Does CoS still try to handjob Lollapalooza and continue to incorrectly insist that 2013 was Coachella's worst lineup? I haven't bothered reading them in years for a number of reasons.
CoS used to handjob Bonnaroo, so switching to Lolla would be a change for them. I've heard from people who know that their anti-Coachella stance came from Alex Young getting denied press access there years ago.
Yep. And then they were banned from covering the LCD reunion tour because they leaked it.

this is my fault in a roundabout way and its something im really proud of
i would like to apologize to Ice Spice tho. thought her performance was pretty good
I have to say that honestly, the Gen Z or younger Millennial "poppy" acts that usually I am annoyed are on the lineup have really been bringing it production wise. Sabrina Carpenter and Ice Spice and the K-Pop groups clearly spent a ton of time rehearsing with the goal of bringing some special to the desert. Not to mention Tyler and Doja, obviously. This generation seems to treat it like the Grammy's or the Super Bowl - bringing a special, one-time show. Even John Summit clearly took a ton of time with his production this year. I don't really remember many acts outside of headliners approaching it this way when I first started going 2011-2013. It adds just this extra element of anticipation to the festival...you may have seen the act before or you might not fuck with their music at all, but you're curious about what they are going to do at Coachella.
I’m really curious how Blur were even booked. Another ‘headliner picking the sub’ or did Paul say fuck it. Or maybe Damon has a stipulation in his contract that a form of his musical outlets must play Coachella every so many years.
There was an interview with them on KROQ and seemed like it was a last minute thing .
I'd guess booking fees for No Doubt, Doja, and Blur = Rolling Stones (and maybe someone else dropped)
Three friends of GV / PT who filled in last minute
no shot that Damon being that bitchy on stage and then says his band will “never play Coachella again” was just taking the piss.
i mean they last played Coachella 11 years ago, and they barely play shows in general and rarely outside of Europe, so saying "you'll never see us again" isn't really much of a threat considering.
i also didn't see where he said Blur will "never play Coachella again", just articles paraphrasing the stage banter
He’s always threatening to break up both of his biggest bands. Maybe one day he’ll mean it. Why would they play Coachella again?

I mean I don't think anyone expected them to play Coachella again after 2013 so you never know. Paul T seems to love all things Damon.
"Guys be careful a bunch of people had their phone stolen at DJ Snake!" no you were just on 7 drugs
It’s a bit of both. My group had four phones stolen, at least two of them felt it happen but didn’t react quickly enough. Encountered the same tactic multiple times as well (guy pretends to be drunk and leans on you, someone else snags it while you’re distracted). Picking up on that saved at least one phone. Only the second time in 19 years anyone’s had a phone stolen that I know.
Seems like a goldmine idea to design a case with a tether that attaches to your pant loop or book bag or something. Make a fave colors, BOOM millions sold. (Don’t steal this idea)

