having a real hard time with the clashfinder for monday. anyone have any thoughts on who the stage closers are? I don't know how big some of these artists are
Main: Testpilot I'd imagine. Pyramid: Hawtin? Loco Dice? Nina? Underground: DJ Stingray? Dax J? Red Bull: Four Tet probably? But maybe Jamie XX? Could even be Goldie b2b LTJ Bukem? Stargate: I think this will be the techhouse stage of the day. Chris Lake is a big deal right? probably the closer? or maybe loco dice closes this stage with chris lake before?
everyone seems excited about Matador but I haven no idea who that is so maybe Matador is a stage closer.
any thoughts anyone could provide would be appreciated.
i did my best with Monday, lots of guesswork there, it's the most confusing day to put together. although it's not like i'm uber confident in the other days. the only things i'm kind of confident in is a dirtybird stage saturday and a drumcode stage sunday. monday stargate will probably be that techhousey edm-adjacent stage again.
edit: no matter how you slice the schedule there will be conflicts. i'm betting i'll do a lot of set splitting. though it was really nice staying at pyramid pretty much all day last year's monday, i'd like to have at least one "chill at one stage all day" day again.

someone on facebook thought the names on the right of the lineup were only locals and was wondering why Rebuke was on there.
another guy on reddit was not happy with the artists they booked for the underground, he thought the names on the right were the artists playing the underground stage.
where the hell do people come up with these ideas.

Shit if Hopkins is closing red bull that fucks up my red bull dirty bird stage. Maybe main stage is dirtybird and pyramid is where underworld will be? So von stroke is the main stage headliner?
Fuck does that mean a Hopkins and an Underworld conflict?
Unfortunately yes.
Underworld has to be on main stage right? Because if that's the case Claude Von Stroke will be on pyramid and that will be a shit show. Unless they shift Detroit Love from Stargate to Pyramid and put the dirtybird acts on Stargate.
saturday: i was reminded hawtin closed main in 2017, then pyramid last year, so i guess it's not totally crazy for claude von stroke to close pyramid. it will be really crowded, but so was hawtin last year. the plus side is main stage looks a lot more interesting now. no change to underground, the artists there feel appropriate to me, although i'm unsure of the order. red bull starts too early, likely some acts between red bull and detroit love @ stargate will switch.
sunday: no change
monday: basically just moved goldie to red bull closer and pushed four tet/jamie xx back. jamie xx > four tet > goldie b2b LTJ bukem feels to crazy to be real. underground feels right, stargate feels right, but any of those main stage/red bull/pyramid undercard artists could switch around.
Is there anything in particular a noob should know about the fest?
there is lots of stuff in this thread but i don't expect you to read through 40+ pages. so here are a bunch of random tips.
but TLDR; wear earplugs, check weather day before you leave for clothing, sound is good and the festival is easy to navigate.
1. Accommodations - downtown is ideal since you can walk to the festival. you won't be able to walk to most afters but most are a short uber ride from downtown. hotels in dearborn are cheaper and quieter but check what you'll be paying in ubers each day to and from the festival, they could eat into your savings. another nice thing about staying close to the festival is they allow reentry, so you can leave for a hour during the day to go to your hotel room to take a shit or whatever.
2. Sound - generally sound is very good, and generally it is very loud. The sound at Underground can be a bit of a mess but it's gotten better every year I've been. I hope you would plan on bringing earplugs anyway, but at Movement you really want earplugs.
3. Stages and festival layout - the festival grounds are small, very easy to hop between stages and multiple paths between them. No real choke points anywhere, traffic flows pretty good.
Movement/Main Stage: big amphitheater stage. Will get crowded for headliners, consider posting up a little before the headliner starts if you want a good spot. But you can typically squirm your way into a decent positon.
Pyramid: This stage is on the river. It's probably not big enough for the level of act that performs on it, but even if it's packed you can typically get a decent spot off to the side where the sound is great if not the view. Stage was really really loud last year.
Underground: Stage is literally underground, typically this is where they schedule the harder/darker techno acts. Can also be extremely loud, though it was a tough quieter last year. It's a concrete box so sound can change dramatically but just shuffling yourself a few feet to one side. It's also hot as hell, a real sweatbox, but it's a unique and very cool stage.
Red Bull: my personal least favorite stage, but i can't really say why. there is some grass here, all other stages are on concrete. pretty easy to get a decent spot but the grass starts to slope downward as you get back, so you are looking "up" at the stage.
Stargate: nice long dancefloor in front of this, so it's easy to get a good spot. sound is always good. typically this stage will be "detroit love" (carl craig) on saturday with carl craig closing, and "origins" (kevin saunderson) with kevin saunderson closing on sunday, with monday being whatever. so a lot of local talent on this stage but not always locals. if you can fit in some of the carl craig set do it, it's always a party over there.
4. Weather - historically weather can be all over the place, but typically it's warm to hot. think jeans or even shorts and a t-shirt. rain is not unusual, they've temporarily evacuated the grounds on two of the days i've been. so they kick you out and then announce on social media when the grounds are reopened. so things can be crowded getting back in, but they do a pretty good job of moving the lines along.
5. after parties - if you are interested in after parties save this RA link and check it occasionally over the next few months (but i'm sure we'll be posting interesting after lineups in this thread as well). there are recurring parties that typically have cool lineups: no way back, smartbar, tresor, eden, where are my keys, house of efunk, whatever the interface scene equivalent is now, etc. you can back the date up at the above link to 2019 to see all the parties from last year.
that's a few things, if you have any more specific questions let me know.

