Spain now avoids a potential quarterfinal with Brazil with finishing second Might explain why they weren't pushing in extra time once they knew Costa Rica was out
would have been incredible if CR had been able to win, but they still played well enough to drag Germany out with them, and that's something to be proud of
I’m insanely proud of how CR did at this World Cup. I went into this hoping “I’d be nice if we score a goal or two.” We beat the group winners and made Germany shit themselves for 20 minutes.
This team had zero skill. The worst team we’ve ever sent to this tournament. A lesser team folds after that Spain debacle, but we preserved purely on pride and guile and fucking balls. We may not have the players some of these other nations have, but we sure have that.

Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?

Damn, no way I'll be done with work by 10am local time. I think I'm going to DVR the game, not listen to my usual sports talk or NPR after 10, and hope nobody drops a spoiler in passing before I can get home. Didn't work for the Argentina v. Mexico match I tried that with because I overheard some rando mention the score, but I have to try.
and with that, RIP to the current group stage format
Too bad, I really like the format they've been using. It seems fair - round robin vs three other teams with two per group advancing is enough of a chance. If you don't get 4-5 points or have a bad goal differential, you don't deserve to advance. You can have one real clunker if you take care of business in the other two.
Not sure we need 48 teams. It doesn't need to be like the NBA where more than half the league makes the playoffs/play-in. Qualifying should mean something. Expansion makes it easy to justify giving all three host nations automatic bids though. There will be groups where there are no wins, each team in the group has two points, and eliminating a team based on GD will look silly. The possibility of collusion is real, too, if a team wins their first match and loses intentionally to eliminate the team they played first, who drew with the third team. Playing matches simultaneously limits that possibility now. It allows for a better chance to advance to knockout play but cheapens it a bit.

I like the format I described over the prevailing group of three and 32 team elimination round because it:
-Doesn’t cheapen the group stage with 2/3rds of the field advancing. You still get exactly half the field advancing and preserve those juicy, juicy group stage games
-Rewards the group winners by giving them a 1/4 shot of reaching the semis as opposed to the runners up, who have a 1/12 shot
-Allows for the winners bracket to be played mostly simultaneously with the losers bracket as the winners bracket would feature 9 games total while the runner up bracket would feature 12 group stage games and 3 knockout games
-Additionally rewards the group winners by having them only play two knockout games to reach the semifinals, while the runners up would play two knockout games but also two additional group stage games.
If my math is correct, this totals exactly 100 games. 72 initial group stage games, 12 intermediate group stage games, 12 knockout games before the semifinals, the two semifinal games, the 3rd place game, and the final.

I think the "paired group" idea makes the most sense. 16 groups of 3, and every team in Group A plays the three teams in Group B (and obviously vice versa). Then Group A is measured against each other in their games vs group B.

Cameroon is what happens when you start believing in yourself and throw your intention out there against all odds and the universe says “you can do it!!”.
And you do it because you believed. And then you took your kit off and get a red card and the ref gives you a high five. You have reached god status in your country and I can’t wait to see what your team does in four years.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
