Boston Calling isn’t a festival, it’s just a long concert.
Saturday was the worst festival day I’ve ever seen, and that’s no joke. Just LiveNation at its finest.
Yesterday was good. Brutus rules, the Walkmen were good, everything I saw sounded good, no lines, very chill. QOTSA crushed it, and I literally only knew 2 Paramore songs going in but holy shit they crushed it.
Hell no, I left right after Gizzard wrapped up a few minutes before 10. I could hear a song in the distance as I was walking out, and it sure wasn't anything punk pop.
The Dripping Tap > Every Paramore Song, Ever
Is it not being pop-punk supposed to be a dig? They’ll play some old hits, but they haven’t been pop-punk in a decade, and fortunately so, because their best music has been since then. Also didn't you say yourself you didn't know any of their music? So the animosity you seem to have towards them is... odd, you could say.
I did check out some of their stuff. The older pop punk material was decent, although unremarkable, but I hated the singles off the new album. I also saw a couple of clips of an opening set they did at a recent Taylor Swift date, and HW's entire stage demeanor seemed very Vegas-y to me. It's a hard pass on Paramore for me.

She's one of the most natural, in-the-moment performers you'll find, so really don't get the Vegas-y notion. But I also don't feel watching an opening set for Swifties is the getting the best read on them. But your call.

It was my first time at Boston Calling, I see a lot of complaints about crowds and lines and what not, I had no issues - we went both Saturday/Sunday and had a great time each day, primarily for Mt. Joy/Flaming Lips on Saturday and QOTSA/Gizz on Sunday.
The Lumineers and Paramore are not my cup of tea but enjoyed both of those sets, they each put on a good show.
Also caught Bleachers and Maren Morris on Sunday, both good sets as well.
Lol that's great. I'm extra peeved now Roo didn't make the jump with them. Would have been a perfect Saturday woman-fronted headliner.
You can tell by watching them that Paramore are at peak confidence in how well they have honed their entire craft.
yeah they strike me as an act that would have been headlining festivals a long time ago if it werent for the misogyny within pop punk/rock scenes. they blew the killers, eminem, jack white, tool, and chance out of the water. Probably my favorite headliner here next to tame impala and nine inch nails
That coupled with the "Warped Tour stink" a lot of bands from that era had. Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco, Paramore, My Chemical Romance were all major ticket movers in the late 00's but the indie crowd had a "ew those bands are for 12-year-old girls" attitude which is why the likes of Paramore are only now getting their due as a major festival act.
I'd say I'm a casual fan of Paramore, not super into them/think they're a bit overrated, and I loved their set. If by "Vegas-y" we mean HW just sounded a little rehearsed/scripted then yeah sure, i guess i agree with that. I think there's a big difference between banter/persona feeling "rehearsed" compared to feeling "fake"/"not genuine" though. Someone can sound rehearsed while still conveying a feeling that the spirit of it all is still very genuine and not an act or a character, and that's how i think she came off. (Also, tonssss of bands use the same basic banter every single show, so i honestly didn't spend one second thinking about it during the show.)

Yeah she speaks on a lot of similar stuff in each show (band history/turmoil, diversity of fans, etc,) but she is definitely a very genuine person if you’re familiar with her. She’s definitely feeling herself more than ever before, but more power to her. She’s been through some tough shit.

definitely glad i finally started to get into them. my partner has loved them since they were in like elementary school lol so i’m now very familiar w the band. i also fucking love that Hayley wore an abort the surpreme court tee. not to mention her comments on desantis and general commitment to social justice while not caring if she alienates or loses fans. a lot of acts avoid discussing politics or avoid using violent language but she hasnt shyed away from doing that which is rly cool

Jambase has videos from the King Gizzard set, plus a recap which includes more info about the missing girl and the unrelated (?) ferris wheel incident.
What is it about the Blue Stage? That's where BROCKHAMPTON had their first performance after a member left the group due to allegations of abusive behavior, and it impacted their performance both emotionally and structurally (If I recall correctly, they didn't simply skip the departing member's verse in a song, but remained silent while the music played.)
I'm hardly psychic by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd swear that there's a vibe there, one which can lead to some amazingly strong performances, but also some strangeness onstage and off. Stephen King really needs to give the Blue Stage it's own novel; instead of focusing upon a hotel, a car, or a dog, it's about a festival stage.

Onstage comments like those are so important when playing places where the messaging young people get from family, schools, clergy, and the community is very different, and it does take some courage to say things like that in some places in the U.S. So, I'll give her that. Nobody walks out of a concert with a entirely new perspective, as if a light switch was just flipped, but there are kids whose access to TV and the internet have been limited by parents, and if they can sneak out to the show, or just see some videos on a friend's phone or tablet, that's a good thing.

She has really come into her own in that regard. She used to be held back by both some (ex)bandmates and just the pressure of feeling like she had to be a perfect role model for younger girls in a scene dominated by misogynistic men. I mean there’s a Kerrang article from like 2006 when she was 17 that’s actually disgusting, just shitting on her. And she always took the high road, even at that age. And now they’re the band that’s left standing and destroying. Yeah I’m a stan at this point lol, and I don’t even listen to their older music really (though all of it hits live). Just love them as a band. Their Zane Lowe interviews from After Laughter then the one for This Is Why really shed light on who they are.