Yes, is movement paying you? Because they should lol
See some of Underworld til they play Born Slippy, then go see Jon Hopkins.
They close with born slippy usually so that's not gonna work, pending the official settimes. Underworld is the move hands down. Hopkins will come back. Or if underworld announces a date near you, see them there.

MVP here. Followed a lot of your advice last year and it was all true. Just to add if you are seeing Richie Hawtin bring earplugs...loudest set I've seen but totally brutally fun.
Agree on all points. Layouts great. You catch most acts easily. Although pryamid I felt got a bit clustered fucked towards closing...again...hawtin. hopefully a bigger stage for him I didn't find vip worth it last year. Maybe they fix it. Beer and booze wise if you want just beer there were pop up tables here and there and way quicker than bars.
After parties are a must and I regret not going to any. It's a marathon not a race. My mistake was underestimating how hard id go at the fest.
There is zero worry about letting loose. Everyone is mature , veterans and very little kids doing drugs and booze for the first time. Average age is must higher. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Doing what you do openly is normal. Don't think I saw one medic all weekend.
Ive said this before....Ive been to a lot , Coachella , Primavera , festivals in Canada etc...etc... Ive always been into more radiohead , NIN , Bjork type music and my friends dragged me last year....orbital was enough to entice me. Now I listen to nothing but shit from this festival

good point about pyramid. if they don't alter the layout from last year, if you are standing to the left of the floor when facing the stage during a big act, you likely will have a difficult time leaving. i'm hoping they open up some sort of pathway on that side so you don't have to climb over the pyramid to get out.
and i forgot to mention the crowd, which you covered well. YDM the crowd is generally mature, skews a bit older than other festivals. you'll see some families during the day. people are certainly partying but i rarely see people really super wasted or in trouble. they are there i'm sure but you i haven't seen them as much as other festivals. the techno uniform is black t-shirt, so wear black if you want to blend in. you'll see some electric forest looking kids and a few day glo type ravers as well, but most people stick with black.
there are some characters i see every year, notably Grandma Techno who is a bit of a Movement celebrity, you'll see her riding around on her scooter taking photos and she is as sweet as she can be (the festival as designated zones at each stage just for her). and there is a guy who looks just like Carl Cox who wears a shirt that says "I am not Carl Cox". you be the judge. i've seen pineapple guy there multiple years i'm pretty sure, and if you see a wookish looking dude with a goat don't panic he's real and so is the goat.

Good point. Ugh, I just LOVE Jon Hopkins and would love to see him play live again. No idea why they'd schedule him against Underworld.

I legit played soccer with an argentian friend and a 8 yr kid while his mom watched at the underground stage. It was the funniest experience but awesome Then met Lana Wachowski after
The one dude I kept seeing was at the pryamid , probably about 45/46 yrs old and didn't stop moving from the opening till finish. Got everyone around him going .
Sad to see Briggs closed. Chill gay bar right near the venue that was always easy to go to for a drink and some decent parties upstairs

Thank you so much! The only specific question I have is if there’s a particular time I should get my ticket by? I’m waiting to see how some things shake out before I decide on this or Lightning in a Bottle.
And funny you should mention the uniform, I’ve somewhat recently adopted it since getting into the Nola underground tech-house scene. Such a sharp look.
