i'm just getting a sense that the hyperpop fans are not going down in this survivor without a fight. i respect that but also will enjoy the kicking and screaming.
Ambient seems to be flying under the radar here. If I wanted to listen to nothing, I could easily do that without turning on any music at all
well yes if I wanted a perfect sensory experience to focus or relax I would fly to my secluded meditation cave in Malaysia where, sitting on my expansive rugs with the smell of incense wafting over me, all I can hear are the dulcet tones of the wind bouncing off the rocks in the background, but in a pinch ambient music will do.
Link me some ambient music that simulates that specific experience? sounds relaxing

You almost sold me on ambient, but then I remembered I got a massage a couple weeks ago, and the music did make the experience even more relaxing. So I stuck with my original plan, and I’m going with house here.

Ambient music during spa services (massages, facials, mani/pedis, etc) always seems to relax me. Which has actually been proven in scientific studies.
the minimal beats and rhythms of ambient music–often used as background nose–is so effective that it is able to put listener's senses at rest, resulting in lower blood pressure and heart rate.

ok my preferred form of ambient music is not really "10 Hours Of White Noise" but in general if I'm working on something and really need to focus I like listening to instrumentals from any genre (instrumental rock, beats, house, etc.) But I think ambient music can do quite a lot more than just being sleepytime music, like with the huge wall-of-noise style of someone like Rafael Anton Irisarri:
or the postapocalyptic soundscapes of Lillien Rosarian:
or the classic synth exercises of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith:

maybe a controversial opinion but I would associate bands like Sigur Ros or GYBE with "indie rock" more honestly.
I'm on board with this. Some post-rock could be described as ambient, but a lot of it also gets really heavy in a way that wouldn't work as the soundtrack to receiving a relaxing massage.

Speak for yourself.

i agree post-rock doesn't totally fall under ambient, for the reasons you mentioned. certain tracks start out kind of chill but then get kind of heavy. for example, check out the fucking riff in this song:

there's lots of flavors of ambient. these were my suggestions in now playing when someone asked a couple years ago:
bing and ruth - ambient with acoustic elements, rooted in more classical music lawrence english - more drony/field recroding ambient; heavy synths and dark soundscapes mind over mirrors - drone folk ambient lusine - ambient songs with more upfront beat gas - ambient electronic, minimal gaussian curve - prominent beats with ambient synth sounds those who walk away - field recordings and ambient soundscapes; interesting concept album; cfcf & jean michel blais - minimal, delicate piano the american dollar - ambient with a more post-rock vibe; like a mix of EiTS, tycho, tangerine dream, the album leaf haushka - piano music with found sounds jefre-cantu ledesma - if you want a more shoegazy ambient feel nadia struwigh - dark ambient techno
then there's people like william basinski or klara lewis who just play with slightly altered repeating loops to make swirly sound baths.
and pretty much everything from stars of the lid/brian mcbride is great. and nils frahm, brian eno, olafur arnalds. sigur ros and max richter have also both made music specifically about sleep (liminal and sleep, respectively).
I listen to a lot of ambient music when I am writing.
The reggaeton beat is incredibly repetitive but what I think is funny that techno and house got no shit whatsoever for also using the same repetitive rhythms yesterday.
do you actually think the people that hate reggaeton are big house/techno fans?

What other genre could give us a movie that features a guitar duel between Ralph Macchio and Steve Vai in a speakeasy it is heavily implied is situated in Hell and in front of Satan, himself?
