This is insane - Portland is one of my most favorite cities. The combo of city-and-nature-accessibility, the public services, the public transportation, the progressive advocacy, the music and art scene, the queer community...These are all SIGNIFICANTLY better than most of the other cities.
Richmond would probably be voted out before Charlotte.
As it should. We had/have the 3rd highest death rate in country. Looking for #1 next year. It’s beyond racist. It’s gentrified. It’s truly a shit-hole but it’s my shit-hole and I love it so.
Virginia Beach is the biggest city in VA? Never been. How is it ?
It’s fine. Lots of hotels along the beach and then some residential areas. Beach itself is pretty nice. We were talking about the relative star power of MN musicians yesterday but Missy, Timbaland, the Neptunes, and Clipse is an insanely talented group of people to come from such a relatively small place
Portland does kinda suck. I enjoyed my visit but I'm so glad I don't live there. My cousin who moved there for work is trying desperately to get out. He's a nurse.
My sister and brother in law went and said it was a really dirty city.
You are truly the premiere source for secondhand anecdotes about every city on the list.

I lived in Richmond, VA the summer of 1996. I remember there being a really huge debate because some people wanted to put a statue of Arthur Ashe on Monument Avenue, and all these people who were TOTALLY NOT RACIST BUT were fighting against it because all the other monuments on Monument Avenue were Confederate military officers and they didn’t want to sully that.

I mean, the James Marion Sims statue was only removed in 2018 from Central Park. Just saaaaayin.

I hear you, and would never claim there’s not racism in NYC, systemically or otherwise. I’m just saying it’s kind of worse in the former capital of the Confederacy. Then again, that was nearly 26 years ago, so I’m sure plenty has changed.

My brother has lived in Richmond for the last 8 years. My last two years of college I spent a lot of time in RVA/Charlottesville with him being in Richmond and one of my closest friends attending UVA. Now I just make a yearly visit to Richmond.
Richmond and Asheville give off similar vibes in my opinion. Both have really good live music scenes and great brewery/food options. ZZQ is better barbecue than anything I’ve had in NC. Brother moved into Scotts Addition right before it popped off, so it’s nice when visiting to be within walking distance to everything it has to offer.
One knock I hear often on Richmond besides the death/crime rate is the downtown area being lackluster. Seems like most people either go out in Carytown/Scotts Addition/The Fan.

Seems like that, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Newport News are all right there next to each other. Is it referred to as like the Quad city area?
Truth be told, I think it’s Hampton Roads that’s the largest but that whole area you mentioned is lumped together.
I’m joking about Virginia btw, guys. At best RVA is a low secondary/high third market. Absolutely understand why it’s not on the list.
Hampton Roads refers to the entirety of that region/cluster of cities. I spent a couple months there in 2019. It was alright. Nothing remarkable, really.
