I've mostly not participated a whole lot (at least not seriously) in this poll. I enjoyed some of these games when I was younger, but I no longer have the time to invest in some of the more immersive (and really fun) games a la Zelda, Final Fantasy, etc. Mario, however, I have been able to enjoy at every stage of my life, from kid to teen to lazy college student to dedicated college student to childless adult to busy dad. I now enjoy kicking my kids' asses at Mario Kart and challenging my wife to Mario Party on occasion after they go to bed. Mario has always been there for me, and for that, he is my pick.
Nothing beats exploring the worlds in Zelda. The stories for each game along with the great music that top themselves every release just put it above Mario for me.
If we aren't counting Smash bros as Mario, then it's no contest. I put 200 hours of my life into Breath of the Wild +DLC and would/probably will do it again. Sequel coming soon, end of this year or next.

Look, Mario shaped my childhood. I've sank far more time into Mario games than Zelda. Both Mario Kart and the mainline platform games are as strong as they've ever been. Look outside that, though, and you'll also see how much garbage Mario has been in too. The RPG's and the sports titles have gone pretty downhill. Mario Party, while hilarious random bullshit, is still just random bullshit.
Zelda, meanwhile, only has one bum game in my mind and that's Skyward Sword. The series responded to that mixed reception by overhauling itself for the better, and we're still gonna be taking about Breath of the Wild influencing stuff 20 years from now. Even Zelda's spin-offs (Four Swords, Hyrule Warriors) are generally of higher quality than Mario's.
Voting Zelda, but can't be mad if the plumber takes it.

yeah even with TTYD being my fave game of all time, sticker star and beyond is horrendous. gotta take into account the quality of the series as a whole

Such a beautiful game and so much fun to play. I have spent way too many hours just exploring without even trying to finish the game. I really need to get back on that. LOL I just enjoy the whole game so so much.
Skyward Sword isn't really a bum game. The motion controlled gameplay is a weak point which brings it down quite a few notches compared to other Zeldas, but as an origin story for the entire Zelda lore it is a beautiful game and the Skyward Sword theme is one of the best songs in the entire franchise. The HD remake for switch looks gorgeous as well.
Everyone saying Zelda is trying to be a contrarian, Mario is head and shoulders above. Smash, super Mario sunshine, Mario cart, Mario party, Mario 64, and I could keep going. There’s simply no contest

As someone else stated above, part of the joy about Zelda is exploring the world, and Skyward Sword didn't really let you do that. It was a series of linear non-interconnected areas that the game made you repeatedly revisit. There are definitely things to love about Skyward Sword (the lore, the characters, some cool dungeon ideas) but it felt too much like going from point A to point B.
I’ve been playing Zelda since 1986 and Mario since 1985…. showing my age. Both have transitioned beautifully from one console to the next and continue to evolve with technology and the times.
Zelda has shaped me more than any other video game franchise, so it gets my vote for that personal reason. I consider it a key reason I am able to better problem-solve and think outside of the box… and I would even say it played a small role in why I ended up in my current career path of Computer Science.
