On a 6 hour solo drive from Columbus hoping to get in for Grace Ives. In the cloud tie dye Roo shirt from this year.
Was able to catch Grace Ives last night at Sleeping Village. She put on a fun show. Hope she is ok after falling off the stage last night. It was like a magic act one second she is there next gone. Gotta give her props for putting on a great show after that.
Should be in by 2 hopefully today. Thank god the weather is going to be nice today
Enjoying Youth Lagoon stream. Didn’t know anything about them, but reading up- dude’s been through some serious shit. Glad he’s re-emerged and out there performing on a beautiful day.
Merch lines have basically been nonexistent this year, which is a big change from the last two years! (And actually for drink lines too now that I think about it?)

When its butt ugly merch it helps. It was really weird walking form Red to Blue and going behind the baseball diamond and there was almost no foot traffic at certain times. Even Goose Island at 7pm had zero line which is crazy

Was shocked at how few people were there. Nation of Language, Alvvays, and The Smile were my highlights. Also the dust fries from the Indonesian + Creole place were perfect.
-If you had told me the Axel Boman live set was going to be "deep house beats played pretty straight with saxophone over top" I probably would have grimaced but it ended up being a very fun set. Lots of buildup during the songs but the beat would drop at often very unexpected times, which I appreciated. He closed with "Hold On" from his last album, which is a very corny song but I'll forgive it.
-Caught parts of Nation of Language and Youth Lagoon. Both were good! I'm so so on their music so I always forget that Nation of Language is a very energetic live band, like if Sam Herring fronted New Order. ANd despite it being the exact opposite mood I thought the Youth Lagoon set was very pretty. I thought I'd be bored but I was more enchanted, which is nice (even if I think Trevor Powers' voice is a dead ringer for the "Welcome to my kitchen" vine.)
-Jlin was the set of the day, easily. She came up and opened with "1%", my favorite song of hers, and it was all high BPMs and nonstop bass after that, with no breaks. Add to that an audience who was really into and keeping up as best they could with their dancing and you got a perfect combination. Also while their sets are structured very differently, at least musically speaking I found myself thinking that Jlin is the closest thing we have to an American Aphex Twin. Also, this may sound like a backhanded compliment, but I do very much mean it: I loved how during the set she'd sporadically clap along or make a stank face during a particularly heavy bass drop. I love it when artists make faces! I love seeing an artist be just as into the process as you are!
-I'd been down on Perfume Genius's last two albums so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the songs better live. Part of that is certainly due to how much Mike Hadreas sells it as the frontman, often acting like the male Karen O (at one point literally creating a giant monster of himself out of as he put it "peepee poopoo" colored tulle and a desk chair wrapped around his microphone cord before collapsing on stage). Part of it is also probably due to the arrangements sounding more sprightly live; a particular highlight was "Eye in the Wall" being rearranged into basically a Talking Heads song, which was cool. Weirdly, the only moment I didn't like was when they eliminated all the tension of "Slip Away" by blasting you with noise right at the beginning. Oh well, there were plenty of dazzling moments too, including a different great wall of noise moment with "Otherside".
-Caught the beginning and very end of Alvvays. They're a very good live band now, and it's funny how much clearer Molly sings live! Also I made it just in time to be the last person at their artist signing today. They were very gracious with me and we had a laugh about McDonald's since I had just run over from there. Fun times!
-Also caught a good portion of Leikeli47. It's funny because on record she raps in a very low register and then live she screams out everything as high pitched as possible, which is kind of a funny dichotomy. Above all else though, she's a consummate entertainer, emphasizing the audience participation on hooks, having some funny stage moves, and bringing as many people up on to the stage as possible. I really enjoyed it!
-And then The Smile. I'm not sure how to rate this. You're always going to be grading on a curve because this band would not have headlined if it was not for the fact that Thom Yorke is singing in this band. They played a lot of new songs, had a very beautiful lighting setup, and kind of sucked the life out of "You Will Never Work in Television Again" for me. I think it was smart for Pitchfork to book them. Don't think I'll see them again.
Anyway, had a lot of fun! It really is noticeably emptier this year, not like "this fest is in danger" or anything but definitely a lot lower compared to the highs of 2021. Can't imagine it'll be more packed today. See you all there! (I might actually wear the unicorn horn today too since I'll have my bag probably.)

I think 4 of the first 5 acts I saw yesterday were solo performers backed by tracks. Might well be a cost thing related to COVID? Grace Ives was fun but the others were fairly forgettable
Perfume Genius > Alvvays > Smile was a nice little run though. Haven't seen Alvvays since 2016 but they've drastically improved. New Smile tracks sounded great, very into Colors Fly

My mind went here as well. It's not the same as having a full band but I get it.

Gotta be a cost thing for sure. Last year was similar. Like going from The Armed which had 8 people on stage at one point to Hyd which was one person with a wall of smoke behind them at 3pm is kind of jarring. The one silver lining is that technical issues have a lower chance of arising if its only one laptop or keyboard versus 10 instruments to check. You could also attribute it to the artist, especially if theyre starting out and havent gotten to the point of being able to afford having a backing band on a tour.
Good times yesterday. Great weather. Obviously not as packed as you normally expect it. The water refills with the spray tip made the mines non existent. Axel Boman, Grace Ives, Nation Of Language, Alvvays and The Smiles were great.
Lol a single day is $116 at the gate according to the signage.
so basically no fees then That's good to know for next year
I was able to upgrade to plus for the weekend and they still added on the fees. its just not on the signs fyi for the future
I had a great first day. I haven't been since 2018 so was nice to be back on the grounds. Like everyone has mentioned the crowds were very small and I was able to find a good spot at all the sets I saw.
Perfume Genius was the highlight of the day for me. It's always great seeing a band improve overtime and get better. I first saw him in 2012 in a small club in Tucson.
Leikeli47 was great just wish she showed up on time, could have watched more of Alvvays.
Looking forward to today hoping to start with Black Belt Eagle Scout and just bounce around from there. Leaving early to catch First Aid Kit at the Salt Shed tonight.
Anyone else not able to rewind the blue stage on the youtube stream yesterday? Watched The Smile, wanted to go back and watch Axel and Jlin but wasn't letting me. Green/Red stream let me go back and watch some other performances, strange
