Coming to Coachella for the first time. Not camping. What are the best options for flying into the area? Rental car not off the table as I need one for after the festival. Thanks!

Palm Springs is the closest, usually pretty pricey but they had some deals this year.
LAX is the most common choice, generally cheapest. Coachella has a shuttle service to the fest from there. Drive out is 3ish hours, traffic is hell though so could be much more.
San Diego is a similar distance as LAX but easier drive traffic wise, lots of people here prefer that.
Ontario airport is only about 1.5 hours away and avoids a lot of the LA traffic, but depending on where you’re coming from flight options might be limited.
John Wayne is about 2 hours but also easier traffic wise

I've always flown into LAX, rented a car from there and drove to Indio. I think it's about a 2 hour drive? It's always significantly cheaper to fly into LAX than any of the other So Cal airports from STL. Personally I've never hit bad traffic coming out of LA. We usually leave LA around 10AM-11AM.
Burbank is the hidden gem. You avoid the LAX mess and if you land early enough youll miss the traffic heading east and not deal with having to go through the heart of LA.
Listed from closest to farthest: Palm Springs: Closest by a big margin, only 30 minutes to your destination in Indio. But typically most expensive.
Ontario: Overall best value imo! A 60-90 minute(depending on traffic) shorter drive than LAX, and not as expensive as Palm Springs
John Wayne(Orange County): The 91 can get trafficy depending on time of day, but if you start driving during a window of little to no traffic, it's a smooth ride. Maybe a slightly longer drive than Ontario.
Long Beach: Underrated option if your city flies direct here. You cut out about 30 minutes of driving compared to LAX, and there's no hassle at all getting in and out which is a big time saver on top of the drive (especially planning your return drive time). It's easily the least crowded airport of the bunch.
LAX: Likely going to be the cheapest option, but probably the most time consuming as far as getting in and out goes. Sometimes you're lucky and it's actually smooth and quick. Just depends on the time of day. Pro tip: If you're going to LAX to fly back home, drive in the Arrivals lane and not the Departers lane, WAY faster. All you gotta do is go inside and take the elevator to get to Departures.
Burbank: It's an option if you can find a good deal. Probs same distance as LAX but less hassle getting in and out.
San Diego: Most miles but less hectic than LAX. Depending on the time of day you may get bad traffic on the 215 until you get to the 60. But this drive has the best scenics, so if you don't mind a longer drive, go for it!

if you're taking the 215 and 60 from San Diego you're going the wrong way and adding over an hour (or 2) to the drive. Take the 79s to the 371 to the 74 instead.

It's pretty much the same ETA give or take a few minutes, but you're right you could take the way to the 74 too with probably less traffic mid day!
I'm used to taking that way because I have people around Riverside that I pass by lol
lol im also connecting Denver > PSP, you doing united?
yup. Flying in on the Wednesday before. You? (EDIT: week 1)

yeah, according to maps I guess, but the 15 north in Temecula is a parking lot from 3pm until 7pm just about every day. I'm so happy I don't have to sit in that traffic everyday anymore.

anyone have an idea on how much time you need to do justice to Joshua? Contemplating doing that Thursday too but my group doesn’t land until 11 local.

Sheesh everyday? When I used to live near Riverside it was always the worst sitting in that traffic, if I tried to go to a show in San Diego after work or something. I couldn't imagine that being a daily commute lol.

No one's mentioned Phoenix but that's also an option and I personally love the Arizona scenery. It was the best option I found when I was booking 2020 as flights were about the same as LAX. The drive is about one hour longer but there's much less risk of being in bumper to bumper I would think.
