Well, my old festival standby (a 2-man Eureka Timberlite tent dating back to Woodstock '94) looks like it's ready for retirement. It's been through so many fests and backpacking trips that I can't complain but the nylon is starting to break down in places. So, I'm in the market for a new one and wanted to get folks opinions on tents. I'm looking for a lightish 3 season backpacking type tent, large 2 man or smallish 3 man. My budget is up to ~$225, but I could go (a little) higher. I'm looking at the Sierra Designs Reverse Combi, which got an award from Outside mag, but not many other reviews. Any ideas?
i got a eureka k2-xt last year that i really like. it is very waterproof and surprisingly breathable during hot weather. setup is not the easiest in the world, but i really like the design. they are on ebay these days for about $250. check them out.
ashwa64: thanks for the recommend, looks like a nice tent, I think I've decided on the SD reverse combi though. LIGuy: you might want to check out Sierra Designs Orion AST. It's ~$150 at rei.com (item 736402 in their outlet store), it looks like a solid tent for the money, I was very seriously considering it before deciding on the combi. BTW, congrats on the admin thing and thanks for helping Adam out.
No doubt about it, Sierra Designs makes a great tent. I bought an Orion CD back in '96 for backpacking trips, and it's held up like a champ. At $150, that Orion AST is a steal.

you know, i do a lot of camping and packing in the back country... and i picked up this years gear guide... its in back packer magazine, and they have some really good tents. they are from all price ranges... and they are all good, solo, 2 man, 3 man, 6 man... i would pick it up and check itout, it's only a 3 dollar magazine. so check it out and look at the tent section. it is a good one this time around, and these are tested by pro's and what-not. see if that helps.
I have an unusual strategy for tents. I usually just buy a pretty cheap tent (like $30-50). With a little $5 can of waterproofer, it works for all but the most inclement weather, and I usually won't go backpacking in that anyway. I spend the money I saved on other gear. Best thing is they are usually really light and I've found that I actually save money. I may go through 3 or maybe 4 of those tents in the time it takes me to go through 1 better one, but I've still come out about $100 bucks ahead. Plus for Bonnaroo, I'd suggest something a little less nice since you aren't actually with the tent most of the time.
My brother finally took back his kick-ass tent, so I'm left without one currently. I do a fair amount of festival-going and camping throughout the summer, so I'm looking for a tent that will really hold up in the mud, rain, sun, etc. Ideally, I'd like to spend less than $100 - should I just go straight to eBay? Anyone have any recommendations?

When we did tent camping I allways liked Eureka or North Face. Check out Campmor (campmor.com) I think you might be spending more then $100...
I just splurged on a 2006 REI Half Dome 2 HC tent for $170-20%(sale for members) since I'm going to be doing some overnight backpacking this year. (I say splurged because i've never spent more than $80 on a tent). I dont think I'll be bringing it to bonnaroo though...
I just splurged on a 2006 REI Half Dome 2 HC tent .......
I get Backpacker magazine and in the gear guide issue that tent is rated a best buy. I looked at that tent but got a Taj 3 off ebay, for the extra room.
OK, I am trying to chose between these two tents I have a link for below: I want to go with the cheaper one, but I don't really know what the main difference between the two are. Can anyone explan it to me?

Those are nice tents, i'd go with the eclipse over the other one though... Eurekas will set up faster with the snap design, but its up to you man. Im down with Eureka though...

Oh and if you go with Eureka and want a roomy 2 man i'd buy one that says 3 man... They're designed for lightweight backpacking and are usually a little tighter on the space...
