Does everyone here prefer weekend 1 or weekend 2? and why?o
My group went weekend 1 last year after doing weekend 2 from 2016-2022.
Never again, for me. We ran into tech issues and late start times all weekend, and I would say the crowd was objectively worse. I could not believe how unresponsive people were when, for example, Nile Rodgers was brought out by Blondie, or when Gorillaz brought out De La Soul. It is still basically the same thing and still loads of fun, but Damon called it like it is - weekend 2 is just better. And the grass didn't make a big difference.
Edit: and it is way more fun to do Couchella weekend 1 looking forward to what you will see, rather than watching the next week and feeling like you are missing out on something (still salty about OMG TBA).

Counterpoint: most of the real heads were at different sets/stages (source: me)
Fair point on the delays/tech issues though, it’s the biggest benefit of W2
The whole grass thing is mostly going to make a difference if you have allergies or asthma. If not, then sure it may not make a difference. Unless it's windy, you will absolutely feel the difference of dust flying in your face all weekend lol
What is everyone's controversial opinion on Coachella?
Sonora and Yuma are kind of terrible. I go to festivals to feel like I'm at a festival, not an enclosed venue or nightclub.
Counterpoint, Despacio is one of the best additions to any festival in decades.
I personally don't have an issue with indoor venues at fests, but I wouldn't camp out there because I agree the main purpose is being on drugs outside.
Yeah, Weekend 1, everything is fresh, for better or worse.
The big advantage now that they have streams is you can preview the stuff you might be interested in. Depending on your personality, that could either ruin the novelty or give you valuable information on where to divide your time.
Only went last year and did weekend 2, really chill but extremely hot, doing wk 1 this year, does anyone have experience with heat wk1 vs wk2? I'd assume weekend 2 is usually hotter

Despacio is definitely its own thing though. I personally found it to be a bit whelming, but I enjoyed popping in there far more than Sonora and Yuma.
Do we feel W1 gets more prominent special guests compared to W2 anymore? In the past I think that was true but these days with the expectation of big name guests at sets like Metro Boomin I don’t think that’s the case anymore.

yeah 90% of the time weekend 1 has the premium weather... Every time I've gone week two it was sand storms and 114 degree heat lol... Except 2019 was actually pretty nice week 2

I prefer W2 mostly because of the smoother logistics/fewer tech issues and delayed starts. Otherwise I don’t think it’s meaningfully different.
Weather wise W2 it’s largely a wash, though I do believe W2 has been hotter slightly more frequently. It can really go either way though. (At some point I pulled historical temperatures - would be nice to add that to the data spreadsheet!)

Apparently Interpol posted the unredacted Kilby Block Pary lineup, which still isn't on the Kilby webaite or socials. It now lists Kevin Kaarl and Late Night Drive Home, so they'll probably be on the Coachella poster.

weekend 2 used to get the better guests for a while. Kanye came out like 3 or 4 years in a row pre psychosis. DMX, Jhene Aiko at gallant, gallant at sufijan, Usher at Jack U.

Weekend 1. There are no surprises for W2. So the real question is "do you prefer premieres or reruns?"
I know it's in vogue for all of the miserable revisionists to act like the OMG TBA set was somehow anything other than the biggest party to ever happen at Coachella, but that was a pretty fucking great surprise.
Yes, I know we all essentially knew it was happening before it happened. It was still a "surprise" that wasn't on the lineup.
W2 2016 had better guests for sure But after that, I don't recall a year where W2 had more
I think weekend 2 has had a lot since. Kanye came out and did Kids See Ghosts (plus Sunday Service), Anderson Paak came out with Cordae to do RNP. YMMV on which weekend has the “better” guests, but it definitely feels like they makes a conscious effort to have good stuff weekend 2.

My hot take is that Sonora and Yuma add an element that other festivals don't have.
As a midwesterner one of the reasons I can justify the ticket is I'm able to knock out a bunch of artists that never come to my area, and those stages often have shows that check those boxes. It's also great for those smaller known artists because the atmosphere makes it more like a club show, and less like an early day set filled with people that aren't super enthusiastic.
Plus I'll always love going from a show like Code Orange or Knocked Loose, to a show like Fisher and Chris Lake. It gives an opportunity for a genre whiplash that you can't get at the LN festivals