Huh didn’t get that impression from Damon at all, seemed like they were enjoying themselves and they sounded great. Damon I think was being a bit cheeky in acknowledging they aren’t really the hip band anymore. Crowd I was around all seemed like fans and were attentive. Obviously the hits got more energy, but I didn’t get the impression of it being a train wreck. I had a genuine great time (maybe I made the most of it?).
So weird because on the stream I also took it just as having a self deprecating laugh at himself, and the fans they showed were going wild...maybe at the very front and the crowd energy dropped very quickly, but it looked to me like they had a surprisingly great reception. Haha guess I was wrong
I don't even like Oasis but now I want them to play just to see the mass hysteria when one of the Gallaghers says something a little cheeky.
Mass hysteria ≠ The set was bad. Maybe you didn't watch the stream, but that was not the only "cheeky" comment he made.
I think I must have been getting food or something during the cheeky part. I only remember thinking “Girls and Boys still fucks”. Overall I thought the set was quite good and didn’t sense any overt weirdness.
Good morning. It’s Monday, April 15. I’m Vanessa Franko, assistant editor with the audience engagement team, writing to you from Coachella. Here’s what you need to know to start your day.
I weigh in on this year’s festival.
The reports of Coachella’s death have been greatly exaggerated
I spent the last three days in dust-blown Indio walking tens of thousands of steps with tens of thousands of other people at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
It marked the 25th weekend I’ve done this as a journalist. Since 2007, I’ve reported on the festival’s growth as a pop culture touchstone, the expansion to twin weekends in 2012, the epic Beyoncé set in 2018 and the return after pandemic cancellations.
But Coachella, which has served as inspiration for dozens of other events around the country, has not yet sold out for this year’s second weekend, prompting some to ask if its long run as the premier taste-making U.S. festival is over.
Coachella, like many other things that have been around for decades (the first fest was in 1999), goes through up and down cycles. But nobody could look at the packed main field during the reunion of No Doubt on Saturday night and come to the conclusion that Coachella is dead.
The No Doubt set included a guest spot by Olivia Rodrigo — a nice bridge between the legacy and the now of pop music. Then, Tyler, the Creator followed with his most ambitious performance yet at the festival, “fighting with a giant sheep puppet onstage, getting ripped across the set in a fake windstorm, and toting A-list guests for a career-spanning set that proved his singular place in L.A. music history,” my colleague August Brown wrote. Doja Cat closed the show Sunday night.
That’s not to say this is the fully packed Bey-chella of 2018. Fridays are typically light, and this year looked more sparsely populated than usual. The festival grounds at the Empire Polo Club were significantly expanded, so everything has a little more breathing room, and fans were able to walk up close to see Lana Del Rey’s headlining set Friday night without getting crushed. I also noticed, compared to years past, far fewer influencer types with lighting rigs attached to their phones for content creation.
Goldenvoice, the promoter behind Coachella, did not respond to a request for attendance numbers during the first weekend, but in previous years the event has been permitted for 125,000 people.
And those attendees are forking over hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars for their musical interlude in the desert.
Although Coachella has sold bottles of water for $2 throughout its history, that’s one of the few bargains you’ll find. A general admission pass for the second weekend runs $499 before fees, which appear to be $50. Then, you need to factor in the cost of a place to stay or camp, getting to the festival site and eating, drinking and buying souvenirs.
A group of attendees told me they paid $20 for three street-style carne asada tacos, $17 for a fresh-squeezed lemonade and $14 for a small cup of esquites. They also paid $100 for a Coachella blanket and $75 for a sweatshirt.
However, they plan to return to Coachella — which is an experience, from the fashion to the art to, of course, the music.
“A festival is going to be expensive regardless,” said Bianca Anaya, 20, a college student who traveled from Columbus, Ohio, to attend Coachella for the first time. She has traveled around the country in recent years to go to music festivals, including Bésame Mucho in Texas, Shaky Knees in Atlanta and Lollapalooza in Chicago.
Even as Coachella makes dents in bank accounts and spurs some to wonder if its pull is waning, others unearthed a bit of the old magic.
Danielle Dorsey, an assistant editor for The Times’ Food section who was part of our team at Coachella, wrote about her experience at Jon Batiste’s performance Saturday night. It “harks back to the early days of Coachella,” she said, “before any of us thought to capture the experience for the ’Gram and when it was just about letting ourselves be moved by the music.”

Do we know if any/most of the artists get production budgets written into their contracts? Grimes (albeit not the most reliable narrator) referenced one and I don't think she's hurting for money.
The cost of Coachella has basically doubled since 2011 so I'm not sure if added production isn't something that's not already priced in.

If he would have said that comment alone in a vacuum, I would probably agree. The thing is, one song after making the "never play Coachella again" comment, he continues to be weird and give an insanely half assed "thanks...." at the end of Song 2.
Listen, maybe I'm totally wrong here and he really was just being a dick because he thought it was funny. The problem is that it absolutely did not read well to (at least most of) the live audience, and I think was part of the reason they didn't garner more of a crowd as their set went on.
For what it’s worth I do think you’re wrong on this. He didn’t say “we’ll never play Coachella again,” I interpreted that more as “these are the last Blur shows anyone will see; aren’t they done again after this?
He also made a point of saying what a blast he was having with the show at the end of it. I dunno, I was pretty much at the front and it definitely seemed to me like he was having a good time. And everyone around me lost their shit at Song 2, Girls & Boys, etc. It was one of my favorite sets of the weekend despite a sub optimal set list.
Just realized that Grimes came out on a giant mechanical spider and Will Smith showed up during J Balvin. Blown opportunity for Will to see Wild Wild West on that spider.

Damon was pretty much saying "youre probably never going to see us again cause we arent gonna play shows for a long while or again". Thats literally how I took it and didnt think anything of it. Its clear as day on the livestream but is anyone putting the clip online for context? Theyre just paraphrasing and it comes off way worse even though there is straight up video to back up the words.

Stagecoach. Theyll double dip on production crossover usage.
