The Goal The goal of Festival Tycoon is to create a long-term fictional festival landscape. I think most will create their own festival idea but you may recreate Bonnaroo or a “deceased” festival if you wish, but keep in mind that you’re basically starting from scratch and it would take a few “years” to make a big lineup. You may have to book some “bad” acts to sell tickets.
The Setup After COVID, no festival came back. Who cares why? What am I, a science fiction writer? Tranter Industries is prepared to give a festival to anyone who wants it. Any city, any genre, unless there is another festival in the same city within a few months of yours or one with a very similar target demographic (i.e. don’t want 4 niche electronic festivals in NYC in one year or two jam festivals in Atlanta in back to back months). However, to prevent most of these losing millions, the budgets for all festivals will be $3 million. The festivals that sell well will see an increased budget, the ones that don’t may see a decreased budget or even complete cancellation. All festivals are guaranteed a second year, no matter how poorly year 1 sells but keep in mind that year 1 sales may be used to determine if you get a year 3. You may join and drop out at any point but the longer you wait to book acts, the harder it may be.
I do not plan for this to run at real-time speed. We may even run through 3 festival years in “real” years. Everyone will reveal their lineups for each edition during the same week.
To join: Please message me directly with your festival name, genre, location, and target demographic. Not all of these need to fleshed upon messaging me but give me a general feel. You may play anonymously. If you do so, please let me know. You may also play as a team with another user.
How to play: I, Tranter, will act as the sole agent. Want to book an act? Message me with the act and an offer amount. I may accept, decline, or counter.
As soon as the act is confirmed, the amount will be subtracted from your remaining budget (ex. want to book Weezer? If you send me a 400k headlining offer and I accept, your budget is now 2.6M). It’s that simple! I will keep a spreadsheet of all your booked acts and remaining budget but try to keep one yourself.
Acts may back out at any time between the initial booking and the lineup drop. If you want to drop an act, you will only receive 50% of the money you paid back (NOTE: this does not apply to artists who are arrested or accused of serious misconduct after the booking. So long as you use this rule in good faith, you will be ok. I will take it on a case by case basis on what I think would realistically cause a festival to drop an artist).
Late Adds: You are free to hold off on any artist announcements you want and you can book new acts post announcement if you have the budget.
Voting: There will be no open-voting. Rather, there will be an anonymous committee, likely including myself, that will determine how well your festival sells. Location, lineup, competition, etc. will be considered. If you want to be part of this committee or partake in any of the other anonymous roles I may have, please PM me but note that you cannot participate in the game if you choose to do so.
NOTE: Rules are subject to change. This is a very complicated game and I can’t foresee every potential issue.

Was anyone else really into roller coasters/ roller coaster tycoon before they were really into music? I was part of a roller coaster tycoon forum as a kid then basically switched to inforoo from that in college.

I loved that game so much, I go back to it every few years

Clarification: don’t think about booking “2023”. Think about booking “year 1”. You can book any time in a calendar year, so don’t think your options are just the summer or fall. You can book a March festival too. The timeline doesn’t follow real life.
Feel free to let me introduce myself, The Festive Browell, Inforoo’s premier source for festival news. Unlike some of these other fools, I am for the people and by the people, with only a smidge of support from the good people over at Tranter Industries. Stay locked in for upcoming news that will certainly be better than this week’s wook infestation via Middy Lights.
My sources tell me the Tennessee Queen is finally make a festival appearance in her home state. You know the one. Better not quit that 9 to 5 if you want to see it happen.
