i used to be a reggae hater. i think that opinion was formed watching way too many terrible "reggae" jam bands play in shitty bars and small theaters across the southern united states.
nothing is worse than going to see a band you enjoy, showing up on time to make sure you don't miss a note, and finding out there is an unbilled opener called something like "Rebelution".
but i've since discovered that dub reggae is one of my favorite genres to just throw on and listen to. i came to dub by working backwards from post-punk.
sublime opened the floodgates for bad white boy reggae bands.
i mean i still think it shouldn’t last super far just because of influence but i do understand it’s significance and think that somewhat justifies it not being the first out
Influence snoozefluence
It’s literally the most boring genre on the list
One of my coworkers used to play it at work. Some of that shit gets dark. I’d almost say heavy. A lot of of it reminded me of post rock, which I love. That’s really the only time I ever listened to it.
Obviously you’re talking about John Holt or Toots Hibbert? Or ASWAD or or The Mighty Diamonds or The Gladiators? Or Lee ‘FUCKING SCRATCH’ Perry?
Pretty some of those guys like scratch are actually dub, but that proves my point so proceed
Lee was definitely dub. You could make an argument that The Upsetters were more traditional for a bit but it’s silly. It was a group finding their sound.
I do agree that in this both Dub and Reggae are interchangeable.
I thought of this song for the first time since the 90s because of this thread. It's a techno remix of the first reggaeton song I ever heard, and even though I still love it, it will probably get both reggaeton and techno voted off

Lee claims to have invented reggae and given it to Marley as a gift. Then he went on to dub. I think it's kinda hairsplitty to say Perry wasn't reggae.

my main issue with reggae itself is that it has a huge homophobia problem. there are so many reggae songs that glorify killing gay men that a counter movement was started against it.

totally. and like so many terrible genre-trends it started with a band that were incredibly talented songwriters.

Hyperpop kinda seems like a lot of the music that was bad when I was in middle and high school (pop punk, nu-metal, Cascada-type dance music that kids who were too into anime liked) blended together to make something that is sometimes halfway decent. It's inspirational, really.

But what isn’t a joke is that reggae is at least sparking debate as as it is
The only argument for classical so far is from a bunch of nerds getting angry and pretentious about people not wanting to listen to some dead guy fingerblast a piano for 45 mins

I could not stand Sublime while it was happening. Now I’ll stop and sing along with their songs on the radio. I always liked 311 for some reason but enough to buy their albums after 96. Every white guy reggae I’ve heard after that is terrible.
