at the very least, my show (same venue that phoebe played on the punisher tour) was completely sold out and ticket resale prices went from 150 to 400 CAD
and after seeing TME's I started getting sick of looking at mine so here it is. a decent amount of overlap but a few key differences, some for fun, some more serious.

Some crazy billings but I'd like this
I learned an important lesson from 2022: no billing is too crazy. I also learned an important lesson from 2023: I'm going to defend all of my crazy ass billings because you know what Björk at 4 was very wrong but still close!

Ah, I wish I could've caught Katranada this year but I think I was splitting sets between Burna Boy and Blondie at the time (since I saw Kaytanada in 2017)
both Arctic Monkey and LDR will not accept anything below headliner status next year.
Don’t think anything indicates LDR would make the jump to headliner after she was already booked to sub in 2020. The AMs shows in LA sold a lot better than I had thought they did so my counterargument is mostly if we’re having former headliners sub now anyway why don’t we have a little fun with who we pick for those #2 slots?

Understand the point, but just dont think AM want to sub now.
As for LDR, think her sales in the past 2-3 months took everyone by surprise. She destroyed Europe recently, and now sold that Arkansas amphitheater (9,500 cap) in under 2 minutes. Her set at Lolla tonight will be super packed.
I believe GV is holding her as a back up headliner plan for someone. She skipped CA completely apart from Outside lands slot now. If she doesnt end up at Coachella, she can easily do 3-4 nights on her own at Hollywood Bowl next spring.
I don't necessarily think selling out 9.5k seats is solidifying headliner material lol
It really depends on each artist/band's egos but Bjork and Gorillaz accepting sub slots may set a standard but we won't know for sure until line up drop. But it's hard to argue that AM deserves higher billing than Gorillaz.
There's 3 things that are TBD as far as expectations going forward: - RTTD slot being permanent or not and how flexible will they make this slot if it is permanent? - Are "Bolded subs" a permanent thing and are they going to specifically target acts that are arguably headline caliber to accept these slots? - Should we always expect late announcement acts like Arcade Fire and blink-182 now? And if so, what caliber acts are they going to target?
Hypothetically speaking, with RTTD and late announcement acts, you're squeezing in a 4th and 5th headliner. If 2/3 of your sub acts are arguably headliner caliber then you have a pseudo 6th and 7th headliner.
2023 we got Bad Bunny, BLACKPINK, Frank Ocean, Calvin Harris, blink-182, Gorillaz, and Bjork who could all be considered HL caliber acts.
Hypothetical 2024 could see a base 3 headliners plus a RTTD that could include anyone ranging from Rage to ODESZA to Lana to Travis or Tyler to Dre & Snoop to AM depending on how creative they want to get with it. OR an act like AM or Lana could accept bolded subs? Maybe AM accepts being added as a late announcement and they play before a headliner or close the Outdoor? Possibilities are extensive here.
Might be an unpopular opinion, but unless they get a caliber of Dre & Snoop or Rage to accept RTTD, the best option for the slot is Travis. My reasoning being that he would appear like an alternate/optional HL for people who are weary of his shows. If he's listed as one of the day's headliners, it may discourage some people from attending.
And I know, "regardless of where he is on the poster, you can just choose to not go see him if you're weary"
Most definitely, but a lot of it is optics. Some people would probably feel more comfortable seeing that the day's official headliner is someone else and they won't feel like they had to skip out on one of the official headliners of the weekend.
For example I'm sure any BP fan who skipped Calvin after still felt satisfied that they got to see their headliner. And any Calvin fans who didn't go see BP still got to see a huge artist close out the night

Agree 100% I don't feel comfortable being anywhere within 100 miles of a Travis Scott show. He is a agent of chaos, a demonic force of pure evil. His concerts are satanic rituals that lead into the gates of hell and the only way I would feel safe going to Coachella is if they book him as a RTTD with someone like Mumford and Sons headlining on his day.

This plus we’ve now had 3 years in a row of special acts billed at the bottom of the poster that none of us really anticipated happening (on top two back to back RTTDs), and those have been hugely different in terms of scope and size. I think it’s basically impossible to predict that stuff since I am not a talent booker and people are not proposing their fun little ideas to me.

Travis headlining his day would be fine but presenting him as “Returning to the Desert” feels like a bad PR move considering what all went down between Astroworld and Goldenvoice.

Yes but GV dropping Travis from Coachella after Astroworld was still very public. RTTD is presented as a celebration of someone coming back to Coachella and it’s weird to put Travis in that kind of spotlight.
Simply putting his name at the top of his day would be fine but Coachella billing him in a spot that kinda says “hey look who’s baaaack!” feels off.

If theyre going with a rapper then Cardi B would seem like a much better choice for RTTD. Hasnt toured extensively since 2019 and would have a big crowd for sure. If Travis was on the line up you just put him normally without any special designation. Theres no need for that kinda bs.
You could argue the last min adds happen just to get them around the radius clause. Blink was meant to be a one weekend thing and same goes for PHM.
