Forgive me if this has been covered somewhere, and please point me to that thread, since I haven't been on here much lately.
Rolling Stone just released their list of the supposed 200 Best Singers of All Time. Now you may say that Rolling Stone is trash, which is debatable, or that this list doesn't matter worth a poop, which is undeniable. But I thought it was an interesting read. It didn't come without a little controversy though.
In particular, Celine Dion fans are outraged that she wasn't included. I can't personally stand her music but I must admit that her fans aren't wrong to be aghast. Some of the names on the list are a little curious, due either to their brief or young careers, or otherwise light bodies of work. Billie Eilish and SZA but not Celine Dion or Dionne Warwick? Don't worry, Dion and Ronnie James Dio made it, so it isn't some weird bias against names that start with d-i-o.
Who else did they miss? I must admit that I am not familiar with some of the artists whose success came mainly outside the United States. But I probably would have made room for Stevie Ray Vaughn (also not a case of name bias, since Ms. Nicks and Mr. Wonder are on the list). Okay to have Glenn Danzig and Joe Strummer but not Henry Rollins or Joey Ramone? Not sure who else was wrongly denied but I don't think I saw John Legend's name, nor Billie Joel's. Prince fell outside the top ten, and Taylor did crack the top 100, sorry. I won't spoil the rest but I'd be interested to see some other opinions.

Yeah, it certainly isn't perfect. Has a few I definitely would have forgotten about, and some I don't know and thus can't judge. But there are certainly a few head scratchers in terms of omissions, inclusions, and order.
Seriously, SZA? I get it that people like Billie Eilish, but she's one that demonstrates a recency bias, in my opinion. All talent and art aside, do people really consider Karen O and PJ Harvey to be "great singers?" Amy Winehouse's body of work (only 3 albums, not to single her out) is enough? Michael Stipe way ahead of Frank Ocean? They're definitely factoring in overall impact in some cases but not others, or else you should make room for James Hetfield (who two generations of metal singers have wanted to be) and give Chet Baker (who I love as a singer but is known to everyone as a trumpeter) the boot.

I love CHet Baker's voice, have ever since I was a teenager in the 90's and got into jazz for a minute, but everyone thinks of him as a trumpeter and not a singer.
Missing Beth Gibbons and Elizabeth Fraser too. Definitely feels like they just threw a list of random names to try to please everyone. Like all of Rolling Stone's lists.

I don't know man, just trying to figure out a justification for some of the inclusions/omissions. Jimi is head and shoulders above most if you go on pure talent and innovation though, regardless of the size of his body of work. He may not have been around that long but he's a no-doubter on any list of greatest guitar players.
Another debatable snub I just thought of is John Mellencamp. I always wished I could sing like him, if not John Fogerty. Anybody wanna make a case for Daryl Hall or Huey Lewis?
My own personal list would include Robert Palmer, 100% for sure, lock it in, final answer. That dude was freaking amazing. And I'd give serious consideration to Michael Franks' dated-as-hell-sounding ass. And maybe Leslie Feist, Kacey Musgraves, Les Claypool, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Dan Auerbach, Sallie Ford, Wayne Coyne, Miho Hatori from Cibo Matto, Cab Calloway, and Margaret Glaspy, but I probably shouldn't be trusted with making these lists.
