Polyphia out of Plano, Texas is one of the greatest mostly-instrumental bands in existence today. The current lineup consists of guitarists Tim Henson and Scott LePage, bassist Clay Gober and drummer Clay Aeschliman. They started out playing mostly progressive metal style but have morphed into an instrumental band that plays to rock and hiphop beats with a general pop based structure to the songs without themselves being pop. The new tour starts tomorrow night. I’ve got tickets for night 2 and am ecstatic to see them again after catching them play with Chon in 2018 and being blown away by the talent. But drop the fucking album since the tour starts tomorrow night in Houston (hopefully the full album will be out tomorrow). I’ll link it whenever it comes out and then add some comments after I’ve had a chance to listen to it a few times. They said they were working with an OG rap producer and the greatest guitarist in the world which fans suspect is a nod to Steve Vai. Who knows for now, but they do have two songs and videos out from the album. The first release, Playing God, dabbles in flamenco which is unique for them so far through 3 albums. It’s played on new Ibanez acoustic guitars that haven’t yet been released to the market.
The second song Neurotica was released last week. Video features a collaboration with artist Nusi Quero which includes custom masks and also custom metal work on the instruments. It’s definitely math styled but played over rage rap beats.
Yes, they are very mathy but when you have a band where the two lead guitarists are both virtuosos as well as the bassist and drummer, shits going to get technical. More to come…
Still no official word on when the full album will be released. Maybe they’re more focused on their tour. They did release an ep of the first two songs but also Beats versions and a kinda badass accoustic version of Playing God. Texas still producing some of the greatest modern guitarists (Henson & LePage in this instance of course)

I appreciate the music. But when I opened it up, I thought we were about to get into some existential shit. And since I just started this Death Doula class last week, I was pretty excited.
How have I not previously existed if all I've known is existance?
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

But I like the tunes too.
Yeah. Looks like the album is getting released on October 28th. They put out the third track today called ABC featuring Sophia Black which looks K-pop inspired with them taking a fun approach to the video. They seem to be saying they’re going outside all bounds for this album. Already I feel like Playing God is one of the best things I’ve heard in the 2020’s. That’s a nod to flamenco. Here’s the track list with featured performers then the new video. Based on this there will be rock and hip hop as well.
1. Genesis feat. Brasstracks 2. Playing God 3. The Audacity feat. Anomalie 4. Reverie 5. ABC feat. Sophia Black 6. Memento Mori feat. Killstation 7. Fuck Around and Find Out feat. $not 8. All Falls Apart 9. Neurotica 10. Chimera feat. Lil West 11. Bloodbath feat. Chino Moreno 12. Ego Death feat. Steve Vai

So at Furnace Fest yesterday I was super excited to see this technical metal band y'all had been raving about, without actually listening to more than a song first. Halfway through their set, which I'm enjoying the hell out of, the lead singer says "this is our first show in three years" and I think "wait didn't browell and esteban just see these guys?"
Turns out, Periphery and Polyphia are not the same band, but both rip!
Ego Death, the 5th song off their upcoming album has been released. It is the collaboration with Steve Vai. They previously released Playing God, Neurotica, the J-Pop tune ABC and a collaboration with Brasstracks which was good but not anything super notable. So this starts out with the band just playing technical shit like they always do for the first half the video. Then they end up on the roof with Vai sitting on a throne and he joins them in a 3 guitar ride to guitar Heaven including him bending strings like he is known to do. Pretty good song, and it features a Brasstracks cameo at the very end of the song. Can’t wait for the album in a few weeks, and I hope they release a couple more songs before it’s out.
After the fact edit - Henson and LePage both sit on the throne early in the video shredding shit. When they move upstairs and then to the roof Vai is on the throne. He gets up and plays with the band swallowing his own ego in a 3 way guitar jam that’s as good as anything happening today. So in my mind they ceded him the throne burying their own egos and he does as well joining the band. Since it’s the last song on the album, they’re leaving it all on the table.
Album drops tonight at midnight. They did a two hour pre-stream last night, but I didn’t watch it. Tim and Scott said the Vai collaboration (Ego Death) is their favorite track off the album, and that’s already out. I’m most excited to hear the rap work they did and also the collaboration with Chino Moreno which is supposedly a heavy rock song. Album will end up being about 7 or 8 different genres which nobody is doing and definitely not at the level they play. Here was a good article released last week that gives a great primer on what’s up.
Edit - damn. Album is good as fuck. It’s for sure meant to be listened to in order but I’ll do that tomorrow. Lots of new-nwo music and directions. Literally nobody is pioneering shit at this level. Congrats to them.
