after i've really sat with it since Sunday. A lot of Frank's performance was dope. The White Ferrari remix, the Born Slippy x Lost remix, performed two unreleased songs, performed at your best ... a lot of the things he did were awesome.

Ive said it before and Ill say it again; as an avid frank fan, my entire group was shocked to see the reactions the next morning. I too was dissapointed he didnt actually play nights/nikes, and I can absolutely understand how to non-frank fans, an hour of waiting with zero counter programming was absolutely outrageous. That being said, I genuinely dont think he "scammed" coachella or really even performed poorly. It just wasnt up to headliner standard and, with 3 years of coachella-goers hyping it up, the result was so obviously undercooked that it was just too easy to dogpile on him.
Coachella made the right move giving him the boot, wether that was their decision or not I guess. All that being said I quacking loved the show, the videography, and his decision to give these songs new renditions seemingly on the fly. That white ferrari mix, self control and Godspeed are going directly into my phone downloads.

I can't believe I read that he brought out a kid to sing a song about his "Inner Child" while a sign on the screen said "Inner Child" and at the end of the performance he said "Yeah, that's just a song about my inner child"
I've been a huge Frank proponent for a long time, but that stuff has me scratching my head on if the genius stuff is overblown

Genius stuff is almost always overblown tbh. Nobody’s perfect.

ha yes i even said to my wife 'like yeah bro, we know' during Inner Child. Genius stuff is very overblown, especially with his dedicated fanbase.

I’m not mad people enjoyed the set but if that’s the quality he will be touring with when he returns and not like his FYF set then I feel content saving money and will have zero FOMO if he ever brings that show to crypto arena
He was almost an hour late and then preceded to play a mailed in half assed set. It was pretty clear he didn't want to be there so I think the dog pile is justified.

I think the most upsetting thing about Frank is it seems he had a fantastic show planned but had a temper tantrum and decided to chuck it all . If he sat there and sang with the ice skaters going nobody would have known it was supposed to be different. Just makes 0 sense
Maybe it's just my mind wanting to preserve good memories and forget the bad ones but as time goes by, I find myself remembering the highs of his set much more than the lows. It was certainly one of the weirdest sets I've been to, and of course it had more than a few flaws, but I danced and cried and got to hear new versions of some of my favorite songs. Call it copium or whatever but I much prefer to have positive reflections on the times I've had than negative ones, even if they're more objective. Positive bias can be good for your mental health, folks. Certainly not going to ever go a festival just for him again though.

Was listening to a recent episode of the Deuxmoi podcast, so I’ll do a quick rundown of what was said. Frank was getting paid $4 million each weekend. The face makeup took hours to put on and take off, which in part upset the skaters. There was some sort of tunnel/trap door under the ice rink to transport the skaters. His management company had to beg him to perform.
11/19: Caribou 11/22: Ranger Trucco 11/29: Armand Van Helden* 1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol
everybody at weekend two is wandering into the grounds very soon to buy the most overpriced beers on earth and have a good time can you all Please talk about anything else now

Genuinely think the reaction wouldn't have been as bad if he sang Nights/Nikes/Chanel instead of just playing them out.
But after starting so late and getting cut short by curfew, so much of the set feels like it was just to buy time and if he intended to make a performance art piece, how are we supposed to "get it" if we didn't see it come to its proper conclusion?
The individual songs (particularly Godspeed, Bad Religion, White Ferrari for me) were amazing. Watching clips of those parts now I can understand why people who didn't go and have just seen the videos think it was incredible. But actually being there and dealing with the lateness, the unbearably long gaps between songs, the DJ set, and the lip-syncing was so painful and frustrating. It made it impossible to really get into the performance.
Yeah the Frank set was great in parts. The dj set would've been fine if he actually played all of his songs still after. But adding up all the issues with it + being cut short was just sour. There was so much potential there.

This is exactly how I felt. There was absolutely no momentum in the show and that's such an underrated aspect of live shows. It's the difference between a local indie band in someone's basement and a touring band in a sold out club.
Frank Ocean’s decision to cancel his second of two performances at Coachella this weekend will likely cost the festival several million dollars, sources tell Billboard — losses that the festival will try to offset, in part, with finding new uses for the giant ice pad the company created for Ocean’s long-awaited performance.
A source close to the situation tells Billboard that festival promoter Goldenvoice is trying to make the best out of the millions of dollars spent on building a giant ice pad that was supposed to accommodate over 100 skaters during Ocean’s set last Sunday night but was scrapped at the last minute after the artist suffered an ankle injury. The ice pad cannot be used as a public ice rink, the source says, but the Goldenvoice team is working out how to incorporate it into another yet-to-be determined performance.
Ocean was to be paid $4 million for each of his two Coachella performances, for a total of $8 million, sources say. Since Ocean is not performing for the second weekend, he will only be paid for the first weekend’s performance. Goldenvoice, however, will still need to pay Blink-182 that same $4 million rate for their replacement one-hour headlining set on Sunday, sources say, and will also need to pay the newly announced Skrillex, Four Tet and Fred again.. combo for their closing set.
Now that I've had time to reflect and fully appreciate the groundbreaking genius, I really think that Frank's show was the greatest live music performance of the 21st century. And it's not even close.
He rewrote all the rules of what a "concert" should be and delivered something so special and so unique that today's dullards won't be able to comprehend how great it was for several more centuries.
I can certainly understand how those with a limited intellect and closed mind might think it was "terrible" or "mailed in" or "intended to do the bare minimum in order to fulfill a contractual obligation," but that reflects more on the dummies than it does on Frank.
So in addition to paying him 4 million per weekend Goldenvoice had to pay for the rink? I thought things like that would come out of the artists booking fee?
Gonna book the ice rink like the Despacio, but instead of Soulwax and James Murphy playing music it's Scott Hamilton doing backflips and Brian Boitano showing out.

Looks like the cost exceeded his booking fee.
Typically, festival promoters pay an artist a performance rate and also cover basic production needs such as staging, sound, lighting and video boards. The artists will cover all additional production elements from their fee that are unique to their performance such as musicians, dancers, performers and other major visual elements.
In Ocean’s case, however, the most expensive part of his production — the custom ice pad— was built by Goldenvoice and came with significant energy costs. So, while Goldenvoice had planned to recoup that cost from his performance fees, sources say the production costs Ocean racked up exceed the $4 million he earned for the first weekend. That means Ocean failed to turn a profit from his Coachella appearance and that the festival will have to eat the remaining loss — for which it is highly unlikely to demand repayment.
Ahhhh it feels so good to be back in the fields. The layout is absolutely beautiful this year, the grass is still green-ish, and the breeze is phenomenal today. Yuma AC is currently slappin'
