Marshfield is one of the few towns in eastern Massachusetts without a commuter rail station, which makes it a particularly bad location for a festival. Especially with the large student population, the immediate Boston area is a lot like NYC, Chicago, and San Francisco in the sense that there's a huge number of people who don't drive/own cars. Sadly, every other New England festival is in a location that's either particularly difficult to get to without a car, has limited reasonably-priced hotel accommodations, or both. It's easier to get to midtown Manhattan from Boston than it is to get to Marshfield, Martha's Vineyard, North Adams, or Newport.
Props to the defunct Life Is Good festival at Prouse Farm in Canton, MA for running shuttle buses on a loop between the grounds and the nearest commuter rail stop. I saw Daryl Hall and John Oates, The Roots, Dawes, and Trampled By Turtles at their last edition there in 2013. I didn't know who Lake Street Dive was back then and missed their earlier set. Had I known, I would have been there. (Those five artists would make for a better daily lineup than anything Boston Calling has presented in a long time.)
oof, if BC does end up dying I hope Founders or AEG/Goldenvoice puts something in its place. I’m sure the Metallica day did insanely well but it was pretty damn empty friday and sat, especially sat night after the rainstorm. hard to imagine they profited or even broke even from only one day of the fest doing well
But was it really that empty on Friday? I wasn't able to make it from Blue at the end of Oliver Tree's set to the food vendor area, buy a sandwich as one of the lesser-known vendors with a relatively shorter line, and make it back in time for the start of Avril Lavigne. It wasn't insanely packed on Friday, but the food lines are always the poker tell as to how crowded it is.
But I do agree with you that another festival promoter would likely step in here if MSG/Boston Calling bows out. However, they likely wouldn't put those wheels in motion until it's crystal clear that Boston Calling isn't happening in 2023, which would mean that that festival wouldn't kick off until 2024.
(I'm leaning very strongly to moving to a smaller city in 2024, maybe my hometown of Rochester, NY, to make my retirement assets go a lot further than they would in Boston when I retire in 5 or 6 years. I definitely want to get in as much live music in as I can in the next two years, because wherever I move, there's going to be a lot less happening, especially without a car.)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I checked the Boston Calling website and there's no "See you in 2023" message or listed dates, and I can't recall any social posts indicating that they'll be back. Haven't they always had some messaging like this on their site in the past?
This doesn't necessarily mean that any decision has been made to pull the plug, only that they may be thinking about that, or things like changing the dates or location may be under consideration.
Twenty years ago, as the fixed location annual festival trend started ramping up, if someone had asked me which of Boston, Atlanta, and Austin would eventually have the fewest number of in-town festivals, I wouldn't have guessed Boston.
This is what just went down in Des Moines, IA. We may not even have something on this level next year. www.80-35.com/
(Sure, most everybody will come to town and do their own headlining show, at an average cost of $50 after service charges and with the privilege of sucking up all of the COVID-19 that you'd like at no additional cost.)
Just doublechecked their Instagram and Twitter feeds and there weren't any "See you next year" posts.
Boston Calling is coming back! just checked their aite out of curiosity and the dates are May 26-28. was honestly so worried due to the lack see you next year posts. wonder if this was quietly done recently

Rage Against the Machine - Arctic Monkeys - Odesza
Odesza isn't a headliner at the Harvard grounds. They closed Red before Tame Impala in 2019.
The top line is going to be Foo Fighters * Rage Against The Machine * The Strokes.
That, or three nights of Nine Inch Nails.
I really wish that they'd drop this whole thing of bringing back the headliners who never took the stage for one reason or another and book whomever they feel will be the best draw.
Dr. Frankenstein could reanimate John Lennon and George Harrison, and the reunited Beatles would be the biggest draw on the festival circuit next year, but Boston Calling would still stick with whomever they booked to headline in 2020 and/or 2022 and didn't actually get to perform.

I count two potential headliners and seven potential Red/Blue closers, and a few acts who might be much further down the poster. Public Enemy might be in a spot comparable to Cheap Trick, if they did Boston Calling.

on this tour odesza is playing and selling out arenas and great woods size venues, not to mention the production is main stage level. i was originally an odesza is a headliner denier but i think theyre headliner or bust at this point. perhaps they just dont get booked though because of the trend in booking rawk headliners. more likely we get someone like Flume, Disclosure, Jamie xx as an electronic sub

It seems like they always book at least one EDM act as a Red or Blue closer. I do question the wisdom of booking only one (non-headlining) artist in a genre. You'd need at least two or three on one day to make that day's lineup appealing to people who like that genre. I'd like to see Tennis at that new festival in Quincy in a few weeks, but I refuse to buy a festival pass for one (non-headlining) artist.
If you're going to book an EDM closer on Blue or Red for one of the three days, find another EDM artist a step down in popularity who can perform right before them.

Is this the kind of festival you can walk to from your hotel or more of a hotel/train/walk sort of deal? Always wanted to visit and seems like a good opportunity for some history tours in the morning and some music in the afternoon/evening.

if you stay somewhere near the red line you'll have very easy transport to the venue and downtown

I wouldn't count on Foos, I need evidence that they're going to continue on after these Taylor tribute shows before I pencil them in on any lineup, and honestly wouldn't count on the Strokes. They are a white whale for me and I grew up on their music but every time I try and see them something happens, but I wouldn't be surprised if after the festival cycle and touring with RHCP they take some time off. I guess Boston is an easy enough one off if they wanted to.
I think the top line will be RATM - Florence - Lizzo
That's still two rock acts, but also two women which would be dope, and Lizzo would move a shit ton of tickets, but is also pretty respected across the board.
he/they '12 - Firefly '13 - Firefly, Made In America '14 - Firefly, Made In America '15 - Mountain Jam (Sunday), Firefly, Pitchfork, Made In America '16 - Boston Calling, Firefly, Osheaga, Made In America, Roots Picnic NYC '17 - Boston Calling, Gov Ball, Firefly (Sunday), Pitchfork, Day For Night '18 - Boston Calling, Mountain Jam, Osheaga '19 - Form, Firefly (Sunday) '22 - Boston Calling, Firefly '24 - Solid Sound, Soundside
as much as I would love 2 women headliners being booked it doesnt seem likely given where theyre trending in their bookings. i think its more likely we get at least 2 male headliners and a bunch of women in the 2nd/3rd lines like they did this year. Rage for the buttrock metallica type crowd, Arctic Monkeys for the indie/strokes crowd, Lizzo/Doja Cat for gen z/younger fest goers.
Hot take but Rage and Doja alone would sell this out. Also TD garden was one of the few arenas AM sold out on their last tour so theres clearly a huge audience for them here

Both Florence and Lizzo will have just played the Garden the previous fall. Why risk getting an "Oh, we just saw them here" reaction from locals when the lineup drops, when so many artists don't play Boston on every tour and would be fresher bookings in that regard?

Good point, I still think Lizzo would move a lot of tickets. Both Arctic Monkeys and Flo are to my eye a big hole in the kind of artists that Boston Calling is built on so if they find themselves in need of an Inide/Alt headliner it makes to get one of those two. I just went with Flo.
