I thought Ice Spice bending over towards the crowd and rubbing her fingers up her taint would be the most sexual thing I saw on the stream, but oo boy did Coi Leray and Victoria Monet try to give her a run for her money.

It’s a bit of both. My group had four phones stolen, at least two of them felt it happen but didn’t react quickly enough. Encountered the same tactic multiple times as well (guy pretends to be drunk and leans on you, someone else snags it while you’re distracted). Picking up on that saved at least one phone. Only the second time in 19 years anyone’s had a phone stolen that I know.
Seems like a goldmine idea to design a case with a tether that attaches to your pant loop or book bag or something. Make a fave colors, BOOM millions sold. (Don’t steal this idea)
They make those. And most people use them as neckstraps. So phone thiefs will never go after those people if they see that type of thing. Just people with empty hands cause they assume the phone is in a back pocket. I more or less have my phone in hand 90% of the time if I am deep in a crowd where it would be sketchy with that type of deal. Didnt have to worry at No Doubt cause it would be impossible to steal a phone and dip within 5 seconds at the front of main stage.

Only been going since 2019 and this was first year going weekend 1, but I think this was one of my best years yet and honestly weekend 1 rocked and didn’t have any issues with the crowd and tech issues for the sets I saw seemed pretty minimal (Japanese House got it the worst). So curious what’s in store for weekend 2, because the surprises and stars really seemed to show up this weekend. Too hard to pick just five sets, but here’s a gut reaction top ten:
But also ATARASHII, Folamour, Brittany Howard, Jamie xx/Floating Points/Daphni, Young Fathers, Jockstrap, NEIL FRANCES, Orbital, NO DOUBT, and more were all genuinely just as incredible.

Oh yea for what it’s worth, had some pretty big Lana fans in my group who thought it was great. Mostly positive from all the friends I went with. I teared up a few times. The highs were high I felt from what I saw. Don’t know what everyone expected from Lana tbh, it was always going to be a pretty low energy show.
random question - but do most places take apple pay? i dont really want to bring my wallet if i dont have to. i normally just keep my id in my phone case and call it a day.

You didn’t watch Doja I take it
I actually didn’t lol. Past my Sunday night bedtime

How did you see all three of BCS, Folamour, and ATARASHII? I'm currently wrestling with that conflict right now, my original plan was to go Khruangbin->Folamour with option to audible to ATARASHII after 40 minutes or so of Folamour. But then I streamed BCS and that set was so good that I'm tempted to see that as well, but my worry is that if I stay at the Gobi until 9:10 then there won't be enough time to really see much of Folamour before bouncing back out to see ATARASHII, so feels like I have to make some tough decisions between the three artists. In a vacuum I don't think I'd mind missing Folamour but it's making me sad in this particular instance because I love the Yuma and that was gonna be my last main Yuma set in a weekend schedule with just a little too little of the tent.
would love to hear what you did and if you have any suggestions or thoughts on what to do here

I can't believe the Blur thing is actually generating news articles. THIS JUST IN: AMERICA DGAF ABOUT BRITPOP. As if they cared the last 25 years either.
Besides, I seem to remember Damon chastising the crowd on the Gorillaz stream last year too?

To be fair I split Folamour and ATARASHII and didn’t see their full sets. Pretty much went straight to the Yuma right after Barry. Was able to walk right in, danced until 10 and then ran back over to the Gobi to catch the end of ATARASHII.

yah, I guess I may wind up playing it by ear to decide when to leave Folamour and not necessarily commit to seeing the entirety of ATARASHII. glad to hear that you enjoyed all three, it's ultimately a good problem to have
I just wanna know what mayboredom thought of that lana set.
I’ve been summoned.
I thought it wasn’t her best for sure. She seemed very nervous to the point where she didn’t even attempt some of the more challenging parts of her songs. The opening was cool, very Lana to open her set with someone else’s song.
However, the duet(s) with Billie were great, and I think it’s cool that she didn’t adapt her setlist to appease people that are only familiar with her “hits.” The hologram for Hope was a highlight too.
I will say, there’s a stark contrast between the reception here and the subreddit and social media. People seem to have loved her set, I think it’s had the most social media traction out of all headliners. So the comments that GV messed up or whatever are dramatic.
I will also say that she had the biggest crowd second to No Doubt in my opinion, although her crowd started to disperse towards the end of her set.
Tyler’s set was excellent, but arguably the smallest crowd for a headliner in, like, a decade. And Doja is what I expected, a great performer but still not a headliner.
Lana is a talented *songwriter, not performer. I still think she deserved the headliner slot, and I think it should continue to be given to artists that aren’t necessarily performers because at the end of the day it’s a festival to highlight music imo.
Sources inform me that there are approximately 50k tickets left for Weekend 2.
Just out of curiosity, out of how many? The full 125K, in which case its around 75K sold which matches Beyonce year (Beyonce was 80K W2, from what I was told, vs a full sellout of W1 that year)? Or a smaller allotment, say 50K left out of 90K, which would mean 40K sold which will be absolutely batshit insanely empty.
i would like to apologize to Ice Spice tho. thought her performance was pretty good
I have to say that honestly, the Gen Z or younger Millennial "poppy" acts that usually I am annoyed are on the lineup have really been bringing it production wise. Sabrina Carpenter and Ice Spice and the K-Pop groups clearly spent a ton of time rehearsing with the goal of bringing some special to the desert. Not to mention Tyler and Doja, obviously. This generation seems to treat it like the Grammy's or the Super Bowl - bringing a special, one-time show. Even John Summit clearly took a ton of time with his production this year. I don't really remember many acts outside of headliners approaching it this way when I first started going 2011-2013. It adds just this extra element of anticipation to the festival...you may have seen the act before or you might not fuck with their music at all, but you're curious about what they are going to do at Coachella.
The elaborate sets and production rigs really impressed me. Keep it up, youngsters!
Tyler's was definitely bigger than Tame Impala and LCD's crowds. Probably similar to Blackpink's. His beginning crowd was smaller than Lana but more people stayed until the very end for his set vs hers getting thin after 30 minutes

glad you had a good time at least. Just checking in on you! On the stream it seemed like she was a little upset that Billie had all those screams. She kind of shot a little side eye at her but maybe that's just Lana.

Were you there? Because people were leaving almost immediately because of the wind, and in no way was it similar to Blackpink’s crowd.
I’d agree that LDR’s set started thinning out, but her initial crowd was massive and kind of regained during the Billie set.

Nah I can’t see her upset with Billie getting a loud cheer - she seems genuinely humble. She was shaky asf though, very very nervous so hopefully she sorts that out before next week.

Smaller than Blackpink absolutely. I was actually in the same spot for both those sets (basically right in front of the ADA) and when i turned around behind me during Tyler there was no one behind me at all
Re: headliner size, this is also the first year in awhile where there were legitimately big draws against the headliners. Summit easily looked like he had 30k-40k people at the Sahara last night, for example. Which I think is a good thing. No question this didn't sell as well but also feels like you can choose. I am easily not seeing any of the four headliners this week, which is nuts and absolutely a first for me, because there is something I'm dying to see at the same time.

I don't know how many tickets have been sold, or what the "capacity" they're working off of is. I only know that they have 50k tickets left to move.
