With this news, I hope the Sahara moves away from being the "party stage" and just becomes another huge stage among the fields that all genres can rotate in and out of. Then they can spread the "party" acts around a bit more to get traffic flowing a bit better.
Why not just have a "party" stage though?
Its mostly edm and rap in there and for those fans of those genres (which I am), its nice to be able to see 2-3 sets in a row of acts you want to see
You want fans of certain artists who want to get closer for the next act to just not care about the act currently on stage?
That is what makes the main stage horrible at times

They want you actually roaming the grounds because that increases food and drink purchases
Maybe I’m just a delulu millenial but would there be any question that Radiohead wouldn’t headline Coachella when/if they come back?
not in my mind, but they did have a pretty small crowd in 2017 compared to other recent headliners so I've resigned myself to the conclusion they wouldn't be likely headliners on the main stage of Coachella going forward.
I literally commented earlier today about how tired it is to equate crowd size with likelihood of headlining. GV/PT do not care. Radiohead will be a headliner if they play again.

Agree with the last sentence, but don't think it's impossible they cross over into that Cure/Depeche Mode territory where it just doesn't make sense to book them anymore. GV has still found ways to work with artists that don't fit Coachella with stuff like JLH/Picnic/Pasadena Daydream, and it wouldn't shock me if that's what they do with Radiohead next time they come around. Honestly, a Daydream style one off anchored by Radiohead is probably a lot better for the average Radiohead fan than Coachella anyway.

It’s definitely possible and maybe likely that Coachella chooses not to book Radiohead next time. But if they DO book them they’re headlining
I hope Sahara isn't necessarily main stage #2, but it's the same Sahara experience with extra space, so the likes of Metro can play in there without the crowd feeling unsafe. I kind of look at it like alternate subs moreso than alternate headliners. I do like keeping the HLs the HLs with "smaller" but good counter programming going.

I guess that could also play into the flexibility of RTTD, which I think is good placement for that situation. Honors a legendary act as an extra headliner on the poster, but keeps the "main 3" more "relevant"? If that makes sense
Finding Frances Dumb Starbucks The Anecdote Souvenir Shop/ELAIFF The Hero Gas Station/Caricature Artist Claw of Shame Smokers Allowed The Richard’s Tip Yogurt Shop/Pizzeria Dating Website/Party Planner Santa/Petting Zoo Haunted House/The Hunk The Movement Shipping Logistics Company Andy v Uber Mechanic/Realtor Electronics Store Private Investigator/Taxi Company Nail Salon/Fun Horseback Riding/Manzone Funeral Home/Burger Joint/Skydiving Sporting Goods Store/Antique Shop Pet Store/Maid Service Clothing Store/Restaurant
There is no world where Radiohead is booked as anything but a headliner.
they would always be a headliner wherever they play I'm just not sure Coachella would book them in the current format. I did put them as RTTD in the 2025 thread, but that's likely the best they can do without 2 headliners. I know I'm just repeating myself at this point. Let a girl have her dreams lol
Or I'll see you at the Radiohead version of Pasadena Daydream in a few years.
I’m in favor of dual headliners, with the caveat that one of they has to be good. I would go to the good headliner. Hopefully they won’t book two good headliners the same night.
It would make sense to create at least one additional Returning to the Desert slot on the poster, and use it to book older, arena-level rock acts like RH/Cure/Dep Mode/FF/NIN. Bands that are probably in a position to headline most fests they play and don't want to sub, but that don't really fit the younger-skewing Coachella headliner mold anymore either. If the quality/prestige of the bands associated with that slot was consistently at a high level, then other bands that would otherwise not consider taking a sub would be more likely to take a RTTD slot and consider it something like a 4th or 5th headliner rather than a sub.
They could still keep the 1st slot and devote that to Electronic like they seem to be doing, or also book older pop/rap acts that fit the same formula.
It would basically create 2 additional headliner slots that skewed older but were still in headliner-range, and then the 3 main headliner slots would continue to skew younger and more current. Would be a great mix of 5 headliner slots and throw a bone to the older Coachella-goers with 2 slots devoted to them.

As mentioned on previous pages, nobody attends these legacy acts outside of the people on this board and the Reddit. They get severely out pulled by djs and don’t move tickets. I think they have an important part at Coachella to keep it close to roots, but saying Radiohead will never except a sub headliner” just means they will never be back. They need to move tickets

I don’t think GV cares. It’s part of the brand, it keeps a portion of attendees coming back, it attracts attendees who might not otherwise go. Big crowds happen regardless; part of the equation is selling tickets to people who need to be persuaded to come, and niche-r acts do that. Headliners being beat out by lower listed acts in crowd size has been the case for a decade.
If crowd size equaled ticket sales Kaskade would’ve headlined five years ago.

Just do dual headliners at that point
Intent would be to create something unique to Coachella and its history, rather than being Lolla.

Fair, but Coachella’s already done dual headliners twice. They do it as legit dual headliners, not two headliners playing opposite each other like Lolla.

I think there’s a reason why EDC and similar festivals don’t pull the same type of mainstream media attention the same way Coachella does. By this argument, EDC should be the flagship festival — with heavy sponsorship from A+ sponsors, live streaming rights with the premier streaming platform worth multiple millions in value, etc.
The brand marketing relies heavily on the “magic” of the desert, and GV has still (to their credit) focus on booking a lineup that is worthy of that sense of discovery. In the most recent YouTube sponsored documentary, there was so many talking heads chatting about how they love that they can stumble upon new or legacy acts they’ve never heard of. I’m not in Paul’s head, but I would guess that this is still important to them when considering their branding.
