My hot take is that Sonora and Yuma add an element that other festivals don't have.
As a midwesterner one of the reasons I can justify the ticket is I'm able to knock out a bunch of artists that never come to my area, and those stages often have shows that check those boxes. It's also great for those smaller known artists because the atmosphere makes it more like a club show, and less like an early day set filled with people that aren't super enthusiastic.
Plus I'll always love going from a show like Code Orange or Knocked Loose, to a show like Fisher and Chris Lake. It gives an opportunity for a genre whiplash that you can't get at the LN festivals
To be clear I wasn't referring to the curation of those stages. I love what they bring to the festival, musically. I just hate the way they completely take you out of the festival environment. I get what they're going for with Yuma, but aside from the lovely AC the Sonora structure is just so dumb.
The W1 vs W2 debate feels more like a personality quiz than anything.
People who think W1 is better are people who have urgency-based FOMO. They thrive off of the feeling that they were there when it mattered most. If they’re not the first ones to experience Coachella, then why bother?
People who think W2 is better are people who have perfectionist-based FOMO. They thrive off of the feeling that they’re able to curate the perfect day, based on tips from W1. If they can’t plan out the most ideal Coachella for their tastes, then why bother?
Can someone ask the old lady from Egypt what she thinks of Lana Del Rey headlining Coachella so we can know whether the festival has redeemed its reputation as a laughingstock worldwide
seriously considering going W2 for the first time this year because the past 2 W1’s have had a lot of delays / tech issues during sets I like. just mostly worried about the dust / no grass. is W2 worth?

W2 hasn't been getting those late adds lately. I'm still salty about Arcade Fire and the only reason we got Blink was because of frank. that could be different this year and maybe it's weekend 2 that gets the late add, so it's hard to say it's a trend yet.
I like to watch Couchella during weekend 1 and finalize my plans based on thoes webcast performances, so I lean towards weekend 2. weekend 1 is fine, but I get terrible FOMO when i'm not there for weekend 2. it's different after last year since now both weekends are streamed but I think the only times I will go weekend 1 is if I ever go back to going both weekends again.
plus, it's just way easier to get passes for weekend 2.
I went weekend 2 in 2019 and weekend 1 for 2022. Personally had a blast both weekends and could not care less about which weekend I go as long as I’m there if the lineup is my taste.

I like it because most times the music lends itself more to a club atmosphere than the tent/open air stages. To keep the examples consistent Knocked Loose was perfect to be inside a dark and intimate area as opposed to the tents where the energy can get lost, especially depending on the set times. Plus the bar and couches are great for being in a group because those that aren't as enthusiastic can hangout in comfort while those in the group that are big fans can get nice and close. I think making it an open air stage like the BMI stages at Lolla/ACL would be such a big downgrade

I have a slight preference for weekend 2 because lodging and tickets are cheaper and easier. I also think the guests are better but that’s just perception. But anyone arguing the vibes are better or whatever is a dummy
i like w1 for the surprise aspect, fresh grass, lack of dust. as mentioned above, i also have pretty bad allergies so thats a major benefit for me. if i could afford it/had the pto i would do both weekends but imo w2 just aint worth the risk of being miserable from the dust

I am a Weekend 1 purist. It just feels more hype to me. And I love watching the Weekend 2 stream to relive the magic.
It’s not perfect. You will experience sound issues at some sets. You’ll miss an epic set that was highly regarded from Weekend 1 (Labrinth) just because you didn’t know better.
I still take Weekend 1 every time. Will be my fourth year in a row.
Do we feel W1 gets more prominent special guests compared to W2 anymore? In the past I think that was true but these days with the expectation of big name guests at sets like Metro Boomin I don’t think that’s the case anymore.
weekend 2 used to get the better guests for a while. Kanye came out like 3 or 4 years in a row pre psychosis. DMX, Jhene Aiko at gallant, gallant at sufijan, Usher at Jack U.
Sia/Ziegler/Zendaya at Labrinth (v Billie w1)
Zendaya is an insane get from a rarity perspective.

Damn no way. Have they not played Coachella before?
They have not. Thinking the 2 dates at SoFi might make them out though ?
I’d usually agree and Maybe I’m delusional but the delay and a rumor that they were in the talks back in December, plus it’s The Rolling Stones. I think anything is possible
My group went weekend 1 last year after doing weekend 2 from 2016-2022.
Never again, for me. We ran into tech issues and late start times all weekend, and I would say the crowd was objectively worse. I could not believe how unresponsive people were when, for example, Nile Rodgers was brought out by Blondie, or when Gorillaz brought out De La Soul. It is still basically the same thing and still loads of fun, but Damon called it like it is - weekend 2 is just better. And the grass didn't make a big difference.
Edit: and it is way more fun to do Couchella weekend 1 looking forward to what you will see, rather than watching the next week and feeling like you are missing out on something (still salty about OMG TBA).
Counterpoint: most of the real heads were at different sets/stages (source: me)
Fair point on the delays/tech issues though, it’s the biggest benefit of W2
Real heads should have been at blondie, you fucked up!
