andrew has requested his pick to go to a poll. They are ineligible by the Wikipedia rule, but may fit the "spirit of the game" exception.
Any artist that has played at at least one full concert of six or more songs since January 1, 2015 (or has upcoming dates officially announced) is eligible to be drafted. However, they must meet what is known as the Wikipedia Rule: In the genre section of their Wikipedia page's header, at least one of the following words must be included: hard, heavy, metal, punk, industrial, ska, emo, -core, or noise. If there are strange exceptions that by the spirit of the game seem like they should be eligible, such as acts in subgenres of the previously listed, go ahead and draft them, but they are subject to poll.
I'll restate my argument and then let everyone yell at each other:
They came up in the same scene as The Cure and are extremely influential to so many other bands already drafted. I believe that they should stand in a "spirit of the game" exception.
Depeche Mode has explored new realms of postpunk, electronic textures, and futuristic industrial sounds, paving the way for the genre we now call ‘synth pop.’ Hear more about the band's sonic history in our Inductee Insights series, powered by PNC Bank.
Personal Jesus is heavier than most things made by a lot of artists drafted. Halo sounds like a Pretty Hate Machine B-Side. Behind the Wheel could be a New Order song.
I'll keep using the Wikipedia rule too for their albums:
The album Construction Time Again is listed as industrial. The album Some Great Reward is listed as industrial. The album People are People is listed as industrial. The album Black Celebration is listed as post-punk. The album Violator is listed goth rock. The album Delta Machine is listed as industrial.
I don't have a dog in this fight, but this seems a pretty obvious yes to me. Their sound is clearly indebted to post-punk, and even though they don't meet the Wikipedia genre rule, their Wikipedia also states:
Depeche Mode's music has mainly been described as synth-pop, new wave, electronic rock, dance-rock, alternative rock and pop rock. The band also experimented with various other genres throughout its career, including avant-garde, electronica, pop, soul, techno, industrial rock and heavy metal.
The dark themes and moods of Depeche Mode's lyrics and music have been enjoyed by several heavy metal artists, and the band influenced acts such as Marilyn Manson and Deftones. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails also cited Depeche Mode, in particular their 1986 album Black Celebration, as a major influence on his beginnings. They have also been named as an influence on Detroit techno and indie rock.
