Jazz is nice and I’d like to say a lot about the genre but I dont. You could throw on some jazz and my dumb monkey brain would just be like “sounds good me like”.
totally. and like so many terrible genre-trends it started with a band that were incredibly talented songwriters.
I could not stand Sublime while it was happening. Now I’ll stop and sing along with their songs on the radio. I always liked 311 for some reason but enough to buy their albums after 96. Every white guy reggae I’ve heard after that is terrible.
311 is a curious band. i adored them as a teenager but my interest waned pretty quickly as i got older. i'm not sure if they are really great songwriters? i think the majority of their appeal is a solid rhythm section combined with a very pleasing tonality and a certain attitude. like take their biggest hit "all mixed up": is that a good song? it doesn't seem like it is, but something about it is engaging. it's a super smooth listen, and somehow catchy despite lacking any obvious hook. but if i put in on right now i know i'd stop whatever i'm doing to sing "you make me nervous / throat dry / my brain is empty / don't know why / but i saw you doin something that is really truly nothing and you can bust me out all day". not even sure if those are the right lyrics.
"offbeat bareass" as another example isn't even a song. it's basically a rhythm with lyrics subversive for their time. "throw me a joint on stage, what's up" still hits me in a good feeling place in my brain even though i never listen to 311 and haven't smoked or thrown a joint in a long time.
Blues is foundational to everything modern in American and British music starting with Rock and Roll in the 1950's.
influential =/= good
Of course not. But all the late 1960's rock, psychedelic and dark rock is blues based. No one has to like or listen to any of the bands I named earlier, but we don't get Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Black Sabbath or any of thousands of other acts and/or musicians that followed those tree branches.

ok and that's irrelevant to blues being good, those acts all fall into different categories.
For the purposes of this survivor I imagine that orchestral music in general falls under classical? Clint Mansell and Ludovico Einaudi are great. And I know y’all love your Hans Zimmer.
are you all gonna be acting like you listen to tons of classical and jazz in here?
not going to front like i'm listening to classical and jazz all the time, but i've taken some moderate depth dives into the genres, but only the slices that interest me. for classical the romantics and for jazz mostly hard bop, but with a dash of weird-era miles davis.

i'm not well-versed enough in jazz to describe why this is good, but it just feels so right. it all seems perfect, even though the solos could've gone in any direction, it's like this is the take where they got it all right.
whole album is great, hank mobley is great. these Blue Note records in particular are such a gift because it was so many of the same musicians playing on each others' records, and all of them were legends in their own right.

basically i guess i'm saying 311 was just a vibe.
Ok but you know 311 means KKK right?
woah i retract everything i said then. i'm staunchly against the KKK.
