a given that if any of those three reunite, Boston Calling will do everything within its power to book them. (I think that The Smiths are the least likely of the three to reunite.)
You could also get someone who hasn't toured in ages back on the road for one last go-around. Peter Gabriel would be a great headliner.

When Boston Calling first started and it was at city hall, they actually did two editions for several years. It was kind of awesome. I think the idea was that the fall edition was welcoming the students back to Boston, and the spring edition was sending them off. Boston Calling used to be great and I miss those early editions all the time.

i doubt Harvard lets them use the fields for a Labor Day fest, but it certainly would be nice

I've said it before, but if Harvard wanted to, they could make sure that all of their in-season teams are on the road that weekend, and since Boston Calling doesn't use the entire athletic grounds, other portions of the grounds could be used for practices earlier in the week.
If so many large arenas manage to juggle the NBA, NHL, LiveNation, AEG, WWE, and Disney On Ice without problems, there's no reason why a single Ivy League university couldn't say to the scheduling bodies for college sports, "make sure we're on the road for one weekend."

We can always get Alanis Morissette, a Canadian-born singer from San Francisco, California and she’s originally from Ottawa, Ontario Canada and she now lives in San Francisco with her husband Souleye and her three kids.
